Root After system update, I'm caught between root and unroot (z4root):

After I installed a system update, z4root says I'm rooted (gives me unroot option), but when I try to unroot, it gets to the "acquiring" part and then the z4root screen goes away, back to the previous menu.

I reboot and nothing's changed.

I try to root and same thing.

It seems to say I'm rooted, but won't let me have root access. It won't let me unroot.

I've pulled the battery, rebooted, etc, and same thing.

I uninstalled and reinstalled z4root (1.3.0)

I was also having an issue with the phone hanging up, unless I pulled the SD card. Did an SD card format, which seemed to clear the problem until it tried to recache my photos/music, etc.

I'm not sure where the source of this problem is, but any help would be appreciated.

If you are trying to use Z4root on Gingerbread for the Droid X...well, it just won't work (neither will Gingerbreak for the DX).

I'm assuming that you took the recent .602 OTA update of Gingerbread for the DX (per your system update reference).

Rooting GB on the Droid X involves carrying root forward from Froyo (i.e., you have to return to Froyo, root with Z4root, install Droid2bootstrapper, run ClockworkMod recovery, flash the two-part pre-rooted .zip files that p3droid published).

Be aware that are there many threads and discussions here about rooting / upgrading to .596 that could easily be updated to include the references to the .602 release as well, since the instructions should be nearly identical except for the pre-rooted GB files that are used to flash.

I'm not the most tech saavy, though I can usually pick my way through problems...but I'm als fairly new to the Android world.

First, what is Gingerbread? Is that what I'm using now that I upgraded?

I think I had Android 2.2 before, and z4root worked just fine.

I also noticed that holding the Home button down while booting no longer brings me to that system menu. I get the little android with the exclaimation point, but it doesn't go any further.

I'm afraid if I try to flash the phone, I'm going to screw something up.

Gingerbread is the (2.3) release of Android that came after the Froyo (2.2) version.

Go in to Settings -> About phone and look at the "Android version" row...if it says 2.3.3, then you definitely are on Gingerbread and Z4root will not work for you.

Sounds like you have a little bit of reading and researching to do here in the Droid X root sub-forum .

Just read through the stickied threads up top, do some forum searches, and post some questions, etc. as you need to.

You've come here at a somewhat busy time since the ".602" version of Android (look in the same Settings -> About phone section for your "System version" information", if its 4.5.596.MB810.Verizon.en.US then you've got the OTA (over-the-air) version just prior to the most recent OTA update, the ".602" version (4.5.602.MB810...).

Either version is only rootable by the process I described earlier.

I don't want to push you in a particular direction for (re-)gaining root, because I feel that folks should make a (very) informed decision about how and if to do so.

There are also a ton of great folks on these forums that can answer your questions. Just be patient, do a little homework , and provide as much information as you can when you post.
