Android 2.0.1 Findings!!!

Appears that the Facebook Widget is fixed and now updates more regularly than the 2.0 version.

Don't like the new Calendar Widget. The 2.0 one was color coded for each member of my family as shown on my Google Calendar. The new one is only black. Also wish there was an option to have that calendar only show my appointments instead of whoever is next on my active Google calendars.

I got the update last night, and can observe a few things so far.

Seems to be quicker and smoother switching between the home screens, and pulling down the notification windowshade. It also seems to grab onto 3G signal better - I was usually getting 1-2 bars, sometimes it would drop and switch to 1X. Occasionally, it would jump to 4 bars on 3G, but it wouldn't stay.

This is all while I'm at home.

One thing still happens, though - if I have WiFi on, the cell signal drops down to 1 bar or down to 1X. If I turn off WiFi, within moments the cell signal jumps to 3-4 bars. Odd.

Also in the multimedia dock last night, even though I had at least 2 bars on 3G or with WiFi on, it would not update the weather widget. And the soft key backlight still never turns off.

Haven't messed with the browser yet, but will probably do so now.

My 1x signal still stinks whether or not WiFi is on. 3G performance for me was great before the update and even better now.

Try Calwidget...free and has extensive formatting/display options available. Much better than the built-in calendar widget.

the omnia does. you can customize the landscape home to have different widgets than the portrait home. also, everything can be voice activated, like gps, music, contacts, messages. you name it. it does it. winmo phones are far more advanced .... but super freakin clunky and the learning curve is ridiculous. the 5mpxl cam on the omnia absolutely smokes my droid's. i can tell you from personal experience that the samsung omnia would have been one of the best phones on the market had it not been for the jagged, clunky, and overly difficult os. i love my droid, and i'm not going back to winmo anytime soon, but google has a lot to learn about what "does" means. the "droid does" commercial got me on day one, but let's be honest. it "does" half of what it says it does. i still can't use voice search to pull up music. i still can't rotate to landscape home without opening the keyboard, i still can't watch flash on my browser. this is only the tip, but i digress. i'm sure google will shape it up ... i mean, the developers that root this phone and create the apps we want will shape it up. google will just kinda let them.

The Omnia camera was horrible. As bad as the Droid camera may be (not that bad, really), the Omnia camera was worse...

Also, I installed a hacked WM6.5 ROM onto the Omnia, updating it biweekly with the newest builds. While WM6.5 was constantly improving, it didn't compare anywhere close to the Droid in performance.

Also, in what regards did it excel in 'advances'? While the interface may have been more complex, and the menus perhaps offer further configuration, most of it I can find in the Droid, and what I cannot find, doesn't really interest me.

Additionally, you're comparing a nonrooted Droid to a hacked WM6.5 cooked ROM (presumably). Wait until the Droid gets custom ROMs and do another comparo. Already by rooting the Droid, you get access to a full terminal console. That in itself spells C-U-S-T-O-M-I-Z-A-B-L-E.

Got my update last night about 2 am.

So of the things I have noticed, some have been noticed by other but I'll comment on why I think they are better.

First the arch versus the new unlock. I always seemed to have a problem with the arch. Sometimes it would get about mid way and not complete the arch which made trying to answer a call a pita if you had to do the motion a couple of times. The new way seems to be more responsive and works fine for me.

The search widget on the home screen, has been set a little lower from the top pull down. This looks funny with the gap but works a lot better. Sometimes with trying to grab the notification bar I would always hit the stupid search, now I don't because of the new position.

Another thing, when on the home screen and if you scroll left or right, previously, if I would hit the back button the screen would go back to home, that no longer does that. Scrolling between screens seems to be more seemless though.

In the camera, there used to be a setting for incandescent, that is no longer there.

Build number has changed from esd20 to esd56.

It would appear that the display usuage is lower than usually reported.

13 hours off of charger and I have 50% battery, I think that is normal for what I have been doing.

Signal strength looks to be the same for me at this location at -87dBm

There is most certainly an issue with the browser in the update.... browsing is a horrible experience now... lots of lag when scrolling and typing within the browser

I just checked my camera mode and incandesent is there. It lists Auto, Incandescent, Daylight, Flourescent, and Cloudy under the white balance options on the left side of the screen.

Well couple days with manual update here and I have to say battery life seems better
full charge thur night, left off charger overnight woke up battery was at 90, various emails, texts throughout day (id say screen on for about 4hours total for the day) , did about 2 hours straight web surfing, played games for about hour, had 4 calls (about 30min total) and at 10pm last night battery was at 30

This is my second update, did it as soon as it was up and seemed to be little weird so i redownloaded it, then did update again and its great now.

As far as all my info, contacts where there after update all settings were the same as before. I think I might see what others mean about the browser but its not bad. and I do believe the reason its like this is the tried to fix the problem with the screen flicking all the way down like before, its really due to the great touch sensitivity this droid has which in my opinion is far better than any other device out there today.
my past touch screens BB and WM devices I hated text from screen with my finger size I would make too many mistakes but this droid screen I hardly mistype at all and have gotten very fast in texting/emailing so much so I hardly ever open the reg keyboard, lol

Overall i am a very happy Droid owner and cant wait for better things to come
wish I could send a mp3 file in mms (can email them and any other file with astro) but hey thats not enough to make me hate the droid.

to dbol: I had the omnia and in my opinion its camera was super great, I loved how quick it was and people couldnt tell pics were taken with it when I showed them pics on my laptop. I thought quality was great

I don't know if it's the update that's causing this but:

Gmail will not connected. It always says "No connection". This is the worst problem I've had with the Droid so far. Not cool.

When I restart the phone, it first comes on at full brightness and stays until the screen shuts off the first time. No big deal, but adds to the buggy feeling I now have of my phone.

Also all the shortcuts and widgets just disappeared after I added a contact. I had to restart the phone and they reappeared.

This whole no email thing sucks. I have a support email in to Motorola, but no reply yet.

OK, so I just realized that the shortcuts and widgets disappear when I slide open the keyboard. I have to restart the phone to get them back. Lame!
