Amazon App Store Thread - Daily Free Apps

Today looks like another winner: Naught 2, sequel to a popular game where you control your character by "gravity", tilting the phone to move Naught through a dark, artistically cool underground environment. Has almost no permissions. I bought the original (on my son's recommendation) and enjoyed it - except that I don't have time to play games. :( Only downside is that it's kinda big, at 45MB. We've seen worse.

It's 10pm here so I nearly missed that. Thanks! :)

After such a wonderful free game yesterday, it is a calculator today. Could be very useful to some but I have had umpteen of them

Looks like it would have a limited market, too. I looked at some of the 1 ratings and apparently you need to be connected to Amazon App Store for it to work. If you need a scientific calculator and will only use it in an area where there is Wi-Fi, this one has no permissions required.

We noticed on VC that a lot of apps don't work without Wi-Fi, but a lot of them do. Not sure if it is just the FAOTDs or if that is across the board.

Today looks like a really good one: Sonic CD, as in Sonic the Hedgehog. It's a port of a well-received classic Sonic game, and the reviews are glowing. Biggest drawback: you'll need over a quarter gigabyte (262MB) free. Wow!

Glad I have 32GB devices. I got that right away

It took 1/2 hour to download and install. Excellent graphics, though. I was hoping for a tutorial. You have to force close the app and then go back in to exit the game. Fun game. Fast moving.

Not so fun, apparently is today's app, Boxing Monkeys. It got good reviews and has no intrusive permission, but the people that gave it a 1 star rating, for the most part, said it was boring.

If you liked the 260MB eaten by the Hedgehog, you'll *really* dig the whopping 335.6MB gobbled up by the Caterpillar (I assume there's one in there somewhere) in "Alice Trapped in Wonderland", today's FAOTD. It's got a lot of five-star reviews, and apparently requests nothing of you but your time and RAM - no permissions.

Today's looks good - "Courli", a platformer featuring a bouncing tennis ball. No permissions, no in-app purchasing, kid-friendly. 26.7MB, which isn't much compared to Sonic, I guess.

Oh, that's strange. Here in the UK we've got Skateboard Party.

Usually they are the same app on both sides of the pond.

Some times they change the FAOTD during the day, so if you look at it early and late that are different.

Agree about the calculator. How many do you need at one time??

Today: "Alpha Wave", a simple shoot-em-up time-killer, generally positive reviews. At 25MB, I'm gonna grab it and kill some aliens over lunch.

There is a new app on Google Play called Giveaway of the Day. It lists paid apps that are FREE for a limited time on Google Play.

The Amazon Store app on my phone just tried to update, but then it failed. No idea what went wrong.

Meanwhile, today's FAOTD is "Tipping Point", a puzzle game that they show being used on a widescreen TV (really?). So it's full of pretty graphics, as is clear from the 168MB file size. As for permissions, it just wants to surf the 'net, so I think we can sympathize with its plight.

I read the description, looked at the screen shots and watched the video and still didn't see the point to it.

Today's is a number-matching game called "Numolition". The major privacy issue, according to the comments, is that it isn't fully functional unless you let it connect to your Facebook. (Which I find intrusive, and it makes it hard to explain to non-techies why you shouldn't accept every FB game request.)

The 4/22 FAOTD is Quest Winterland, a hidden objects game with No permissions and almost all 5 star ratings.

04/29: "Stand O'Food", a fast food simulation. Network permissions, 22MB. Too big for me, but it looks pretty enough to be worth it. (Will grab it just to have it in my "you bought it" list!)

I think I've said before that I once dreamed of writing a program that would simulate the challenges of flipping burgers - usually, I was dreaming that while flipping burgers at Sonic. Unfortunately, the most portable device at the time was my TRS-80 Model 100, with a 240x64 LCD display (black and white). I wrote a digital clock program that drew big numbers on the display... it took several seconds to paint the display, making the clock a little misfunctional.

Today (5/28) may be a winner: Mathlab Graphing Calculator, normally a $5.99 app. One reviewer described it as the Halo for the Kindle Fire, because it's the sort of app that makes your hardware purchase worth it. A bit hyperbolic (ha) but the reviews are all pretty good. And it's only 1.5MB, so I went for it. Some initial poking shows that it makes good use of limited screen space on my phone, so I bet it rocks on a tablet.
