Root Android 4.2 for the DHD

ral

Android Expert
The good thing is that Android development for the DHD has picked up a lot with the release of Android 4.2. That bad thing is that they are all rather similar.

AOSP/AOKP DHD 4.2 Roms:

JellyTime 4.2 by Randomblame

codefireX SR 19 by synergy

codefireX nigthlies

JDQ39 by pipelinerard. This ROM is on a weekly release cycle, every Friday.

AOKP JBean by pipelinerard. This ROM is on a weekly release cycle, every Sunday.

CyanogenMod 10.1 Nightlies by Mustaavalkosta

CyanogenMod 10.1 M-Series releases by Mustaavalkosta - This ROM is on a monthly release cycle

Dirty Unicorn 4.2.2

Those who want the stock CM experience are best of with Mustaavalkosta releases and JDQ39. The others have more tweaks.

I am going on a mountain climb this weekend so I am leaving everything as is, but I already downloaded Mustaavalkosta M series for flashing after that.

Now JB 4.2 ROM's still have some issues. I was hoping we could post issues and compare each ROM here. Really no fun having to flash 6 identical ROM's, which three being updated on a weekly basis just to try to resolve small issues like:

  • The display turning green for a second as it displays camera preview
  • Inability to manually select 2G/3G in settings - Fixed
  • Battery history not display awake time

The issues on this list are what I encountered with the previous release of JB-JP40D (now JDQ39).
None of the issues are really worth flashing to fix :)

Maybe collectively we can pick the best two jewels of these six?

This could be a useful thread as it's always a pain to figure out what works and what doesn't from a 50 page xda dev. thread! Anyhow, the ones you meantioned:

  • The display turning green for a second as it displays camera preview
Don't have and have never seen this problem. I normally use CameraZoomFX but also tested the stock cam just now.

  • Inability to manually select 2G/3G in settings
Hmmm. There is the ability to 'turn off mobile data' which is turning off 3G in effect and this is the same as I've always used. To turn off 2G you'd need to use airplane mode.

  • Battery history not display awake time
Again, not sure this is an issue. It isn't for me anyhow. Obviously if it is for you then hassle the devs.

The major thing that held me back from 4.2 was the lack of BT but that works fine for me now (CodefireX - oh, and it's SR6 since earlier today - you're soooooo out of touch!! :-) ).

Anyone else?

Dave

@ivacakc

I trust Mustaavalkosta resolved your issue with network selection.

Does CM10.1 display wake times properly? Not really much of an issue, but can be useful in resolving battery issues.

@Dave

Yup, really no deal breakers left. Basically, when you have 6 almost perfect ROM's its harder to choose

i'm agree with you, completely.

yes, issue with network selection is resolved, now it's working..

display wake time, like you say, it's not kind an issue, but not, it's not showing it like it should be..look screenshot..

It is kind of nice when we are discussing minor issues like this :D Because it means there is nothing bigger.

Ultimately, it looks like what will distinguish the AOKP ROM's are the tweaks. The direct CM 10.1 ports, will be pretty much identical.

Hey guys, quick question if I may. I fancy trying out the Nightlies ROM, will it work OK on my DHD?....I'm currently using the CM7 ROM.

I guess I just load this, as I did that one, i.e. via ROM manager > Reboot to recovery > Format system/data/cache > Wipe Data/Factory Reset > Install the new zips.

Would that be correct? Sorry to sound hesitant, I'm new to rooting / ROMS.

Many thanks

hello...first, flash 4ext recovery..it's the best recovery for DHD...after that, go to recovery...do a full wipe..then install zip from sd card, just navigate to the folder were you put your new rom, flash it, after that flash gapps and you are ready to go...
and at this moment a think that the best 4.2 rom is CyanogenMod 10.1 Nightlies by Mustaavalkosta or M serises, both are from Mustaavalkosta..you will not regret either of these two :)
i'm on M series :)

M series? I have to flash another rom?

I haven't managed to get all my data back since I moved on from ARHD for the first time. Might try to reinstall the backup and try a TB backup.

M-series is very good rom, it's based on month release..and as for the date backup, I use mybackup root, and don't have any problem, all date are restored.

I like the way your WIFI/Network signal icons are red and blue... is that something you've done yourself or was that standard with the ROM you are on now?

Is FM radio is working on 4.2. I've tried two rom Jelly time 4.2 R7 and UNOFFICIAL CM10.1 JellyBean Nightlies. Both rom doesn't have FM app. Also, in both rom suddenly you will get message Google search is stopped working .

Anyone have a 4.2.2 ROM with auto-rotate working out of the box? I have tried the workarounds on mine (flashing a sense ROM then 4.2 etc) but nothing seems to work. I'm on cfx at the moment and don't want to flash the latest as SR19 doesn't have TB working ..!!!! I rely on that ....

Ta.
