Android Lollipop - What do you expect from new Android version?

Google has announced the new version of Android Lollipop 5.0 What do you expect from new version of android. Do you have any idea of the features of Android Lollipop?

me getting far from Google and Android if that is the name they're going with...hell even KitKat was stupid but not that stupid.

Google hasn't announced the next major version of android

We also don't know what it will be called or what version number it is.

Anything saying otherwise is speculation.

I expect to see them keep stripping the OS down like they started doing with kitkat. I also look to see further advancements with Google Voice.

Further optimization for lower-spec handsets, and an ARMV6 compatible version. (One can dream!)

Better inter-device continuity. But if it doesn't happen, at least the developers have solutions. That's the beauty of Android.

Would like them to reverse their SD card changes, as I may go back to a Samsung phone.

A new UI would be nice. I love the current UI, but I like change.

IMO i am not in for change, especially the kinds of changes Google has done as of yet, with their hideous design aesthetic that also has the benefit of rendering my hardware menu key useless. that, and hiding vital features behind gestures (such as the stupid swipe to archive in Gmail that is often found by accident, or the tap-n-hold to select an email, which is inefficient compared with a checkbox) and adding redundant gestures to do common tasks (when i back out of a YouTube video, i don't have this insatiable need to continue watching it in a reduced form, and then having to swipe the screen, leaving a nasty smudge in the process to dismiss it. when i back out of a video, i want to actually BACK OUT! and go back to my search!)

sorry, change is nice, but so are options, which is the very foundation of Android. take those options away, or force us to give up apps made by Google for some third party alternative, and you start turning into Apple.

KitKat was pretty useless unless you have a Nexus 5--which got all the features. it got the new launcher (which is largely uncustomizable, i mean come on Google, you can do better than that!), the transparent status bars (absent from the Nexus 10 for no real good reason), and ART--the prime gimmick. absent from any other device EXCEPT the Nexus 5. so other than hideously blinding white icons now being the norm, the 'upgrade' is just yet another Jelly Bean unless you own the one Nexus product in the entire lineup.

Not sure i'm liking Google's new direction myself...change is nice, when we personally decide to do it ourselves. but when i get used to how an app, or UX works, i plan on sticking with it until i myself decide to change it. forcing it is just Apple territory. you know, 'we know what you want'. no thanks.

When i got the KitKat update on my tablet, i went for it because Samsung made some cool new features (i like the revised TouchWiz) that had to have KitKat in order to work. sadly, to those who say 'oh you can always uninstall the YouTube update, and get your back out of videos back' well no, you cannot. the update also updates any and all system apps, so now i have to make nasty swipe smudges when i choose to back out of videos. unless i wanted to root, kill Knox, introduce instability and also have to load up gigabytes of games again, when my only internet connection is my entire 4G LTE data plan, sorry, Google. not happening. too bad there's no other app that plays YouTube videos because Google's update to it sucks.

When did they announce it? You haven't posted a link.

I expect the end of Dalvik
ART being default with AOT compiling
Better battery life
Better memory management
Better Image processing
Improved multitasking
And hopefully better updates management/making it easier and faster for OEMs to tailor their updates.

It hasn't been officially announced yet unless I missed it.

Everything is still rumors to this point I think, name maybe not so much but still nobody knows if it's going to be 4.5 or 5.0

i'm hoping they bring google voice to hangouts.

ART should be default, though for some reason google left ART out of 4.4.3 altogether for the N7.

touchless control might be the key to the next update. my guess is that will be the focus on the next version....sort of bringing the moto x features to everyone, hardware permitting of course.

i have a strange feeling ART will just vanish into obscurity. Google will probably make an excuse like 'devices are so powerful today that ART is no longer needed' or something.

Not every android device is top of the line hardware wise. This should help out those buying devices on the lower end of the spectrum which is part of what 4.4 did by lowering the RAM requirement.

and who says Google even plans on supporting such 'older' hardware? look at how the main features of KitKat were omitted from even most of the Nexus line itself. the Nexus 10, Google's most powerful tablet, missed everything, including the status bars. ART is only available in the Nexus 5. the lower RAM requirement only helped with people's complaints of Android Lag. it helps scrolling remain smooth and gives an iOS level of fluid behavior throughout the OS.

ART is available on quite a few devices now.

I believe even the HTC M8 has it as an option .

As for googles choice to leave features off a certain product, only they could tell you why

ART is experimental only at this point, which is why it's in the developer's options which is hidden from the end user unless you searched the net to discover how to access it or just got lucky finding it. Every "feature" offered in developer options is not something designed for the general user to use. Chances are outside of ART and enabling USB debugging, I'm willing to bet those who aren't developers have even used or even know what half the options in there do/are used for.

ART was added because Google was toying with it to see if it would be a viable change from dalvik and to give app developers the opportunity to adjust their apps so that they could run in that mode in the event they dropped dalvik. I'm sure everyone who'd part of the android ecosystem would be livid if they dropped dalvik in favor or ART at the snap of a finger and suddenly many favorite apps wouldn't be working properly.

problem is that ART isn't even in the Developer Options on most devices running Android 4.4.2 at all. the Nexus 7, Nexus 10 and Samsung lineup has no such option for it. As for it being 'experimental' then suppose Google thinks the experiment has no value and kills it before it gets out to the next line of devices? that's my guess. they will just make another crap excuse that only iSheep would believe.

Without the main features that make it KitKat, it just reduces it to another Jelly Bean version to me. and i will stand by that until Google gets their head out of the sand and introduces some consistency instead of mimicking Apple by giving the best features to one or two devices while leaving the rest of them in the dark. what good is even updating to Android 4.4.2 if you get *nothing*? well, i won't say that entirely, at least Samsung gave my Note tablet a few cool things to use in the new version, but Google gave it nothing.

Also, i am not anti-dalvik. i am just desiring the OPTION to use something that should be baked into the OS, but Google is all in favor of reducing the functionality of Android into iOS for some lame reason i have yet to grasp at this point. having the option for Dalvik in Dev Options is not a crime. but they sure treat it as if we are all too stupid to have the option available.

In either case Google has pretty much run out of ideas for later versions of Android. even Samsung can out-innovate Google lately. all the later versions after 4.1 look exactly alike. all KitKat has for a trademark is all-white status icons. that's it. it does nothing else unless you own a Nexus 5.

It's textbook Google to only release something to a small audience while it's in a beta stage. There is nothing that demonstrates this better than Google Glass. It's a product that wasn't available to the general public for well over a year because it wasn't ready for prime time and still really isn't based on my usage since the battery life is not long enough.

Releasing ART into the Nexus 5 was much the same. They only released it to a small group while it's in beta. Whether an OEM like Samsung, HTC, Motorola or LG chooses to include it in their devices is complete up to them and Google plays no part in that. Once they feel it's ready for prime time, which seems to be soon if the rumors about the next revision hold true, it will be available to the general public who are on that version. Whether a device gets the update to it is another story and is of course the age old tale of Android. The 1st generation Nexus 7, Nexus 4, and Nexus 10 might not get this update, or they might. There will be multiple factors including Google's promised 18 months of support or the chipset manufacturer choosing to continue to work on it.

As for the transparent nav bars, the actual function is something controlled by the launcher rather than the OS itself. It was initially only on the Nexus 5's Google Now launcher because it was still in a beta phase and has since been published to the Play Store so that other devices can use it. Once again demonstrating Google's tendency of limited roll out and then general roll out. Their OTA's function the same way, only going out to 1% to test the waters and then becomes a general roll out once it's deemed good enough for prime time.

But as always, Google gives way for those who truly want something to get it without waiting. They opened Google Glass to everyone at the high price to allow those who truly want it the ability to get it, while discouraging the casual person. Nexus devices have unlockable bootloader so that you or a developer can make their own rom to include ART, and they give adb sideload and the factory images so that you can install the OTA as soon as you're ready. Whether one decides to take advantage of this comes down to the user.

as far as i am aware, there is zero way to get a Nexus 10 to get transparent nav bars unless you root. and to me that's a lousy workaround when Google can easily enable it themselves. the Nexus 7 has it, the Samsung devices have had it since 4.1.2 but Google as usual makes a stupid excuse 'performance issues'. i mean really? expect us to believe that? especially given the Nexus 10 is their most powerful tablet, which makes the inclusion in the Nexus 7, a lesser device odd since i would expect performance issues on it before the 10.

i got off the Apple wagon when iOS 7 came out, and went with Samsung. and i'm happy with that seeing as Samsung has not only outclassed Apple at every turn, but also outclasses Google as well. Google treats us all like we're too stupid to have options so they dumb down all their apps and make excuses only stupid people would believe. they also add in pointless gimmicks to their apps as well (swipe away a youtube video to completely dismiss it, a useless gimmick when backing out was more efficient)

Still want the choice to use ART without root though. as for Google apps, i hardly use them. they look like utter crap and are half as functional as Samsung offerings. does anyone know whether an alternative exists though for YouTube? i hate that stupid swipe thing. when i want to leave a video i hit 'back'. i don't want it reduced. nor do i want a swipe mark on my screen.

unlocking the bootloader requires a data wipe. and not everyone is blessed with super fast internet via DSL or cable just yet. this is why i refuse to get into this 'cloud' mess. my internet is essentially my 4G LTE hotspot. i have 20GB of data. the amount of apps, music, videos, and games that would need to be reinstalled after such a wipe would kill my data plan. but since Google refuses to even give a darn about their own Nexus line (they killed the Nexus Q with its superior amp for the much more inferior ChromeCast that does the exact same thing) i just shelved all my Nexus tablets and use Samsung replacements.
