I am facing the exact same problem with the auto updating issue. The only workaround I could find was installing droidwall (requires root) and block network access to the market app. So far it has not updated but only did this today...

Has anyone tried this?

I am not voiding my warranty

This phone is terrible

the phone is fabulous! best I've ever had...
if you root, then need warranty support, run the gingerbread rom update utility, available on HTCs webby.
this puts the phone back into a state where htc will honour the warranty.

From the App market > Settings you can turn off the the update Notifications nag as well. Useful but it would nice to be able to do this on an app by app basis.
