Allow users to edit post title at any time

Would it be possible to change permissions for the forum title edit, to allow users to change the topic title anytime after it was created.

Thanks
Andy

That would undercut the purpose of premium membership. If you would like to edit your title, please join our premium community.

Ahh, I didn't know this was a premium feature.

I just thought it would be handy for updates, such as ROM updates, but nvm

IMO premium isn't worth paying for if I was just to use it for this

Click the "Premium" button up there in the menu bar and you'll see there is more to it. ;)

Oh oops, sorry. I totally misunderstood your question. I thought you meant the user title, not the thread title.

If you would like a thread title changed, click the "Report" button on the left. Mods are typically on all the time and we will get to your request ASAP. I think letting users change titles whenever they want might get hectic as a discussion could begin about ____, then all of a sudden the user changes the title to something else, and it gets really confusing. I think by having only the moderators edit titles, it makes things more orderly. But like I said, we are, for the most part, very willing to comply with title change requests, so just click the Report button.

When useful posts are made, such as this:

http://androidforums.com/desire-all-things-root/231930-desire-index-everything-desire-here.html

Where the OP would like to update the title to show new updates, it wouldn't be feasible to PM a mod / Guide to do this on a regular basis.

Is there a reason this functionality is not available to standard users? It would also help people put [Solved] in their titles if they wished. Maybe if it could be restricted to adding an extra bit before or after the exisiting title?

Apparently it's because it will cause confusion, but personally i don't think it would.

Maybe allowing it for users with a certain amount of posts (like 1000 posts) would be ideal?

Yes, perhaps it could be a priviledge of people who create helpful threads or something. That would work. I imagine there would always be scope for bad eggs to cause trouble if it was Carte Blanche though.

+1

I'm hoping the edit feature would only be available to the creator of the thread, and that it would also only be available for a set length of time, perhaps 7 days, and also, as is being said, only to members who have satisfied some membership, performance or behavior criteria in the forums.

Well even 7 days wouldn't be enough for people with ROMs and themes that are updated all the time, as they may need to edit the title many times.

Here's an idea. Only people with 1000 posts or more can edit their own forum titles whenever they want, after the forum is created. You could have a button on the original post for other member to report abuse of this privilege, and if they get so many reports, they get the privilege removed

Very true, as I think back to the nearly daily updates coming from XDA devs on the Eris root ROMs; it goes on and on. ;)

Thread title editing/updating could cut down on duplicate threads a bit, too.

True. XDA allow editing titles at any time, and i've not noticed anyone abusing it or causing any confusion, it is just used when a ROM/Theme has been updated, when someone has made a mistake in the title, or if the circumstances change

Yep. I remember looking forward to an updated time stamp on Eris ROM threads over there; it was often the OP, very first thread that was being updated on a regular basis.

Yes, that's exactly what I mean, and the main reason it would be very useful. I keep an eye on the FreeX10 2.2 thread title on XDA to see if there is any updates, it saves me from opening the thread every 2 hours lol

Yeah completely. Faqs and guides can be updated with issues and work arounds as they become relevant too

Yeah, the device guides are updated as needed, and as suggested by members from time to time by the Guide or Mod responsible for each device area.

This thread title editing idea by the OP of a thread is really beginning to seem like a great idea. Keeping it from getting out of hand/abused would be easy, and probably an honor system would work fine, I'm thinking. A post/account age threshold, so we know the member a bit, might be all that's needed.

Let's hope the admin thinks so too :)

Premium membership is worth it just to support this great forum, source of information, and help you can receive by using it. Title changes are a minor spiff ;)

As for giving the user the ability to change the thread title, I really don't see this as causing nay major problems, and would actually help, s was mentioned, any informational threads that are maintained by a user. I've seen it allowed on many forums, but these Android forums don't seem to have the ability. Makes more work for mods, from where I stand.

If it's abused, then control the abuser - I think you'll find it is pretty much a non-issue.
