All I can do is call them like I see them. If that make CAPS fly, so be it. I've ignored him in the past when needed, I can do it again. :)

I was getting more moving around on my location as well until I used the GPS Test procedure in the link I posted just above your last post. Give that a try (I had to do it twice), and see if if helps. The accuracy I'm seeing isn't 6 ft, but so far it's definitely good enough for driving with Google Nav, and the lock times are usable.

I couldn't follow the directions on that link. For example, when I open GPSTest, you can no longer pull down the notification bar to turn GPS back on. Also It says hit menu, then select start. That doesn't work either.

I'm doing it step by step as listed

I've never owned a smartphone so my questions may (will) sound very noobish.
I'm looking at getting the latest release of the Vibrant here in Canada which uses the Droid 2.2
One outlet selling these says I'd have to pay an additional monthly fee to use the GPS function. A US friend says he uses the Google Maps function for navigation.
Are these 2 distinct features?
The service provider for my phone will be Bell Canada (I'm bundling my home phone and internet services with my cell phone).
Can I use the Google Maps feature in Canada without having to pay an extra montly fee?
I only searched this thread a few pages back since most of the info relates to Driod 2.1

Yes, it is both free and offers turn by turn navigation.

Thanks guys. However, I made a bit of a mistake. The current Vibrant offered by The Source still uses the Droid 2.1.
Will I still have the Goggle Maps nav function or should I wait til the Vibrant comes with the Froyo 2.2 already loaded?

Yes it works with 2.1

Guys, how do you know if you have the gps fix? Firmware is 2.1 eclair update 1. Oh and how do i turn off 3g and data because i cant find the options.

The official OTA that provided the GPS "Optimization" was JI6. To check which baseband you have do the following.

settings > about phone > scroll down to baseband version: it should read T959UVJI6

To turn off 3G, which will only leave you with Edge, but data will still be on. Do the following.

settings > wireless and network > mobile network > network mode > then choose GSM only.

GSM is basically 2G, WCDMA is 3G.

To completely turn off data, but you also won't receive phone calls, you can put your phone into airplane mode. Hold down power and then choose airplane. Another option is to turn off all syncs, but you still can make calls.

umm ill be honest.. my gps is ok , not great but i dont really use it much to make it an issue anyway..

whenever i try to use it, there are times that it will lock real quick but then there are times that it will take minutes and minutes to lock, it may have something to do with data connection (fluctuating edge/3g)

then when it gets locked, the arrow sometimes jumps around like a grasshopper frolicking on grass.. LOL , but still but not overly bad though, it seems ok, it still usable i guess given you have good common sense..

something i discovered on my way home from work earlier this evening... so i was walking to my house and i was on navigation, the arrow was jumping around a little bit .. LOL.. so anyway i decided to press the menu button then press on layar, then cleared the map.. suddenly mr.arrow stayed in one place and accurately went to the right direction i was going to without jumping around in the map.. im not sure if it had something to do with 'clearing map' on layar.. or i just got lucky..

i will observe more tomorrow/later today when i go to work... i should have tried it again when i went to watch harry potter with my friends earlier some hours ago..hehe should have thought about it..

Seems it "optimizes" by wiping out any tweeks to the GPS. From the customer service page...

Installing & Using GPS Restore Application
During online surveillance, there is an abundance of GPS tweaks that impair GPS performance. Often times, no backup is performed to restore values prior to modifications. Samsung has released an application that restores GPS settings to recommended factory defaults for optimum performance.

Not picking on them but the fractured English is kind of funny, either that or the CIA really is up to more mischief than even I suspected.

This app seems to be to help out the poor TMO support folks being bombarded by GPS complaints that end up being some screwed up settings. Now at least they can say run this app and call me in the morning...

I don't know. I'm not saying anything about it yet, but I was just able to connect to 3 satellites (out of 11) while sitting here at my desk. If I moved a mm I lost them; but I did connect twice. I've never been able to hook up with any here before. Looking forward to testing it out on the way home tonight.

Today Samsung USA released an app on the Market called GPSSamsungRestore to fix GPS on the Captivate and Vibrant! Look for it as GPSrestore in the Market and tell us how it works for you!

After having to go outside for a clear view it seemed to fix my Vibrant GPS. It's now pretty much on target!

P.S. - Turn on your GPS before running the app...
