AMOLED or SLCD

Hi guys,

Finally received my Desire form Vodafone yesterday after waiting 3 weeks!

Was wondering if there was anyway of telling if you have an AMOLED or SLCD screen?

Thanks :)

Just Curious!

on back of the box it just says " Vivid 3.7-inch touch-sensitive screen".
No mention of AMOLED or SLCD.

On an amoled screen the blacks should be jet black, if you check in a dark room & its an lcd version the blacks always got a luminescence to them that gives them a greyish cast

if you have a magnifying glass then you can tell as the AMOLED has more separated sub-pixels, however it is much more vibrant and has deeper blacks than an LCD is able to achieve.

Outside AMOLED does suffer unless it's turned up to the highest brightness.

I am very happy with my Desire and I honestly don't think you'd appreciate a massive difference unless you put them side by side.

I just checked on the back of the box i have for my desire and it does say 3.7 inch AMOLED touch sensitive screen.

So i assume if it does not say that on your box you have the super LCD version.

Out of interest what model number does it say on the back? Mine says A8181.

Mine specifically says AMOLED. It could mean you have an SLCD one, but its more likely they've just pre-emptively removed it from their packaging, so it could be either

You could try turning it to a wide viewing angle to see if the colours start to grey/whiten, which would be a sign it's a LCD.

Ok guys,

Ive taken a picture of the back of the box. Think I have SLCD as there is no mention of AMOLED.

Also there seems to be problems with the screen, Ive noticed that there is bleeding on thee top left & right of the screen. (Don't think AMOLED suffers from bleeding). (Picture also provided).

Returning to Vodafone for new one!

wow that bleeding doesnt look so great, if the screen was AMOLED that defenitly wouldnt be happening... AMOLED screens are now a desireable feature, I think if your phone had it than the box would defenitly say so on it somwhere...

My box specifically states under 'Display' back there that it is an AMOLED, nothing like that is in those screenshots and the bleed should not be common for AMOLED at all.

Yeah, mine is very clear it is an AMOLED Screen. Looks light you got a LCD screen there, and a duff one at that.

you most likely have an SLCD then, got my desire a few months ago and it specifically says AMOLED on the back..

Hey i read this on one of tw forum
i havent got a desire and never tried this but just provide this method hope its helpful

look for P/N:

SLCD → 99HKZ 102-00
AMOLED → 99HKZ 002-00

I got my desire a week ago, and it's the LCD one.

The model number seems to be the same, mine says A8181 but the Display Specifications does not say AMOLED. I have a friend that got his desire a month plus back and the model is the same but his box says AMOLED.

I read somewhere in the forums that if it's an AMOLED it'll say AMOLED if not then it's the LCD.

No mention of AMOLED or SLCD.

On the back of my box it says "3.7-inch AMOLED touch-sensitive screen"

And at the top of thr box in the Highlights bit it mentions AMOLED again.

Hi... I'm definitely buying a Desire in the UK this week... My question is if I should be bothered about the introduction of the SLCD? ie should I buy an AMOLED off ebay, as there are a couple of new ones knocking about over there, or should I just forget about it and by a brand-new Desire with SLCD off amazon? Thanks

I wouldn't worry about the SLCD vs AMOLED debate, unless you spent most of your time in extreme darkness (get AMOLED) or in bright sunlight (get SLCD).

I almost certainly have an SLCD one as the blacks aren't completely black as you get a minor bit of backlight bleed, but in normal use, it's a vivid, colourful and very good resolution screen. Quality photos just leap off it, text is crisp even at extreme viewing angles which you'd never look at a phone at anyway.
