All Things Froyo

Yeah the offical update is not out yet, even though many are already on froyo via custom roms. I guess we are just no paitient at all.

People have been waiting 7 months for an official update that should have been available shortly after launch. That's more than 1/3 the life of this phone, if you look at the upgrade eligibility dates for most of us. It's not about patience, it's about a commitment by Samsung that convinced many of us early adopters to buy the phone, and has yet to be fulfilled.

I'm going to continue to wait it out. I just don't think I have enough skill/ knowledge to be messing around with rooting my phone. Other than upgrading, I don't know what else I would be able to do with it.

Rooting's the easy part. It's the flashing of the custom ROM that will generate some heart flutters and perspiration the first time around.

Regarding rooting, one of the main advantages is that it provides you with the ability to create a complete backup, using either Titanium or MyBackup Pro.

So how complete of a backup can I do while the phone is not rooted?

Unfortunately if you read the comments on the engadget page it's not that the link isn't working yet, it's that it's not working any more. They've apparently already pulled it for some reason.
Yeah... something should be coming soon I hope, but who knows when dealing with Samsung/AT&T. :(

Minimal. MyBackup Pro documentation reveals that you won't be able to back up third party applications data\settings, protected applications, Android Market links, and system application data, for example. Also, you won't have the ability to backup and restore applications in batch mode with a single click.

See this for additional, important information:

I think that thread titles such as this one should not be allowed until the actual update comes out!!
Sorry about that... that is what the reports were saying when I posted it, but the original Samsung link has since been taken down. :(

Maybe a Mod can edit it? (or if we are lucky it will just come true again sometime today)

Webcache link for the Samsung FAQ page that was taken down:
How Do I Update The Software On My AT&T SGH-i897 (Captivate) Phone To Android 2.2 (Froyo) Through Kies Mini For PC?

it's dated 11-02-2011 which either means we're getting the update in november this year, or more realistically, they're going with the day-month-year format which would mean the article is from feb. 2, 2011.

Looks interesting, but I don't see support for the Captivate. Do you believe that one or more of the other Samsung devices listed "cover" the Captivate's needs?

Oooh - sorry - didn't think to check that. :( Bummer if it doesn't, it's a good app.

I'll see what I can find and get back to you.

BTW - I redundantly back up my apps with Astro File Manager - that's pretty handy, rooted or not, other options or not. Just tossing that out there.
