Root A Root Question

I just rooted my phone using this Root Any Android Device And Samsung Captivate With Super One-Click App
Is this the same as doing it with the gingerbreak? And also, after I have superuser, what can I do? How do I install a ROM and put and run it in my phone?

Facepalm... that's exactly what your not supposed to do... Looks like your going to have to reroot. Read the sticky and do it right. In the future read about root nenthods for the device you have and do not use a generic root method.

To unroot go here How to Return LG Optimus V to Stock - LG Cell Phones Blog I think there is one other method out there but I'm having a hard time remembering where it's at(I hate getting older some times) . If this doesn't work then hopefully I should have found the other method by the time you might need it. Also,You might try going back to where you got the first root instructions from first. They might have a unroot method that is better suited to the method you used to root your phone EDIT: The other can be found here http://androidforums.com/optimus-v-...-v-almost-original-condition.html#post3067525
EDIT: Before you unroot, let us know what version of SuperOneClick you used, and what steps you took. What version is your OS(2.2.1 or 2.2.2). You might just have to change some premission's,install the proper flash_image,push su and or Busybox, etc.

You may be rooted fine, here's how to find out:

1) Install Terminal Emulator from the Market

2) Open Terminal and type in su then hit return
If you see a # sign prompt, you are rooted, if it remains the $ sign prompt, you are not

3) Download ES File Explorer from the Market

4) Open ES and navigate to /system/xbin and be sure the files "su" and "busybox" are in there.

You may need a different version of busybox, but su is pretty much universal.
From there, follow the last link in my signature, Best Thread Ever! ;)

If there not in the /system/xbin look in the /system/bin
If su is in the xbin make sure the permission is set to rwxr-xr-x
If su is in the bin make sure the permission is set to rwsr-sr-x

I used SuperOneClick 2.1.1. I followed the instructions step by step on the website I provided on my first post. And I have 2.2.1. Should I still do what you want me to do?

I did 1 and 2, and I got a #. What does 3 and 4 do? I have su and busybox inside /system/xbin. What should I do now?

Cool! The jury is still out on SuperOneClick v2.1.1,but if you got everything in the right place then your good to go. SORRY for all the above stuff. We just wanted to make sure you didn't use the wrong method(the optimus v is very picky about how you root it).

Download Titanium Backup from the market and do a batch backup of all your apps.

You can now download two recovery's and a flash_image.
flash_image can be found here http://www.mediafire.com/?bx14hzq5i2pq3ps

ClockWorkMod 3.2.0.1 which is necessary to install the new IHO CM7 ROM's(Gingerbread) can be found here http://download.clockworkmod.com/recoveries/recovery-clockwork-3.2.0.1-thunderc.img or can be found in ROM Manager(just don't ever try to reboot into recovery or install a ROM)

Xionia_cwma_12518.4_virgin.img can be found here Xionia_CWMA_12518.4_VM_Recovery.zip this is good for installing the Froyo ROM's and has an option in the advanced section to get you out of a recovery loop.(I keep this on the sd card even though I'm using CWM recovery.

Hint. Rename one recovery:recovery.img and the other to vrecovery.img
This will make it easier to deal with when you install them. Make sure you type them out exactly how you renamed them when using a command prompt,or terminal emulator.

To find a ROM that's works with the "V" go herehttp://forums.androidcentral.com/optimus-v-rooting-roms-hacks/79336-reference-guide-optimus-v-modding-read-get-started.html

A good Gingerbread ROM that's not listed yet,but is getting outstanding support and only a few minor things that need getting improved, BACKside ROM which can be found here http://androidforums.com/optimus-v-...-rom-cm7-green-machine-theme.html#post2971206 This is constantly getting improved upon and any problems you might find with(shouldn't hardly be any problems left to fix)it,if you bring it up in that thread will get fixed usually in a week or less.

If you decide you want to install a gingerbread ROM,make sure you get the gapps that go with them .

Recovery's and the flash_image need to be unzipped and then placed on the root of the sd card(This means just somewhere near the bottom of the list of file folders on the sd card)

ROM's,gapp's,kernels, theme's,boot animations, patches need to stay zipped when you put them on the root of the sd card.

To install the flash_image and recovery you need to download a terminal emulator or use a command prompt on PC.
From terminal emulator:
su(return)
mount_-o_remount,rw_-t_yaffs2_/system_/system(return)
cat_/sdcard/flash_image_>_/system/bin/flash_image(return)
chmod_755_/system/bin/flash_image(return)
flash_image_recovery_/sdcard/vrecovery.img(return)
reboot_recovery(return)

Red under scores=spaces, don't actually type this in
(return)=hit enter key, don't actually type this in

On PC(if you already have ADB established in you system path)type in:
cd C:SDK/platform-tools(or where ever adb.exe is located)(hit enter Key)
then type in: adb shell(hit enter key) Let it do it's thing, when its done you will see a #
Then type in the same commands as described for the terminal emulator.

In recovery you need to go to backup and restore and select backup(this will make a backup of you system in case you mess up somewhere along the line). Once that's done you need to wipe and format.

When in your recovery, just before install of ROM(and gapps if needed),you need to wipe and format all these things:
1. Wipe cache partition
2. Go to advanced/wipe dalvik cache
3. Wipe data/factory reset (now that you are rooted YOU MUST NEVER USE THE FACTORY RESET IN THE PRIVACY SECTION ON THE PHONE)
4. Go to mounts and storage/format boot, system, data, and cache(do not format sd card or you will loose all data on card).

Then go to install zip from sd card/select zip from sd card. Select the ROM zip that you chose. After it installs if the ROM needs the gapps, then go back to select zip from sd card. Select the gapp zip. after it installs select reboot system now.

It will take a considerable amount of time to do the initial boot UP.
Once on the home screen,If you have WiFi set it up now.
GO to the market app and click on it. Google will ask you to sign in to you account. Proceed with instructions. After you have account set up go to market and download titanium backup. Restore your Apps(you can restore the data on the ones you want. NEVER RESTORE A SYSTEM APP
