Root Android development Windows VS Linux

OK we have some great devs here so lets hear from some of you.

I am new to android dev work. Any other dev work I have done in the past has been in MS environments. I see lots of tutorials for both MS and Linux based programs but lets hear from the pros.

Which OS do you guys prefer to work in? Be specific which windows or which linux and prefer 32/64bit do you prefer to dev in a vm? Also be sure to specify whether you work with kernels/roms or applications or maybe a little or lot of both.

I am just curious as I want to start sooner than later and have started setting up an ubuntu 12.04.1 environment to work in for reasons I will not post atm, But if there is a better environment then I would like to know before I get too deep into this.

Sorry if this should be in a general dev section but I want to make sure the prevail devs see it.
 
I duel boot windows 7 and ubuntu 11.10 and I use both depending on what I'm doing, even tho I could do everything from ubuntu if I need to I still like windows more.

I use ubuntu for building kernels/roms from source and windows for theming or editing existing files like apk's, jar's, xml's, config files, shit like that.
 
i dual boot win7/ubuntu 11.10 as well..but if i had to pick i would say i like windows..ubuntu has been a struggle for me..still having a hard time figureing crap out
 
Would it benefit me more to go with an older linux distro or should I be fine with 12.04 as I am not that familiar with linux command. I must admit that I have had a little difficulty with ubuntu but nothing I couldn't figure out yet. I have a good background in computers in general and used to program way back when of course standards have changed a lot since then. I mean I programmed before c+ and dot net. So any suggestions would be very helpful.

I do have ebooks on just about any and every language so I should be good there.

I do appreciate all the input so far and would love to hear more.
 
Any linux gurus here? I locked myself out of ubuntu.

I am going to. I just had to take a break and fix dinner. I saved xp vm on ext hdd so I am good there just need to re-install the other stuff. This is just a temp setup anyway until I get my main rig back. Currently working on an xp netbook without enough room to install new .net framework only has 8gb SSD 1.2g CPU and 1gb RAM. But it serves its purpose of learning and runs ubuntu fairly well. Thinking about just making an ubuntu netbook need to learn linux better anyway and making a live xp usb. Is 8gb enough room to work with. I have a 2tb ext hdd to store source and everything on.

Main rig is dual core 2.5g OC'ed to 3.0g CPU 6gb RAM 64bit win 7. 320gb primary with 2 x 320gb and 1 x 500gb slave drives and 1gb GDDR5 RAM video. Gonna dual with 64bit ubuntu unless people here talk me into going 32bit ubuntu.

Hit that issue before finding something to cook and just posted here since it was quick and easy. Don't really care about os getting lost as it is only temp setup. I kinda gimped up first persistent install anyway kind of a sidetrack of original thread. But it never hurts to know who is the guru of certain fields in case I every get stuck and really need assistance in a pinch.
 
I do everything in Linux except for LGNPST, ODIN, or Photoshop, and for those I boot to Win7.

Linux Mint 13 with XFCE is my daily OS. ;)

In your opinion how is mint vs ubuntu? And I have never used xfce I believe I can install that on ubuntu. How would you say it runs/looks compared to GNOME/KDE environments? BTW looks are not that important to me.

Mint is build on top of Ubuntu so not a big difference. On Ubuntu I used KDE, which I love, but it was nothing but buggy, so I went to Mint 13 n cinnamon. Cinnamon was nice, but it broke with the first update I took lol. So I started using Mate then, which is a variant of gnome. But I think I fell in love with XFCE tho lol, its light , easy on resources n well mine looks awesome lol.

I was looking at screenshots of xfce earlier and it looks like it would be comfortable to work with. I may just patch that in ubuntu to try it out.

And I have to agree that is a nice setup. I'm an intel man myself but can't say anything bad about amd.

As a matter of fact I had an OLD don't laugh k6 that I just retired early last year. It was in an old play pc for the kids. But to last that long is just ridiculous for a processor it ran 24/7 and still worked when I retired it.
