When HTC decided originally to embrace Android, they should have considered the implications of their sense customisation being tied to it - by holding back an Android update we are deprived access to new apps and older app's updates, so this places an extra burden of responsibility on them to deliver - not essentially their fault but a failing of the way Android itself is being updated. I personally don't expect new interface bells and whistles for free, but I do expect to access all the apps.

If the poll has a huge result in favor of "being quiet" can we start banning moaning gits, who complain about having to wait??

Insightful information for HTC Hero owners when researching info about upcoming HTC Legend:
The revamped Sense UI (Hero owners will be glad to know they're entitled to a free upgrade) is multi-touch enabled and has a feature called Leap to let you view all homescreen panes at once with a pinch gesture. Social network integration has also stepped up with FriendStream offering live contact updates, images and links in your networks of choice.
It goes on by telling the Legend will become available by end of March, beginning of April, which is consistent with the rumour of Android 2.1 upgrade becoming available around that time too. However, I think it would be expected of HTC not to release Android 2.1 for Hero before having HTC Legend on the market for a few days, so my prediction is that we'll get the upgrade AFTER the Legend is available in April.

It defeats me how anybody can get so angry about this. I tried the vanillian Rom by nprussel for a couple of days. Google Nav is excellent, goggles and live wallpapers are fun but pointless, buzz is fundamentaly crap. Can't say I was bothered about any other features.

I'm back to modaco now because it's abit snappier, we are not missing much.

Edit: if a friend is available in chat it shows the green dot on their contact info which was quite cool.

I agree. Also the desire will be avail. in april... so we will deffinately get the update after that. So "mid-march" becomes a fantasy, just as "mid-feb" did.

I love all those who say: "they are giving it for free so shut the f%#k up".

It seems you did not hear about the open source revolution, where many applications are just used and updated constantly.
Now Android is open, and Google knows this is their advantage over other non open competitors (iphone anyone?). But HTC think they live 10 years ago when people where just happy their software worked at all.

This is not how you compete in todays mobile world!
Update, progress, invent, stay ahead.

I thought this was HTC, but maybe I was wrong. Android 1.5?! come on, it's old...

Yes older than 2.x different to iPhone, Older than what else? name me another currently available non Android device that lives up to 1.5 ..

I don't care about non android devices, I just want Android apps. This is why we all bought the phone. Not for talking and texting. My old Nokia did this great.

Most of the good apps (even Google's) don't work on 1.5 because it's just so old.

OK name one I cant live without app that wont run on 1.5 ?

That's easy:
New Android market
Google goggles
Google navigation
Google maps 4
Google buzz
Fresh Face
Firefox
Adobe Flash 10
Missed Call
CompareAnywhere
AppManager
Tricorder
...

And probably hundreds more I don't even know of.
It's olddddd

New Android market (I have always found everything I have needed, who browses the market anyway?)
Google goggles (shame Hero's camera sucks ass)
Google navigation (Hero will never make a good nav, screens too small)
Google maps 4 (My maps work perfectly well)
Google buzz (*Sigh*)
Fresh Face (More custermisation, hardly life or death)
Firefox (Cant argue with that, didnt realise they weren't releasing a 1.5 version)
Adobe Flash 10 (Agreed)
Missed Call (my phone already gives me this info)
CompareAnywhere
AppManager
Tricorder (not sure how I have survived this far without this App!)

So basically I agree that 2 of those would be nice, hardly makes the phone "Old", my point is, yes we could have some new toys to play with, but thats all they are..non of them are critical apps!!

To be fair to people I think one of the things that is causing people to become frustrated is that it was first mooted in October that the Hero would get 2.x. I think HTC would have been better just releasing it rather than telling people it was coming and not giving them any sort of timescale. I think the other thing that makes it difficult for people to understand is that HTC have other phones like the Nexus that have 2.x with sense UI so it's not clear why there's a delay. It's a bit like your missus telling you you're going to get some soon and then just putting you off day after day.. ;) you could understand how that might become frustrating. :o

I notice you never mentioned a new Bluetooth stack, that would make me V happy, the current one is suckage!!

Agreed, I cant understand childish rants though~!!

Okay, how about "stop ranting at we users and go bother HTC instead"? :)

It seems you did not hear about the open source revolution, where many applications are just used and updated constantly.

Please don't patronise us. We know all about open-source.... however the apps, widgets and SenseUI added by HTC on the Hero aren't open-source.

Yup, so HTC design the Nexus One for Google. And the Desire (which is top of my wish-list right now on looks alone!), the Incredible, the Legend, the Tattoo.... You have to face it, your beloved Hero is no longer the bleeding-edge handset it was nine months ago. HTC make no money from giving away updates for handsets they've already sold , so we're low down the pecking order. It's a fact of life.

Exactamon .... I dont go onto Samsungs forums complaining my LCD does not have LED backlights or even AMOLED, if they dont upgrade Hero straigh away, some customers may move u p a handset, but lets face it, who are they going to lose customers to... HTC have the phones, they have the OS they have the power.

You have a choice, wait/upgrade/or get an iPhone!

Rankon,

We know all about open-source.... however the apps, widgets and SenseUI added by HTC on the Hero aren't open-source.

I couldn't have said it better.

Rankon, you got your toy, you got what you paid for, you got your open source OS along with a non-open source UI, and soon you'll be getting an upgrade for both at no cost. Companies are required to keep their products working by issuing UPDATES free of charge (bug fixes, firmware optimizations, etc). Do not confuse this with UPGRADES (which is the case here and for which HTC doesn't have to do and yet, still will for free). Be quiet and be thankful.

I guess we couldn't get any more official than that, could we? ;-)

My issue is not with waiting on the update, its with HTC not being forthcoming as to when it will actually be released, a 6 month window is too big, they have a better idea as to when a release date is than what they're letting on.

I also blame Google for not making more efforts to make they're apps backwards compatible, in fact i believe the responsibility lies more with them than HTC.

I'm also of the thinking that while it would surely be nice and very appreciated to get Android 2.1 officially realeased for the Hero, it is NOT a contractual obligation of HTC to do so. When we bought the phone, we bought it with a running OS that did what it promised to do, and later they even relesed a subsecuent upgrade without having to.

So to come here and complaint about how much time it takes for HTC to GIVE US SOMETHING FOR FREE is rather childish (and yes, I want the upgrade too).

maybe so, but I paid 600.00 for a phone and i expected it to be able to be upgraded, not be outdated 1 month after I bought it. At least with a pc you can upgrade software until the hardware can no longer handle it, letting you keep an expensive device longer.
