Help Android System raping battery :( ...reset phone?

tuscan440

Newbie
Hi

I have followed various tips and tricks to minimise my battery consumption, including turning 'background data off' and having 'usb debugging' on, wif-fi off etc. I have very few apps and widgets now but recently my battery usage too a nose dive and according to Android System Info only two things are using the resources, but they are both making my processor usage 99-100% all of the time and my battery life about 8 hours tops with minimal usage. These are:

  • Android System 70-75%
  • HTC.sense:remote 15%
  • Android System Info the remianing % (understandably)
NOTE: none of my apps or widgets are using processor resources so i know that Froyo is doing its job well in closing unused app/widgets.

The main problem i have is that the battery usage option in settings shows the Android System as using about 70% of the battery, where as until a couple of weeks back it was and always has been the screen that was the biggest user by far....so what has changed??!!

I need to know:

~ Is there anyway i can find out which actual android system process(es) is hogging my cpu so i can stop it?
~ If not would a factory reset or 2.3 update (soon) solve this issue?
~ If i do reset are these back up apps any good as I have a few paid apps that i dont want to lose.

Any help appreciated. Thanks in advance

a new record for me today with just 5.5 hours battery life. one text and one 5 minute phone call and its died. its getting worse!

having the same problem. ive never expected these phones batteries to last that long due to the power of them but for the pst for weeks mines got really bad.

checked out the battery usage and the phone idle is using a lot of power - almost as much as display.

any ideas as to how i can reduce to power consumption when the phone is not being used.... perhaps removing apps that prevent the phone from sleeping would be a good start?

cheers

Hard reset worked for me. Seems like i can't kill the battery in a day now if i try.

so did you manage to get your apps back ok?? i have a few like n64oid, smsgo, viginette but im have read a few posts of people restoring original settings and then having problems re-installing apps.

did you use any back up app that stores them on the SD card?

No i just did the reset and when i set up my google account for the market it automatically downloaded all the apps i had before. I did lose all my save files for my games so i had to start some games over again. I saved my pics to my computer and formatted the sd card as well just to make sure there wasn't anthing hiding in the sd card and then i copied my pics back to the sd card. Battery life has been great since then.

I am 19hrs 16mins unplugged and i have 15 phone calls(not long ones), 20 text messages, 1/2 hour of surfing and 2 hours of angry birds and i have 32% battery left.

Well N64oid isn't in the market right now (it's been taken down temporarily), so you'd certainly need to backup that .apk.

good shout, i hear it isn't coming back until it is ready but mario 64 plays like a dream, even with cpu at 100% which is odd...

cheers landovr looks like a factory reset is on the cards. i hate having to plan my day around a god damn phone that wont hold charge!

did a factory reset today and had backed up most things with various backup apps on the market. Turned out to be a total waste of time because all but 3 apps (and i had over 60) were backup on the device already. My guess is through the google account.

The only thing i had to backup were the images, videos and music files on my sdcard because i also did a format.

One thing i did notice is that when i signed back into google on my DHD and retrieved all the apps back I had a text message from them saying im close to my data limit!

Christ knows how much data was used to get the apps back I just wish i had done it through wifi.

hoping this makes a difference to the battery now!

The 75% Android system is weird to me because my android system is usually around 3-4%

Has it made a difference at all?? and do your contacts get backed up as it no longer saves to sim on smartphones does it?

Randomly (of course) my phone today has been much better in terms of battery usage, i looked at where it was being used in the settings and now android system has slipped back down below phone calls and display at around 23%. However the cpu on android info is still at 99-100% and lists android system at 75% so i just dont get it (im longing for your 3-4% android system usage!). thinking now it could be android system info giving false readings i have checked with cpunotify and that still says 100% cpu usage all the time

so my battery which is all of a sudden lasting twice as long is down to ????..... the only thing i have done is force stop the facebook app yesterday as it was unable to retrieve info so maybe this had an effect but then maybe it is a coincidence. the mystery continues!

PS a re-install will definitely be on the cards if it makes a lasting difference but im hoping 2.3 will spring upon us any day now and sort this out instead :D

I did my reset 20 days ago and my battery life is still good, i honestly wouldn't expect anything better. When i did my reset all my contacts were automatically put back on my phone along with text messages it even went back to the wallpaper i was using. I cant say all dhd's will do the same thing as mine. Before i did my reset i exported all my contacts to the sd card and then put the file on my pc just to be safe and i also wrote out by hand all my contacts and numbers which took forever but its nice to know i have them if the worst case happens and i lose everything.

What happens to your contacts depends on how you've saved them. They can be SIM, Phone or Google, or a mixture of all three.

The phone ones are the only ones that you'll need to backup. Login to gmail.com and check your contact book there if you want to be sure they're Google contacts.

ah ok nice to see there is more than one way to back them up. a couple of months ago i had to manually update my gf's HTC hero to 2.2 from 1.6 and although i thought they were saved to the sim they weren't.....and she didnt have her gmail synced so we lost all of them......... woops! needless to say i wasn't in her goodbooks that day ha ha!

Hi Guys,

I am using HTC wild fire and batery usage is very high. plea have a look
call standby--45%
phone idle----47%
android system--6%
Display--2%

Please halp me to increase my battery Usage.

Well since I did my reset (which by the way, all contacts were backed up through my google account) I have been using the phone heavily for 2 and a half days and have 20% remaining! One massive thing to note is that I have had to turn my mobile network completely off and use only wifi (about 5 hours a day). Reason is because the reset was foolishly done when I wasn't in a wifi network and used approx 100MB of data to restore all my apps! I have 4 mb left till my limit. talk about cutting it fine.

Anyway I think the mobile network being off does impact the battery a lot, so will comment here in 2 days when I turn it back on again.

As for the android system info the only thing i can think of is constant syncing or a task killler. Could try turning mobile data and wifi off and see if its drops to the norm otherwise it must be app related.

Let us know if you find out!

ouch, hefty, i will definitely do it on wi-fi!....so do you mean you switch to aeroplane mode or something or do you just flick off 3g? im going to donwload a 2g/3g switch upon a reinstall

Lokeshmar how is your screen usage at 2%??? and how bad is your battery? looks you haven't turned your screen on at all to figures like that!

On a side note now when i notice that android system is hogging the battery i force stop the facrbook app and then restart, upon restart the display is then the biggest user by far. the other day when i my phone was dying in mere hours a restart did not help at all so im wondering if facebook does have anythign to do with it. maybe its just coincidence as the behaviour of the phone is hardly predictable! the resaon im going on about htis is because i dont want to be in the same situation only a couple of weeks after a re-install.

any one know when 2.3 is out? I heard it was this month but nothing has appeared as of yet.

Task killers are bad for your battery, as well as performance. I would definitely recommend turning it off rhod.

you could use aeroplane mode as it will work but then you won't be able to use the phone for calls or texts. However, if you go to settings, wireless & networks then untick mobile network this disconnects g/3g/h data. i have added this shortcut setting as an on/off switch to my screen. I also have the 2g/3g switch which speeds the process up loads.

Do you mean turning off task killer? I don't use a task killer. Never have as don't think they perform well with the androidOS.

Oh, right sorry I took your previous post where you mentioned a task killer out of context.

Sorry :p

yeh i guessed aeroplane mode would do that. if 3g really makes that much of a difference then i'll have the 2g/3g switch there to turn it off when i know i need to save battery. but hopefully when my phone is back to how it was before and i can get enough battery to last me from waking up to going to bed then i will be happy. There will be few occasions when i wont be able to stick my phone on charge overnight or top up in my car.

i think it makes a huge difference. If you know you are in an area which has 3G or H guaranteed then just leave it on 3G. If you are like me and live and work in an area with temperamental 3G signal and have the setting on gsm/wcdma auto then the phone is constantly searched for the strongest signal and this rinses the battery.

my 3g is great at home but at work it onyl works outside, so that could explian some fo the battery but then again it was 'normal' a few weeks back so after are-install it will be one of the things i will try.

Cheers!

When i am home i leave my wifi on all the time but when i am out and about i only turn my mobile network on when i need it, usually for about 5 minutes and then shut it back off.

Hi Guys, give this a try, original source is XDA developers, The Desire Hd in the only android phone so far which i have come across which does not have This enabled by default.

If you find your HTC Desire running slow, laggy, or a bit sluggish, then it's most likely related to the /init issue as identified on the XDA forums. The /init process kicks in and consumes around 80-90% of the CPU constantly making it laggy to swipe, gallery very slow and jerky for most actions. This is easy to identify by running a process manager like Watchtower which will reveal this. Restarting the phone resolves this for a few hours or maybe even a day.

On your phone go to..
Menu/settings/applications/development/now turn on Usb debugging..

After doing this, wait aprox 10 secs, and your phone should be much more responsive.
You should also get a longer batt life and this should stop android sys in its tracks and put everything back to normal.

Any Feedback would be great. Thanks
