Help after samsung s3 update

hi, i am a pensioner so not very good with mobile phones. in the ABOUT DEVICE section, my phone used to show as samsung s3. i had a recent update, my phone is now showing as SGH-1747M in the ABOUT DEVICE section running on firmware 4.4.2 if this helps.
i use yahoo for my general browsing through sky email. but since i had the recent update, when i reply to a seller on ebay, my message comes back to me from ebay as it is not delivered as it is NOT from a recognized website on my account. the reason is that gmail is taking over so now all my messages come through gmail. can some of you clever guy`s kindly help me out with this one please. as i would like to use the sky service what i pay for.

thank you, john.

SGH-1747M is just the model number for a particular version of the S3 (there are always many, many versions of each Galaxy S model). So you shouldn't worry about that.

The GMail app can only handle GMail, so I'm guessing that the problem is that when you click a link to send an email it's defaulting to using the GMail app. Have you tried going to Settings > Applications > All, find the Gmail app, then "clear defaults" on that app's page. That should mean that next time you click on the reply link it asks you which app you wish to use.

(I've never used either Yahoo or Sky, so can't advise if there's a specific problem with them, but that's my best guess).

hi hadron. thank you for your reply. i went into setings-applications manager- the options in the gmail app were, force stop, uninstall updates, disable, show notifications, move to sd card, clear data, clear cache. [ which i did while i was there ] i was not offered your option.
thanks, john.

Did you scroll down to check it wasn't off the bottom of the screen? It's a standard Android feature, so unless Samsung have really messed about it ought to be there.

I don't have the GMail app on my device (which is also not a Samsung), but the option is there for every app I've checked, including such Google apps as I have installed.

hi hadron. yes you were spot on its at the very bottom just off screen. it does say launch by default, but it also say`s NO DEFAULTS SET.
thank`s again, john.

Hmm, odd. Because it sounds like some other app (your browser or an eBay app) is using it as your default email app.

Do you use GMail at all? If not you could try disabling it, then see what happens.

The SGH-i747M was an LTE-capable variant manufactured for several Canadian carriers (Bell, Rodgers and Telus, amongst others) which utilised the dual-core Qualcomm Snapdragon S4 SOC instead of the quad-core Exynos part found in the "International" variant.

@bungalow111 Iirc you're in the UK and bought this as a refurb? Where did you get it from, and can you check the label under the battery and confirm the model number?

hi slug, yes that`s correct i bought it as a refurbished phone from the dreaded EBAY. i have had the back off the phone and the model number is GT-I9300 . i was having problem`s with it loosing the messaging function so i took it to a local so-called repair shop. he told me that the phone had been stolen then blocked, he was very adamant that he could put it right for me for £30. i declined and opened a case with ebay, ebay asked me to go to CHECKMEND and pay for a report on the phone, which i did and everything came back FINE not stolen or blocked. all the boxes ticked. so he was just trying to con a pensioner out of his money. [ i have a name for him but it`s unprintable ] i have all the other numbers underneath the battery if you need them,
thank`s, john.

Hi John,

i have had the back off the phone and the model number is GT-I9300

So it's an international non-LTE S3 that's somehow been updated with a firmware for the Canadian LTE-enabled variant... oops.

I think the first priority is to get the correct firmware back on to it; this is relatively straightforward if you have a PC as there's a software tool called Odin which lets you do it.

I'm moving this thread to the Galaxy S3 sub-forum so that other users of the device can chip in with advice.

Just wanted to let you know, the gmail app can do all email accounts now. So saying gmail app can only handle gmail is no longer true. Google has made many updates to gmail and google now to integrate them better than ever.

hi slug. can i tell you the story about the update, i was having trouble with the messaging on this phone. it continually kept on loosing the messaging function, i tried taking the battery and sim card out but the only way i could get it to operate was to wipe it back to factory settings then start over again as a new phone setup. so i decided to try an update, but when i tried to do the update the screen kept on showing me that it could not do it because the phone had been modified. i then took it to a phone shop who put the current update on it firmware 4.2.2 which the phone is using now. at least i can use it for messaging now but it keeps on loosing the connection to my provider 02 . about this software tool ODIN , i am not very good with these matters but if someone could talk me through the installation of it i would give it a go. cos i am just about ready to sling this phone and go back to my iphone 5 .
thanks for trying to help me, john.
ps. if anyone can help please do so

Was the guy behind the counter wearing a stetson and spurs? ;)

it keeps on loosing the connection to my provider 02

Not surprising if it's got the wrong firmware. It's easily fixable though.

I'm heading to bed right now, but if nobody else has chimed in by the time I resurface I'll dig something out for you. It's pretty straightforward.

@bungalow111 ,
In your OP you state you are on 4.4.2, in post 11 you state you are on 4.2.2. (typo perhaps? version numbers can be a little confusing lol :) )

The reason I ask, and I am not sure on the International variant, is if you can revert to 4.3 (if on 4.4.2). But if you are on 4.2.2, then I believe the firmware you need from Sammobile.com is this:
http://www.sammobile.com/firmwares/download/25827/I9300XXUGNA5_I9300O2UGNA1_O2U/

You are on carrier O2 in the U.K. correct?

At that link there is a download for ODIN....Odin is just a program used on your computer to flash firmware to your device.
Be sure to save any pictures or anything else you need just in case;)
Instructions on how to flash are listed there too.

Also, if you have KIES installed, either delete it or disable it...I hear that ODIN and KIES don't play well with each other.
If you don't know what KIES is or don't remember installing it on your computer, then no need to worry about it...you don't have it;)

Another thing, if you need the drivers for your computer for the S3, I'll have to do a brief search for those. ;)
Edit: http://www.samsung.com/us/support/owners/product/SCH-I535MBBVZW
I know it says a different model, but the drivers are the same.

So, bottom line, I just want confirmation that the above link for the firmware is correct for your device....pretty sure it is, but just want verification from someone else.:)

If so, we can go from there. :)

The international never got kitkat I don't think mate :thumbsupdroid:
Plus it's best to install Kies first just to get the drivers then reboot the pc before using Odin (as you say, they don't play nicely together)

Ah, you got a point about KIES...yes it will install the drivers Cheers mate! :smackshead: :D
So 4.3 seems to be the latest for the International version?
From the Sammobile link I provided....looks to be the latest.

Yup I think so mate (but I started using custom roms on my s3 as soon as it got jellybean) :thumbsupdroid:
EDIT although that seems to be an o2 (uk carrier) version, is the OP on o2? not that it will matter too much I don't think but I'd prefer unbranded

hi everyone. i would like to thank you ALL for the help in trying to solve this problem. but it`s all a bit too deep for a 67 year old, i think that my easiest option would be for me to take it back to the shop that did the updates on it tomorrow.
but i do thank you all and i will get back on this forum after i have been back to the shop. to tell of the outcome.
thank`s again, john.

hi again folk`s, a quick update.
i had some spare time today so i went back to the shop that did the update on my phone. i showed them the forum messages on my phone, they then said that they only do uk updates on phones that are bought into the shop. i can`t argue with them because i don`t know what i am talking about. so what i have done is uninstall the gmail app and account from my phone, at least i don`t get messages coming in from all over the place.
thank you all for trying to help me with this,
john.

hi, i know but that`s what they said they had done the uk download, they said the firmware on the phone is the same as a NEW S4. i have not got enough knowledge to contradict what they say. so unless i can prove they have not done what they say they have done i am stuck. i would have a go myself if someone had the patience to talk me through it in a very easy to understand way, but i don`t even know how to download the drivers which i believe i must do. if i mess up the phone goes in the trash.

thanks, john.
