Guys, the ota updates are rolled out in a phased fashion over the span of a few days. This is done ny design so that any problems can be spoted early before everyone gets a potentially bad update. the fact that you havent gotten it yet doesnt mean a thing.

so just out of curiosity people go to your settings scroll down to about phone click it then scroll down to build number and what does your build number say?
DanSan, your theory isn't looking so hot anymore.

Droid Forum - Covering all Verizon Droid Phones & the Motorola Droid

"We were expecting an update to happen this week beginning on January 22nd but folks its arriving early! Verizon is pushing out a 61.4 MB maintenance release today ahead of schedule that should get users excited for whats soon to come. We haven't seen reports of the version / build number change, although we believe there is still something going on behind the scenes and soon, that will update to 2.0.1 ESD59.

Our sources have indicated Android 2.1 has passed all internal testing on the Droid and a target is to have all Droids updated before the end of the month. This patch had added some minor fixes and preps the phone for a smooth Android 2.1 RELEASE. To be clear, the forthcoming immediate update is not 2.1, but a precursor to smooth the transition to 2.1 which will follow within the next couple of weeks. Stay Tuned, more details to come!

+1 for an informative post and not just adding to the "i didnt get mine yet" list.
Although, i didnt get mine yet. :p:p

i agree with onefix,

i do not believe that this update has anything to do with 2.1...there is NO proof AT ALL!

these are just articles and rumors to bring traffic to their site.

I bought my Droid last friday (1/15) and i was able to upgrade facebook to 1.1.2 and have no problems with it. If i do not get an update then this proves that it has nothing to do with 2.1

Did anyone stop to think that obviously Motorola has been testing 2.1 since the SDK was released and that there was probably an issue upgrading to 2.1 from that buggy original 2.01 update that was released? So this patch which may or may not get pushed out to everyone (they may do it just to be safe) does in fact directly relate to the 2.1 upgrade since some people would have issues or not be able to upgrade at all with without this patch.

i would say motorola has had 2.1 much longer then just when the SDk was released to the "public"

Assumptions:

1. Bandwidth is bad to waste, and a 64MB download to thousands of phones will "waste" a good chunk of bandwidth
2. Verizon/Moto are not stupid (hold the sarcasm, for now anyway) ;)
3. Any update adds risk of support problems and issues that will cost VZW money, therefore updates should be limited to those absolutely required.

Assuming above, then the only reason for pushing an update at this time would be that it's required on some phones for the "imminent" 2.1 update to install properly, or that there is some legal issue involved w/the affected phones which forced their hand at this time. Seems more likely the former, but obviously none of us know if it's above, or some other issue.

If it's about fixing a subset of affected phones, then VZW must have decided it was less risky/cheaper to patch the affected phones and then roll out a single 2.1 patch for all phones, rather than trying to roll out a 2.1 patch that would work for both situations.

It is very odd that a patch doesn't increment version numbers, but if the only change is to a bundled app (Facebook), and if the patch only runs/applies on affected phones, then an argument could be made to keep the version the same...but it is potentially "messy" from a sw mgt perspective to release an "undocumented" patch like this where there isn't an obvious way to tell it's been applied via version numbers...makes it harder to support/troubleshoot/test, etc.

Hopefully we'll see the real 2.1 update soon so the devs can use it to craft a really fast, stable 2.1 ROM for us rooties. :D

so here is a question, i am rooted, will that make it so i do not get this 2.0.1 temp update?

Rooting kills OTA updates so I've heard. You will most likely have to wait for the update file to be uploaded somewhere, and do a manual upgrade.

I'm pretty sure it's the other way around. If you're rooted, you can manually disable OTA updates, but by default, you should still receive them.

However, if you do decide to do the OTA update, it will most likely kill your root access.

On a side note, why is this seemingly useless update 64MB, while the update that actually added features (2.0.1) was only 10MB? Seems like a waste of bandwidth to me.

one never knows and they won't explain it, i haven't got it yet and i will wait til someone of hackery status gets it to explain what it is.

My current build is ESD56 and I have had no OTA updates.

i got the OTA update the other night but my build is still ESD56. i'm pretty sure my fb worked before the OTA update, though, since i just got this particular droid last week and i had to resync my contacts. i don't think the OTA update had anything to do with fb, or if it did, it was incidental to whatever else it's for.

If you are rooted and have NOT deleted the otacerts file then you WILL get the ota update. End of story....i cant believe the amount of misinformation in this thread.

What if I'm not rooted? Or what if I've thought about rooting but didn't tell anyone and only kissed a girl once? Would Verizon know?

I for one would really like to know how many people are actually getting this. When the last update came out, it was all over the news and blogs. This purported update has been limited to a handful of people and Verizon itself has already told one user that no update is underway. This whole situation and all this speculation are fruitless, and seem to be fed by Droid users' extreme desire for 2.1, and the need to convince themselves it is coming. I need facts, not wishful thinking, to explain what is/is not going on.

If this were actually being rolled out, we would be hearing a lot more buzz.
