Root adb without root?

cdtdelta

Newbie
Ok, really quick (and probably WAAAAYYYY n00bie) question....

Can you run adb if your phone is not rooted and still mount /system?

All I'm looking to do is the market fix and really don't have the need to root my phone, but all the commands I'm seeing when I search on google come up with other errors (remount failed, can't su, etc).

So I'm guessing I have to root my X in order to use adb but I just want confirmation of that.

Thanks ahead of time...

Yes... you have to be rooted... it needs superuser permission which can only be granted if you are rooted. Thats what the first command is "su" after opening a shell.

Also, why not root... you can get custom roms and themes and free wireless tethering and much more. And now its so easy with universal androot, just 1 click and your done. Even has an un-root button.

root gives you access to make the system rw, but you can use adb without it just not those commands

Well I rooted my original DROID and didn't really get that much more of a benefit (for me). The stock units do everything I need them to do. So there's really no need for me to root my phone.

And I can't use universal androot because I'm running the leaked Froyo.

Again, no big deal, I can just wait for the "official" 2.2 to come out and I'll switch over to that.

Thanks again....

I guess I am a bit confused with what you have said so far.
1. Your profile says you have a Droid but your post says you have an X. I'll assume you have an X.
2. If you are running the leaked Froyo, you were rooted to load this version of Android. Correct??
3. From all the comments that I have read, if you are running the leaked 2.2, the 'official' 2.2 will NOT automatically load (once it is released). You will have to 'flash' back to 2.1 or wait for the differences to be included in a new update.zip (manual update).

Just not sure what your concern is since you apparently were rooted before but thought you would be aware that the 'official' release of 2.2 won't load on a 'leaked' version. FYI.

1. N/A
2.no, the leak doesn't require you to be rooted, in fact you have to use the stock recovery
3 yes this is true

1. Correct I have a DROID X, just never updated the profile.

2. No I didn't have to be root in order to load the leaked Froyo.

3. I am aware of that, and my plan is once the "official" one is released I'll go back to 2.1 just to update to the official 2.2.

The only issue I was having with the leaked version was the Android market not working. Since the fix was to put in a new build.prop file, I wasn't sure if I had to be root or not in order to do that (I had seen some posts that stated you didn't require root on your phone in order to push that file).

Of course in the end I ended up rooting my phone by using the DROID 2 method just to push the file.

So the overall point was probably moot anyway, and I'll still plan on going back to 2.1 in order to update to the "official" 2.2.

Thanks.....
