"In 2.1, my GPS sucked, even after JH7 and GPSRestore. With 2.2 + hard-reset, works real good now, does not lose lock anymore."

what is "hard-reset???

In 2.1, my GPS sucked, even after JH7 and GPSRestore. With 2.2 + hard-reset, works real good now, does not lose lock anymore.

Just wondering what you mean in that it sucked? Did it take a long time to lock or does it jump all over? I was thinking about trying the hard reset now that I'm on 2.2. Right now it just takes me forever to get a lock, but once it does, it tracks me perfectly. Did it stay on 2.2 after the hard reset? And you just mean the factory data reset correct? Thanks for the help!

"does the build code have anything to do with the GPS problems?"
According to Samsung and AT&T, there never were any problems. Or if there were, they were solved three(?) times by firmware updates.

But a logical presumption might be that Samsung is aware of an issue, and that at some point a build code will include the fix for it. Even if that build code is the "Galaxy S-II"

my build i think is the newest out right now(1012) and i have had no issue with the GPS. But with going to 2.2 Froyo the other day even i see a better results out of the gps. locking in on towers alot faster. myself with my phone have had no issues locking on to a tower.

In 2.1, my GPS took long time to lock and once locked, would lose its lock easily when driving around. With 2.2, it seems to behave as a normal GPS would.

Yes hard reset is same as factory reformat. You'll have to reinstall all your apps again but contacts, photos and other stuffs on SD card is fine.

I think "working GPS" is more-dependent on specific location than these units. The Captivate has a GPS issue... just some peoples' location/environment is ideal enough to overshadow it.

I have numerous GPS-enabled devices. The Captivate is the only one with problems.

I have a 1007 build that I got in September and I could rarely get a GPS lock even after pointing my phone at a clear blue sky for 15 minutes. I hated this phone for the fact that I couldn't use the GPS. I flashed it with a ROM called Paragon back in January and I couldn't be happier. The GPS works great and gets a lock outside within 10 seconds and tracks me perfectly. I can even get a lock inside my house in 30 seconds. The lock I get is only from the GPS satellites too because I have "Use wireless networks" turned off at all times.

Same phone, same carrier, same location, different software, and now I finally have a working GPS.

For some reason since the update, the GPS locks quicker but is less accurate. it stays locked but shows me wandering all over the neignboring roads as I drive. I used the GPS Restore App and it didn't have any impact. Mine is a very early 1007 build

Somebody at another forum announced an app he created that is on the market. He claims it will improve GPS on the Captivate-who knows...here is a copy & paste of the post:

"After struggling with GPS issues on my Galaxy S for WAY too long, I spent a lot of time investigating the issues and have just released an app on the market (called "GPS Doctor") that should fix most of the problems. The technical details on how it works are available in the app's description if anyone interested.

To get faster fixes, run the "Quick Fix" option right before going into Google Maps (or whatever apps you're using).

It's been working really well for me on my personal phone, but I know it's probably not perfect...if anyone ends up trying it out, please provide feedback! I'll be hanging around this thread for a while."

$2.99 (GPS Doctor - Android app on AppBrain)

From what I read, it still looks like a band-aid. Run this program prior to running your navigation. Hell, I do that now with GPS Test and get a quick lock. It's maintaining that lock over the course of a... course... that is the issue.

Though, I will say, my GPS works stunningly when I am out walking the dogs. But then again, I already know where I am, and where I am going (wherever the dogs want to go).

Just used mine last night. Locked on when I was outside. Drove a few miles with it in my seat, lock would break but only for a few seconds.

Nope. No one has a working GPS or is without random shutdowns.

In fact, most people can't make phone calls or access the internet.

I do. It's worked since the "fix" update. It leaves a lot to be desired, but it functions. Granted, I haven't tested it since I updated it to the official froyo, but I suspect that it is still the same.

Got a new Captivate today... and the GPS is AMAZING. I can get 5 satellites (per GPS TEst) in my house. My old ADP1 couldn't do that.

Now if I can just get the wifi set up...

With 2.1, I could usually get lock within 30 seconds outside. Occasionally I would need to power off and back on. With 2.2, I get a lock within 20 secs. However, with 2.2 if I have WiFi on I will not get a lock.

Thanks for the idea about turing off wifi. I have always had a problem getting a lock near my apartment. I would sit outside and wait forever trying to get a lock to track my runs. I just turned off wifi while inside and turned on GPS inside and got a lock within 20 seconds. HOPEFULLY that will make it a little bit more reliable near my house!

Since I upgraded stock to Froyo, I now get a GPS lock immediately in my house. It never would never get a lock inside the house before. I did notice on the one trip in my car since the upgrade that the volume on the navigation program was too low. Don't know if that was because I had volume settings messed up or if it was the program. Will have to check it again.

Shutdown problem initially.

Rooted and deleted ALL bloatware. Success, no more shutdown randomly.

Immense battery life. Haven't charged it in 2 days with constant use.

GPS didn't work for 2.1 that well, but it worked. Now, with 2.2, it's down to the foot.

My Cappy was manufactured after November 2010. My GPS has always worked, as has my WiFi, phone, and WWW access.
Since 2.2, GPS locks even when inside my house, WiFi does not "disconnect" any more, and phone & WWW are better than my BB Bold.

Stock phone started on 2.1 and updated to 2.2 via Kies mini (less than 10 min)

But - battery life is still around 15 hours. I'm going to try "bump-charging" tonight.:D

I had an original Captivate, bought in August 2010. GPS was horrible. Didn't have real shut off problems until December, then it was like 4 times a day.
I called ATT and got a refurbished, 1007 build, within 3 days.
Rooted, running Paragon RC6...no shut downs, GPS works great!

GPS works great on my unrooted, stock Captivate that I recently updated to Froyo.

Worked great before update and even better now.

Update:

Tried navigation again and this time it took 15 minutes before I locked on. It finally did so just as I was reaching my destination. Nice. So now the Captivate locks on inside my house (where it wouldn't before) but is totally intermittent on navigation (which worked pretty well before the upgrade). Definitely hit and miss and can't be counted on.
