I used to face the same problems... I uninstalled Kies using the kies uninstaller and then tried executing the android file transfer software.. and it worked flawlessly...

Kies used to hang frequently while copying files from fone to my mac... but as mentioned in one of the threads here.. I un-installed kies and tried Android file transfer and it worked.

thanks..

If you have more than 1 android device, you may have to uninstall Kies once for each one you have ever connected and do a clean install of Android File Transfer.

Everything was initially fine using my Note II phone. Then I installed Kies and added a Note 10.1 tablet and NOTHING worked. Couldn't even use Kies to transfer files.

Uninstalled Kies using their uninstall tool once, still got the NO DEVICE message. Uninstalled Kies with phone connected, then repeated the uninstall with the tablet connected.

Uninstalled Mac Android File Transfer using AppCleaner (finds and kills the orphan support and preference files that usually get left behind if you just to a finder delete of the application.

Re-installed Android File transfer and we are now good to go.

Okay, this is dumb, but it worked.

I changed USB cables. Then suddenly my Mac was all, "Hey, you plugged something in!"
Then I made sure under "PC Connection" in Settings, then "USB Connection Type", MTP (Media Sync) was selected. I did switch to Camera (PTP) and back to MTP. Then it worked. It was finicky, but it worked.

I agree with Dinyka. Had to use the USB 3.0 cable that shipped with my Galaxy S5. Could not connect to my Mac (OS 10.3.3) no matter what was rebooted or what was reinstalled. Never used Kies. Also,
it was necessary to plug the USB 3.0 cable into the USB port on the RIGHT-HAND side of the Mac. Maybe the other port is only 2.0? MTP transfers now work. Thanks to everyone above.

Well, I'm scratching my head now. Simon is right. My MacBook Pro Retina (OS 10.10.3) has 2 USB 3.0 ports and since I switched the cable to the right port and back to the left, they both work using Android File Transfer and MTP. Kies was never a problem as it was never installed. Go figure.

So happy I eventually found this thread!! Android file transfer and Eclipse would not recognize my Samsung Galaxy S6. Uninstalling Kies via it's uninstall feature (even after having trashed it previously) did the trick: http://www.jrtstudio.com/iSyncr/UninstallKies

Make sure you elect to uninstall the drivers where prompted. After this Android File Transfer and Eclipse could recognize my S6!! Finally!!!!!

I had tried many things, installing Android File transfer before ever installing Kies, installing Kies, installing Smart Switch (which weirdly could recognize my device even when Android File Transfer and Eclipse couldn't).. blah blah.

When I uninstalled the Kies Drivers via the uninstall function in the download.. the state of my machine was:
  • Kies installed and then moved to trash via finder (Macbook Pro then restarted)
  • Android Transfer studio installed but not working
  • Smart Switch installed and working
After uninstalling the drivers my S6 was recognized immediately and without reboot by Android File Transfer and Eclipse

Kudos to you, B3nj1. My issue just cropped up today, so...well, there is nothing like good timing! The solution you offered worked for me like a charm, so now I can go look for other nails to hit with my hammer. Many thanks.

Happy to help AndroidKory!

I have done everything listed in the above posts and still no avail. I can not access the card in my galaxy s5 using the android file transfer. I can access the internal memory..but when i click on the card it gives me the error that my screen is locked and for me to disconnect phone..any other ideas...would uninstalling the android file transfer program and then re installing it help?

Neither Mac nor Linux PCs use usb drivers.

Reinstalling AFT won't change anything.

Sometimes going to the usb icon when plugged in and changing modes will help.

Maybe you don't install the USB driver , and did you enable USB debugging? and try to connect your device one more time, If it still not works, I suggest you try Kies app to do it.
You need to deinstall Kies if you want to communicate between Mac and Note. And you need to do it by going to the Play Store and deinstalling from there.

First thing to do might be to swap out the cable.

I don't know what Kies is and I did not install it. When I plugged my Galaxy S4 phone into my MacBook, a new driver came up from Verizon that did install a Samsung USB driver. Perhaps this driver is the same as Kies.
all I know is that I downloaded and ran the uninstallKies app and then Android File Transfer immediately worked. I didn't have to reboot the MacBook. Thanks!

The issue for me was that I had previously installed the Samsung Smart Switch application under Mac OS X. This app has priority over the Samsung device driver. After uninstalling Smart Switch and restarting, Android File Transfer works. Hope this helps. ~Brett

I have installed Android File Transfer on my Mac but, although it recognises when the phone is connected and autostarts, I get the error message "Could not connect to device. Try connecting or restarting your device."

Connecting doesn't work (it's already connected but disconnecting and reconnecting doesn't either) and nor does restarting.

Has anyone got this to work on their S4?

You must uninstall Kies for Mac before running Android File Transfer. Otherwise the application will not connect to your device. Move to trash for kies won't work. you have to uninstall using Kies installer. I got connected straight away after uninstall of kies.
  1. To uninstall Kies download the Kies for Mac software by visiting the Kies Website.
  2. From Finder click Go > Downloads > KiesMac_xxxx.dmg > Uninstall.
Go to this link for more details, http://www.samsung.com/uk/support/skp/faq/1032232

Wow! Just had to say thank you to everyone on this thread. I uninstalled that peaky Kies - which never did much for me any way - and BOOM! Android File Transfer works. I did have to change the USB connection to camera and then back again and it showed up! BINGO! I can see my files. I can drop in a music folder I need and I'm good to go. No more fighting with Kies or uploading to google music and then downloading on the phone. THANK YOU THANK YOU THANK YOU!!!

I installed AFT, restarted both my Mac and my Nexus 6, still didn't work, then I found a place in Settings on the N6 where I could change the USB connection type from "Charge Only" to one that allowed data transfer.

Check out Sunshine App, is the one I use and works perfect
