advanced task killer. WHICH ONE?

Newbie
have a new eris phone and don't have task killer on it the 2nd time around. what killer do you recommend? TIA

wonder why verizon didn't install it this time.
 
Once you know how Android manages memory, you come to the realization that a task killer is pretty much pointless. The OS is designed to use as much RAM for processes as possible, and only kill tasks when they aren't being used anymore. Plus its a Linux OS so it tends to be more efficient in managing RAM.

The only exception I can see is if you deal with a very unstable app (such as if your a developer) and the the app freezes, and you need it to force close.
 
I'd stick with Advanced Task Killer. The one from ReChild.

I do NOT have mine running all the time. I only launch it when needed. That said, with a rooted phone and a Cyanogen-based ROM, it's hardly ever necessary.
 
I don't normaly use one. I do use System Panel if I need to force close an app tho. Very rare for me to need to FC an app tho.
 
I agree with None. Android 2.1 handles it just fine, and you don't worry nearly as much :)
Task killers only bring paranoia and OCD task killing. Your phone will be okay with out one, don't worry ;)

yes, it's nice to have it installed and use it from time to time. people will argue this but there ether have 0 or a max of 2 applications on the phone and only use the phone for phone calls and texts. otherwise if you actually use the phone you can't get away with out a task killer. i've tried it for multiple weeks. it just doesn't work. it also depends on each user like i said before if you run 1-2 app's then you could be totally fine w/o it but once you download a couple and run them your ****ed if you don't have a task killer.

Run the Listen app or Meridian, while using the Internet, along with Tapatalk, Wapedia, and use GBCoid. Sometimes switching between them in rapid succession. No dialer lag, no silent call bug, never cleared the cache ever, completely stock, and the phone runs at a reasonable speed. Don't even have a task killer installed. Tried one once, just made the phone slower.

Your claims of "not being a heavy user are the reasons they don't use task killers" are very silly. Good day to you sir (or rather good morning, since it is 1 AM).
 
The Droid Eris DOES need a task killer. It's simply not powerful enough to reallocate memory the way, say, a Nexus One does. Nothing that can be helped. I'm running 2.2 on my Eris, and even though I get much better performance I still need a task killer. I don't get why so many people think no Android phone needs a task killer.

Because it IS pointless. You open about 2 apps, and because of the Eris's limited RAM, its already used up. The phone is CONSTANTLY reallocating memory, especially with the web browser, because they take up a metric ****ton of RAM on any system anyway. Opening new menu's causes it to reallocate memory. Anything you would have gained with a task killer almost becomes pointless as soon as you start actually using your phone.
 
that she doesn't. Mods really should get more involved with the GenPOP of the forums. Anyway, after many many people have done various tests it really is inconclusive if a task killer is needed. Some people use them others don't. The Eris is a phone, use it how you want to. This isn't the iphone, its fully customizable to they way you want it.
I don't use one, but that doesn't mean you shouldn't.

But yet again, I'm the sexy chick in a bathtub ;)

I got my phone a little over a week ago. It's 1.5 and I noticed right away that the battery was not lasting long at all. I took it to the place I bought it (Verizon Store)and explained what was happening. The guy put ATK on it and showed me that a ton of programs were running. I had no idea. Since then, battery life has improved significantly. How else was I to know the cause without ATK? I'd rather not have apps on my phone if I don't need them. And right now, because it's new, and I'm learning about this stuff, I prefer to keep it that way to "stay out of trouble" so to speak.
 
With 2.1 we gained a Running Services fuction on the Eris. IF you need to kill an app you can do it there without having to install a different app to do it.

To answer the OP's question though, I've read many complaints about Advanced Task Killer killing things it shouldn't, and have seen fewer of the same type of complaints about Advanced Task Manager (note 'manager' instead of 'killer'). If you feel the need to install one, I'd suggest ATM rather than ATK. Back when I had one installed it was ATM.
 
I use a task killer because the task killer built into the OS is very hard to use..

The task killer is faster then a full phone reboot..
 
The Eris needs a task killer, because as any true owner can attest to, it's slows the hell down after it gets below 30 mb of RAM! And mine doesn't have that wicked "uber allocation" that you guys seem to love. It's simply not powerful enough. Now get over it, and go download ATK(but if you don't want an advanced one get TasKiller)

OMG the Eris is Linux so it doesnt need one yada yada yada..

If that was the case, my day job would be a lot easier..

Goes under 30 MB? That seems to be the threshold on mine. It will temporarily go below that, and then close an app to go back above 30 MB again.

I did try using a Task Manager, and closed all the apps. I looked at the debugging monitor, and its reallocating memory even when there is plenty of memory. The only time it seems to stop is when the phone sleeps. Its just the way the OS runs. The phone is running slow because it has relatively weak hardware. Running a task killer just results in placebo, and OCD.
 
I haven't been running a task killer since just after the 2.1 upgrade.....my Eris runs smoother and faster without one. I was running ATK.

I am right the opposite. I used to run taskiller on my Hero, read a lot of forums on here and decided to stop using the auto kill option. My battery life has improved greatly, I very rarely kill apps and I use a lot of them on a daily basis. Ie: internet, gmail, yahoo mail, facebook, google maps, handcent, wifi, mobile network, occasionally yellow pages, and throw in a few others now and then and it still runs better than it did while running taskiller.
When you are not using an app, it is not using memory or battery, unless it is misbehaveing then you force kill that app.

Over all, this is just as much of an argument, who has more fun...blondes or red heads!!
