Android Task Manager

ronyzmbow

Newbie
I have Samsung Galaxy S WiFi 5.0 which run on Android OS, v2.2 (Froyo). in order to shut down open applications there is a dedicated button that shuts down open application. My young grandson owns a newer tablet that runs on Android 4,1. On his tablet there is no button like this. How do you activate the Task Manager when there is no such dedicated button?

Welcome, ronyzmbow!

Which tablet does he have? Our tablet forums are listed here, Android Tablets & MIDs - Android Forums Maybe you can find help and info in there?

I am not a tablet guy, but I would think that if he has that function it should show up in his app drawer, wherever you go on the tablet to see what apps you have.

If that didn't help, just check back here or ask again. Someone will chip in.

As Crashdamage stated, don't worry about closing apps, Android takes of this for you.

* Android is hard coded to automatically kill a task when more memory is needed.
* Android is hard coded to automatically kill a task when it’s done doing what it needs to do.
* Android is hard coded to automatically kill a task when you haven’t returned to it in a long time.
* Most services (while possibly running in the background) use very little memory when not actively doing something.
* A content provider is only doing something when there is a notification for it to give. Otherwise it uses very little memory.
* Killing a process when it isn’t ready only causes it to have to reload itself and start from scratch when it’s needed again.
* Because a task is likely running in the background for a reason, killing it will only cause it to re-spawn as soon as the activity that was using it looks for it again. And it will just have to start over again.
* Killing certain processes can have undesirable side effects. Not receiving text messages, alarms not going off, and force closes just to name a few.
* The only true way to prevent something from running at all on your phone would be to uninstall the .apk.
* Most applications will exit themselves if you get out of it by hitting “back” until it closes rather than hitting the “home” button. But even with hitting home, Android will eventually kill it once it’s been in the background for a while.

I wrote an article related to this, it can be viewed here: http://androidforums.com/android-applications/335110-why-you-dont-need-task-killer.html

Having said that, i remember HAVING to kill processes on a cheap phone running Froyo.
Management is so much better now though so a modern tablet runnin ICS really doesnt need help
