Root A Small But useful tutorial for installing AOSP.

The TechnoFrog
I have been hanging around the forums since I got my first android phone. (July of this year) Before then I had a crackberry. When I decided to root my phone I originally just stuck with the stock rom. I had grown somewhat accustomed to it and it was fairly simple for me to navigate. Then I made the decision to install a custom ROM. Of course at first I stuck with what I knew no need to go to drastic. I tried MikG / Virus / Synergy / and then I got really bold. I decided to try CM7. I read a little bit on it and knew that it was going to be different I just didn't realize how different. CM7 had no market app I had issues getting some of my programs to work correctly. I could not sync with Google at all the only thing it would allow me to sync was Exchange (Which I do not have) I was very discouraged. I liked the feel and looks of this ROM but It was not very usable. I came in here asked a few questions and started getting things together. First and foremost I found that I needed "GAPPS" I was not aware that such a monster existed before. So Hopefully these few steps will help you have a much better experience than I did.

Please read about the rom you wish to install before flashing. Doing so can tell you things like what you will need to do after you flash and what is working and what is not working. If something is not working and it has a fix they will tell you to apply the fix. These are some but not all the things the developers will tell you about their ROM.

Before you move a thumb muscle to flash make sure you run Titanium Backup from inside the current ROM, Do NOT SAVE SYSTEM DATA. Then do a nandroid backup of your current ROM. Wipe the Cache, Dalvic Cache, and Data. I prefer Twice each then run Superwipe from the Roms and kernel page.

1. Flash the ROM (CM7, MIUI, Evervolv, Xplod or any other AOSP)
2. Flash Gapps. (this is with the voicemail app from the ROM and Kernel Page)
3. Restart and When prompted enter all your information. Sync Google / Facebook.
4. After you have everything working and looking the way you want. Now do a nandroid backup and rename the nandroid to something useful like Mycm7setup. This way you can just go back to this if you decide to try something else out and you wish to return.

Aosp roms are not so different from Since Roms but they come with a lot less weight and some apps may not run on them. (I only had this happen with the Sprint Football app - Only sprint app i liked) Like I said Short and simple.

After you have done everything and have a happy phone life please share the love and HELP SOMEONE WHO NEEDS IT. :D

yeah you may also want to contribute to the dev's so they can continue to make awesome roms.

I always did the MLS# and #GPSCLRX# deal to fix mine when using AOSP. Does the Qualcomm method eliminate taking those steps? They were always such a pain to do...
