Help Accidental Speaker / Mute press while on call

I don't know how many others are having this problem, but I hit the mute and/or speaker button frequently while on a call.

Is there any way to remove these buttons from the dial screen?

The proximity sensor "works" but not in the sense that it works on the iphone. The screen takes several seconds to dim and then can pop on at any time during the call allowing these buttons to pressed with my cheek.

Many many times, the speaker has been activated in an environment where it should not be.

Are there any apps to prevent this, or do I have a bad proximity sensor?

Does the fact that I hold the phone on the left side of my face effect this at all? (most people hold on the right)

The last time I tried other advice of pressing home button, the phone has opened a self service apps and was about to start programming itself by the time I got off the phone.

Anyone have any ideas?
 
Buddy my wife does this constantly. It is her biggest issue with this phone. It happens to her whether she is using my moment or hers, so unfortunately I think is all in how you hold the phone. I do not have an issue with it at all.
 
I don't know how close press the phone to your face, but when I'm using the phone, I hold the top to my ear, and the rest of the body away from the face. I don't want to get face oil onto the screen, and am conscious about making sure that it's not close to my face. People can hear me fine, and I have no problems with accidentally pressing the speaker / mute buttons while on a call.
 
I duno why some have this issue and others dont.
Like i said, Mine turns off before its even close to my face.

I think what people are doing is hitting call and putting the phone to their face before it is connected and calling, thus the screen is not turning off right away till it figures out what is going on.
I wait till its showing the timer on the phone.
Or I do what the other suggested. try not to glue it to my face, cause I too hate oil all over my phone, and glass loves oil.
 
I have only had this happen once, last night. I think its an issue with the proximity sensor not registering that your ear is against the phone.

I too, have this issue, and I too use my left ear over my right. The placement of the proximity sensor has a lot to do with it. The sensor is to the right of the ear piece, and is probably not being activated by the location when you press it close to your left ear. The best advice I can give is to place it further back than what you are currently. This will place the sensor closer to your face, thus not allowing the screen to be pressed.

It is rather aggravating as it happens to me fairly often. It's hard to change a habit (such as placing the phone against your face) in order to stop this from happening...
 
I just accidently created a huge text message with my face while talking with my sister. I just cancelled the message so it wasn't a big deal, but I bet it is just a matter of time before I start having the speakerphone issue also. I thought I had the phone away from my face, but the 1/4" thick cake of oil on the screen begs to differ :p.
 
I mute a lot of calls. What a Pain! What I have been doing is opening the keypad after I say connect. No probs anymore!

Have you checked for light coming out of your ear?

Seriously though I have seen a few cases where the light sensor does not work and/or the phone lags to turn off the screen. See how fast it happens after a soft-reset. Perhaps some other program is interferring or slowing down the light sensor drivers.
 
I assumed the light sensor was to the right of the ear piece and therefore designed to be held on the right side. Unfortunately, I can only hear well out of my left ear, so holding to the right is not an option.

To be sure, the happens even when I carefully place the phone so that the sensors register BEFORE I put the phone close to my face. Even though the screen is initially off at the beginning of the call, it turns on all the time during calls and the mute or speaker is accidentally pressed.

I would say I have this issue with about 1/3 of my calls and is a major issue.

Any advice for a software based fix? All I would need is an app requiring phone to be 'unlocked' before keypresses are registered while in a call. Has anyone found something like this
 
The phone I had before this had a setting where you could tell it to basically disable the touch screen while on a call. Does the moment not have this setting?

I am constantly either muting my calls or rearranging my apps while on the phone.
 
Its not about waiting for anything. Sometimes it happens 5 minutes into a call. I too am a left ear user. My workaround...use a bluetooth.
 
I am so frustrated with this happening to me. I am a right ear user though and mute every single call I am on. The worst part is when I know it is happening, trying to get back to the screen to unmute is nearly impossible before the other party on the line gets frustrated and hangs up. I can see the screen coming on and off while on a call out of my peripheral view so I know it's because my cheek is hitting that mute button when the screen comes on. We shouldn't have to be forced to use a bluetooth headset because of a phone malfunction. There has to be a way for a software workaround for this. Motorola, are you out there listening? Let's see a lock screen feature while on a call or something. Ugh!! I'm about to return this phone because of this very issue which stinks because the device is awesome otherwise...
 
I really think that the proximity sensors must be of differing qualities... both me and my BF have moments and neither of us has any sort of problem. In fact when he's on the phone with someone sometimes I watch him to see if I can see his screen turning on at any point during his call, and I try to do the same when I'm on a call... left ear, right ear, middle ear... doesn't seem to matter.
 
I only have this happen after a text comes in now because of SMS popup. Once I got rid of the crap screen protectors it hasn't turned on randomly during a call at all. Honestly, I don't talk on the phone much at all without using my bluetooth, especially driving or at home but when I am talking on it the proximity sensor works great until a text comes in.
 
I thought I was the only one. It seems this happens to me about half the time. I will be talking to someone and I will hear them ask if I am still there, or the speaker will turn on. I too am a mostly left ear talker...hmmmmm. It can happen at any time during a call. If I am able to concentrate on holding it a little bit angled away at the bottom it seems ok but I usually get so into my convo that I forget and it happens.
 
I thought it was just me, happens to me like every other call with the mute button, I will be talking then I hear "hello, hello, are you there" then I realize I just hit the mute button.
 
Happens to me too! It's usually the speaker that suddenly starts blaring at an inappropriate time but the mute button is also occasionaly pressed. I also use my left ear.
 
This happened all the time with my wife's Moment. Found a easy fix.

After answering the call, press the back button. This should lock the screen during the phone call.
