I tried to follow the instructions to change the so-called SUPL server settings. I entered the code in the dialer and hit the "send" button. Instead of taking me to what the various articles call as "LBSTestMode", it took me to the frikking call log! I am guessing the "send" button referred to in all these articles is the green phone button on the dialer screen, right? I am frustrated. What am I doing wrong?

I don't believe anyone ever said to hit send. After you enter the last # it opens the app. Send isn't required.

I haven't been following this thread all that much because the GPS on my phone works, although it usually takes a while to get a lock if I'm not connected to wi-fi. What I'm wondering though is for all the people who have non-functioning GPS, if they call 911, is their location being sent? 95% of a carrier's phones must be E911-compliant and provide a location accurate to 300m. Since AT&T decided to go with a handset-based solution (GPS), I wonder if it's actually working. If not, this is a serious issue and some complaints to the FCC might force AT&T and Samsung to fix it. PLEASE DON'T CALL 911 TO TEST IT!

I tried that too. But after I enter the last #, the part of the screen that shows the number goes blank and the phone just stays on the dialer keyboard screen. I rebooted, powered off and on. Is it because I have the stock phone and not a rooted phone? In other words, does this thing work only with rooted phone?

I had thought of that too. Unfortunately, the requirement is currently only that they be able to identify the cell tower you're connected to. The 300m thing comes into force in 2012. From wikipedia's e911 page:

Wireless network operators must provide the latitude and longitude of callers within 300 meters, within six minutes of a request by a PSAP.[5] Accuracy rates must meet FCC standards on average within any given participating PSAP service area by September 11, 2012 (deferred from September 11, 2008).

Locking is fine with me but it is not accurate. Sometimes it would freeze on a spot or say I am on the other side of the road.

btw, I have the leaked froyo

the AT&T leak?, and you still have a GPS issue? I dont doubt it but heres something weird because for me the leak was the only rom that fixed my GPS and I mean fixed. Perfect lock 15-25 secs tracking is perfect, not even kidding. This has to be the greatest cell phone anomaly ever, in fact it is so perplexing that those idiots at samsung cant even figure it out. I have no option but to stay with the leak it has been on my phone since it dropped, i need the GPS for work, and all the little add ons after you have them seem to make the phone empty when not there. At this point I dont even care when Froyo is dropped I just fell bad for all the people that dont have it and have been waiting all this time for a real GPS fix. I would say it wont be long now but we know how that goes, but apparently the froyo leak does not actually have the fix:confused:although mine is perfect.

Hmm, well I think my state has certain requirements beyond that, but I don't know how enforceable they are. There are interim requirements before Sept 11, 2012, but I can't find exactly what they are. There is more information here and a link to file a complaint with the FCC: Wireless 911 Services

At any rate, mine mostly has the problems with tracking while in motion. It's also not wildly accurate, but I suspect it could give a location to 300m within 6 minutes most of the time. That's a pretty low bar, so I'm afraid this doesn't help much.

Been a lurker so far, but wanted to pass on that Samsung GPSRestore worked for me.

My Captivate GPS has worked very poorly ever since I bought it in August. It typically took >10 min to get a GPS fix, and sometimes would not lock at all. It easily lost the fix while driving.

When I ran the GPS Restore App, I got the "Position fix fail" message, so I figured that hadn't worked either. But then I noticed over a period of about a week that performance gradually improved. Now I am getting an initial GPS fix within 15-30 sec. For about the first minute the lock is intermittent and lags behind my actual location, but after 1-2 min I'm getting 5m accuracy and real time tracking.

Go figure.

Work2home - Google Maps

My Tracks after finally getting GPSRestore to work. Now... if it's still working in a month or so...

Ed.: Battery was pretty low... about 19% by the time I got home. Don't have a car charger because I have a USB port but I didn't bring it with me today.

Since the update went out a week or so ago, I cannot find nor have I ever seen the GPS fix from Samsung in the AT&T Market place. Anyone else have this problem?

I just did a search for it under "GpsRestore", it came right up, FWIW.

Actually, it comes up under "GPS Samsung Restore" also.

Point being....it's still on the Market.

Did it work for u. I've had no problems since apply this app

have any of you tried gps status in the market, it says it will download some data from a server and give you time to first lock in of sat's. when i allow it to get the data, it locks in in seconds, if not it may take 2 mins?

Yes, there are multiple ways to pre-fetch satellite position data via the constellation database which can help with initial lock, but most peoples' problems are not with initial lock, but instead with maintaining lock and overall GPS accuracy.
