All Things GPS

Once I get a lock, if I even get a lock, I can enter a second address and route information will appear instantly. This will only happen if I do not turn off GPS. If I turn it off then on again, I will have to wait for a lock and that can take as long as the first lock did, if it ever locks.

It seems like a cache is being cleared when GPS is turned off. Someone smarter than me would know better what's going on.

And yes, I've tried this with all combinations of Location settings. I've also tried indoors and outdoors.

I'm also on DJ05 and had the same GPS performance while running stock.

It seems to be hit or miss with GPS on these phones, but I figured I would add this here. Finally made the jump and updated to DJ05. I didn't fully test the GPS lock on like I should, but once I got a lock which took about a minute. I was inside while doing this. I then thought to go get my Incredible. I went out side with both of them locked on and running GPS Status and I was noticing for the first time ever I was actually seeing 8/8, 9/9, 10/10 for GPS locks. The most I had ever gotten was 7 before and I could never get it to lock onto all that it would see.

Has it been determined if part of the issue is hardware? It still seemed like it was finnicky like it would jump around at times, or jump around as far as seeing more or less satellites than the incredible, but the incredible did start varying in how many it saw. At times though I was seeing more satellites on the fascinate than the incredible was. Hopefully when I get to play around more this will have actually corrected my GPS or at least greatly improved it.

Update: Well so far my gps at least accorsing to gps status is working really well. Locked on quick from a cold start was grabbing 10/10 satellites, but I can't seem to use google maps navigation. I open the app, but it seems to just sit there and keep saying something like checking navigation ability. Tried deleting and reinstalling the app, but no difference. Turned gps off and them went into the app. Detected gps was off and prompted me to turn it on, but still no difference. Any one else had this issue? Any suggestions?

I believe I've had something like this problem before. IIRC, rebooting the phone solved the problem, at least temporarily.

I found the solution through a google search. All I had to do was open up google maps and then I just put in an address then hit navigation. It worked and then ever since it has had no issue. Seems like it was almost a problem with nav being glitched or something and it seemed like it was waiting for the setup screen to be gone through, but never actually appeared.

Anyway I turned my GPS off at about 6:45pm so it was completely off, and when I came out of work at 1am I was hoping that was enough time for a cold start, pulled up Navigation hit the most recent address and had a lock within about 8 seconds. I'll try again tomorrow.

I was wondering for any of you in this thread that said you tried DJ05 with no difference are you still using TouchWiz, any kind of custom roms, kernels, still have the verizon bloatware? I'm beginning to wonder if the GPS issues are partially linked to memory available or in use on the phone? I've noticed issues I've had with certain things in LauncherPro with it being slow are more problematic when there's more RAM in use, but when the RAM in use is alot lower it seems like it works flawlessly.

((Sorry if this app has been discussed already in this thread))

Recently I have been experimenting with an app called 'GPS Test' available in the market. I used to have a wait a few min to get a lock but since getting this free app my lock has always been below a min (obviously not perfect but much better) and accurate below 10 feet. This is true even from a cold GPS starts.

BTW It works much better than GPS Status, which I have tried too.

I'm not sure if this will help everyone, or anyone for that matter, but in my situation it has helped with this frustrating annoyance. Hoping after Monday we wont have to worry about the GPS problem at all... (wishful thinking)

My GPS has been 100% garbage and terrible since day 1. Would never ever get a good fix and would take minutes. The best it ever got was in the same neighborhood as mine, no closer than that.

I fixed it by:

1) Uncheck all options for GPS
2) Reboot
3) Check Standalone GPS **ONLY**
4) Start Google Maps
5) Hit Menu Button then More>Cache Settings and Uncheck Prefetch if checked, and most importantly, **HIT Clear Map Tile Cache**.
6) Then try to Get Directions to somewhere, let it take a few minutes or so to get a good first fix on you. Then after that its almost instantaneous for pinpointing your location.

There are two apps with the same name. One has a space between the two words.

One is by Chartcross Limited and the other by Lockwood (Mike or Mark) .

Which app did you use?

I've tried the steps you suggested at the beginning of the post but my GPS will still not lock on. I've waited for as long as 10 minutes and it still does not lock. I cam across another thread by accident that suggested turning on the WiFi and the GPS is suppose to lock on. Well, I turned on my WiFi and went to navigation and the GPS locked on right away. I'm not even in an area picking up WiFi at the moment.

I don't even know what's up with the GPS on this. I'm running DJ05, SuperClean 0.9 and the Imnuts 1/8 100 voodoo kernel. Last night GPS locked within 20 seconds. Today it's pretty grey, snowy, cloudy and I can't get the phone to see more than 2 satellites. Go outside with my incredible and it locks within about 5 seconds and sees about 8+ satellites. Do these things just have really weak antennas? Tried rebooting, etc. No luck. This is really my only gripe with this phone is the funky GPS.

I got the update yesterday, but my GPS still doesn't work. Is anyone else having that problem? It just won't lock on.

Also, the light for the soft buttons at the bottom turn off before the screen does. They turn off when the screen gets a little darker, but is still on. Are they supposed to stay on longer with the update?

It says I have DL09 in the "About phone" settings. I've turned the phone off and on multiple times. Any other ideas?

GPS should be fine. I have all 3 location options enabled, and if I fire up GPS Status, it locks in less than 30 seconds for my first fix.

The back lighting of the capacitive keys is working as designed. They went from only being on a few seconds to being on until the screen dims.

Why not post this in one of the many other update posts? Do we really need so many posts going over the update?

Here are my 2 Fascinates one with the update and one without. Both were powered up from a cold start at the same time. Within seconds the updated phone locked on, after 15min the non updated phone was still quite a ways off and near the 18min mark finally locked on.

After install Adrynlayne's Radio, Kernel, and JT's Super Clean ROM (DL09) I can get at least an 8/10 lock within 15 seconds as long as I am outside. The strange thing is my buddy is running the exact same setup, and he has troubles getting a lock, even though we are right next to each other.

After ver 1 upgrade whih is a partial 2.2- my GPS is superb. It locks and begins directions within 5-10 seconds. Oddly, if I go to maps, it takes longer than the navigation to locate my postition. Either way, I am thrilled that I can voice command a location and it is speaking within a quarter block.

Can anyone post pics of satellite fixes and signal strengths? Very curious to see if the update has improved GPS.

When I am outside, I can get a 9/10 satellite lock. I am inside (can't get a lock indoors) and at work now. I can post a pic when I get off
