Android 2.0.1 Findings!!!

Is this update the kind of thing I would want to backup my Droid before doing?

No one has reported any data issues from the update...I'd expect that's the least of your worries.

What do you have on it (the Droid, not your SD card) that isn't in the cloud? All my contacts/calendar/email is in the cloud...if my Droid died today I'd just get a new one, put my microSD card into it and everything would sync down to it just like my old one...nothing lost.

Those who have updated, PLEASE answer:

Does the phone finally go into landscape mode on the homescreen WITHOUT having to open up the keyboard? I really hate that about this otherwise amazing product.

Just use Home++, rotates the screen.

Thanks for the product recommendation, but even so, this is a basic feature that needs to built into the OS. Anybody know if it's been fixed?

EDIT: Crap, tgranted. Crap. Seriously? So when is this gonna be dealt with? This couldn't possibly be a "feature" right?

I use pandahome.. fixes the rotation "issue"(since it's not an issue just standard). Of course the extra screens/docks/options/theme compatibility/etc. are an added bonus. Beh on the original homescreen setup lol.

Pandahome or GDE are good homescreen apps. I use GDE.

I just hope this update fixes the force close with email and messaging and fix the problem of my sms messages mysteriously deleting themselves.

Can I ask why this is such a big deal? I don't think I've ever had a moment where it really pained me not to be able to flip the home screens into landscape mode.

heh, i got dxTop home replacement (excellent app, BTW) and was excited about its ability to rotate the home screen, and after a couple days i turned it off cuz it ended up being annoying. so in my case it is a "feature" although an option would be nice for those who can't live without it.

I have a makeshift car mount in my car that is permanently horizontal. When the screen locks, I have to put the unlock code from a different angle, navigate contacts, and in general navigate the phone from a bad angle. Then finally when an actual app opens up, the phone goes into landscape mode. Super pain in the ass. I even have to scroll through my contacts list horizontally.

Another thing. You now have to close an open sms msg before you can open another msg thats sitting in the notification bar. Before the update, you can just pull the notification bar down onto an open sms dialogue box and select a new one. Maybe thats a way to keep from getting force closes and/or mysteriously deleted msgs.

I've had some time to determine if signal strength has been improved with this update. First some background...

I've been a Verizon customer for about 20 years. I moved to my current home about 6 years ago. For most of the 6 years, I've had signal strength issues at my home. It was so bad that Verizon sent some engineers out to test the area to determine if there were any problems. They found nothing inherently wrong with the network so I had to deal with it. For most of the time I had a blackberry. It would constantly go in and out of 3G while at my home and you can imagine what that did to the battery.

I got the Droid a month ago when it was released. It was MUCH better at holding a 3G signal than the blackberry but I would still notice some switching from time to time.

When I woke this morning, I could see a marked improvement in signal strength. I started wondering if it really was an improvement or if Verizon just played with the signal strength monitor.

Well, almost 7 hours after I removed it from the charger, I'm at 90% of my battery! Keep in mind that I've been playing with this phone a lot because of the update. This makes me think that yes, the update did improve signal strength which resulted in improved battery life.

I'll keep sharing observations as they happen...

There's one other thing I noticed. I think this is new...

I've got my screen to go to sleep after one minute. With the update, a few seconds before the screen goes dark, it dims slightly.

I've noticed these subtle changes throughout. With each change of screen or command, there's a nice animation. Everything seems to flow smoother. I guess you can say the "feng shui" is better now on the Droid.

It's not new. I still have 2.0 and my screen has done this since I got the phone 2 weeks ago. I also have the screen set at 1 minute.

Not true...I have open SMS dialogues and can go directly to messages through the notification bar.

I haven't been able to do it all morning. Maybe its because I am using Handcent. I will try it with the stock app and get back to you. I have to wait for someone to text me lol.

That may be it. I'm using the stock app and it works fine.

I got it this morning (note to others, it will not update if the battery is drained so either keep it charged or bring a charger with you).

The one odd thing that did happen to me is that the facebook app required me to put in my info again. Besides that everything is fine.

Its not the second coming, but it a nice bug fix.

Good looking out...how is the 'dBm' value (Settings > About >Phone status > signal strength?). There are several people, my self included, who are interested in outcome. Maybe check in other "known weak signal" areas for confirmation?

Its confirmed. I can do it on the stock msg app but not with Handcent. Thaks Dabrador

add a magnet to your mount. that will put it into the "Car Mode".

or to get around the issue where the SMS was from one person, but showed up in another person's thread. ESPN sent me an SMS, it showed up in their thread, but had my boss' name beside the message...every message in the thread had my boss' name, yet they were from ESPN and in ESPN's thread.
