Help Android System Update

I recently moved back to Android after a few years over on the dark side. I picked up a Nexus 6p and rooted it right away. All was great until yesterday when the device downloaded an android system update. Am I right in thinking I cannot apply this update while being rooted?

If I can't update that's fine, but how do I dismiss this update and block future system updates? I'm scared to reboot my phone at the moment in case it tries to apply the downloaded update. Any help or advice would be much appreciated guys!

A Nexus will NOT take an OTA update if you are rooted--you have to have stock recovery and /system has to be completely stock (no root apps, no altered hosts file, etc.).

Then is it possible that he isn't rooted, because I have never heard of a phone actually downloading an update at all while rooted... I personally thought Nexus devices came pre-rooted... Live and learn, I suppose...lol

Nexuses (Nexi?) don't come pre-rooted but are easier than many to root since they are meant for developers. Any phone, rooted or not, will download an OTA update if it's running its stock ROM; since Lollipop, though, you have to be completely stock in order to apply an OTA update. (My rooted ZTE ZMAX and LG G Stylo both downloaded updates but I had to flash back to stock to apply them, then reroot.)

Mine won't update with stock unless I unroot. I've tried many times. It won't even check. It just says "The system has been modified, blah, blah, blah"... And there are definitely updates available and the newest is still KitKat... I even flashed my stock recovery and tried, but I can't unroot because I was dumb (actually desperate) and rooted with Kingroot. And SuperSu-Me won't work. Nor will flashing a supersu zip. But I just need to access a pc and use Odin and all will be well.

And Nexi sounds good to me...lol

Thanks for the replies. I rooted the phone but it's still on the stock ROM. I basically just rooted so that I could alter the system font so I have a few root only apps installed. I've included a screenshot of the notification I'm getting, is there any way to get rid of that and stop the phone auto downloading system updates in the future?

It will download and notify you of the update but if you try to update it most likely will not let you. I personally wouldn't even try it just in case.

@VizualProphet I personally have been using Wugfresh's Nexus Root Toolkit for my updates. I use the flash stock option with no wipe mode enabled. This will update you without wiping any data or settings. Then after it's complete I use the root option to install the latest TWRP and re-root.

It's by far the simplest method to take the updates without worrying about which version of SuperSU to grab.

I find it to be a pain to dismiss the notification without also affecting other notifications so I just simply update.

You can still update your phone while rooted, you just can't take an OTA update. It's required to manually flash the partitions in which the root toolkit automates the process for you.

Most stock, rooted devices, will download, but NOT be able to install an OTA--this, of course, includes the Nexus line.

A custom ROM (which is typically rooted) has those (OTA) download/nag mechanisms disabled.

Not actually sure what the proper component would be to disable an OTA download/notification for a rooted Nexus...

The "thing" nowadays (fairly recently) is to use the systemless root that does not touch or otherwise modify the /system partition as there are downsides to touching it (even just temporarily making it r/w will be noticeable by the system and cause a flag to be set indicating that the /system partition has been modified).

Chainfire's got a really cool app called FlashFire that will do some crazy cool things w/regard to flashing / installing an OTA on an otherwise stock, rooted device.

I've not used it yet, but have read about it with great interest. See this thread for some info on how it is being used on a N6P running the developer preview:

Cheers!

My phone also gets an update notification. Im rooted and using a custom recovery.

To get rid of it temporarily(i think it will download again if you go under: settings/about phone/software updates) but idk... Anyways every time that it begins to download I go to: settings/apps/ and under the "all" section I search for" "updater" and click on "clear data" that way the notification goes away and the downloaded update is deleted. after that I force stop it.

Sorry for the late reply. I really appreciate all this great advice but just looking for some clarification before proceeding. I've downloaded Wugfresh's Toolkit and put my details in. I'm now at the following screen...

Do I literally just need to click "Flash stock + unroot" then apply the update that has downloaded on my phone, re-connect it to the computer and click the "Root" button? I don't see anything for the no wipe mode. I don't want to lose everything on my phone. Also when re-rooting would I tick to flash custom recovery?

@VizualProphet

You won't ever install the update that downloaded to your phone. When you select the flash stock/unroot option the is a no wipe mode option you need to check on a subsequent screen. You will choose the factory image you want to flash through the toolkit (MOB30M) and it will download it. Everything is automated.

After the whole process is complete and your phone is fully booted again, you will use the root option and check the option to install recovery.

The only way to update always makes you lose root. Because flashing a new system image, that system image doesn't contain the root binaries.

Excellent thanks I'll do that now. Do you by any chance know how I delete the update file that is sitting in my notifications just now? I saw IsaacGuti's response but there is no Updater app on the Nexus 6P. The notification is really annoying and there's no option to swipe to clear.

It will go away after you update and it won't download again because you'll already be on that version.

And oops. For some reason I thought you were using a nexus 6 so the version I posted is wrong. For the 6p you will be installing MTC19V.

The toolkit should only offer you images for your device anyway, but I figured I should clear that up.
