Root Ad free

Hey all. Can anyone give me a hand with the latest ad free apk? Did a fresh install of wild for the night and totally forgot about the whole google play ad blocker debacle. I'm sure I saw someone ask about this before, but I can't find that thread to save my life as I'm out and about.

I'll just rip the apk out of a backup if I have to once I get home. Thanks.

Just back it up using titanium when you get it. Wont have to worry about downloading it from random app markets after that

Google is the biggest advertising company in the world... What were you expecting?

True.. True..

Still annoying. The problem is that some people haven't even tried using a 3rd party android market. Or even searching it up.

That tip should help people. I just use mybackup root. :D

The only problem with not updating the app may be with changes to the host file sources. Adaway has a list of source URL's for it's host files in the settings but I'm not sure if those are part of the app or downloaded like the files themselves. And if they are downloaded the initial server adaway contacts may change over time. Just something to consider if it stops working at some point.

The directory location and format of the hosts file android uses is not likely to change.

I have a local .apk of 2.3 from F-droid, and from my backup. I always just restore APP only/install APK then download hosts once a week or so. Easy peasy

Right after they yanked it, I extracted the .apk from my device and uploaded it to Google drive so that I always have a copy.

Just found out that I can use the hosts file ad free android creates on Android in Windows 7 as well so I get system level adblocking on my PC too :D
Post a tutorial :p
Here's a good overview of using the hosts file on Windows to block ads including information on how to make sure Windows Defender doesn't undo it. ;) The Hosts Man utility that is referenced is one of many free hosts file managers available for Windows so you really don't have to use the one from your phone unless you have a specific reason for doing that.

If you still want to update your hosts file(s) manually there is a post here that has a zip with a hosts file that is updated regularly so you don't have to extract it from the phone.

to add to this you can find the Windows Host file in "c:\windows\system32\drivers\etc" i renamed the old one to hosts.bak and added the new one :)

Arent there programs that already do that on widows?

Yes like ad block for chrome but the advantage is that some website detect ad blockers and won't let you access their website unless you turn off your ad block making you see their ads...... But with a decent Host File you get the same ad blocking if not better and those websites don't bug you :D

The problem with blocking at the host level is the occasion when something is blocked, and you need to access it.

This is where programs like peerguardian excel because it is easy to add to the whitelist.

Peerguardian and the bluetack level 1 filter will block almost all ads, and keep bad ip ranges out as a bonus.

Do you have links to get these programs? Are they for Android or only Windows?
