Help Android update, independant of carrier/region

Confusion over android updates. Apologies if I have missed an existing post address this but I haven't found anything.

I have two devices - Galaxy nexus I9250 and Galaxy tab 2 p5110.
They are running 4.1.2 and 4.0.4 respectively.

I am in New Zealand and trying to update them. Nothing available via kies (for tab) and not up-datable via normal device check.

I don't want to root if possible. I'm aware there are the region/carrier locks, although the nexus is sim unlocked (not sure if updates are rolled out by google/samsung or the original carrier)

I have tried using a different (UK) sim card and tried using international DNS servers.

I also tried the clearing Google framework services cache option.

Why am I held back from updating due to region/carrier or whatever other annoying slow-non-open-source-natured-behaviour (ignorance is bliss).

All that said, I have seen several conflicting forum threads relating to the nexus updates hogging battery so perhaps I should leave well alone!

I don't own a Galaxay Nexus but I did find a pretty good guide to updating it manually from Team Android Update Galaxy Nexus I9250 to Android 4.2.2 JDQ39 OTA Official Firmware [How To] - Tutorial / Guide. The only issue I can see is that your supposed to already have Android 4.2.1 on you Galaxy Nexus for this to work. Team Android also have a guide for that Update Galaxy Nexus I9250 to Android 4.2.1 JOP40D OTA Official Firmware [How To] - Tutorial / Guide. How far are you going to update your device muncedog?

Thanks for your help - I have had a quick look at those links, I wonder if it really is compulsory to have that version, surely ROM files are complete, not just upgrade patches?

Also, as for the galaxy tab, any ideas? That's the one that is suffering, although that may be mostly due to samsung bloatware!

When I updated my Galaxy S2 with Kies to Jellybean, Kies checked which version I was running before it started the Jellybean update. I pretty sure having the proper OS before the update is mandatory using that method which is the only non-root method I know.

There's a post in a thread over in the Samsung Galaxy Tab 2 10.1 - Android Forums by Daviduk that says the update for the p5110 came out in December. You'll have better luck getting answers about that device over there.

As for your nexus, it depends on which version of the firmware you have. There are several varieties. There are the Sprint (US) and Verizon (US) CDMA/LTE version. You have one of the GSM versions....they all have some variety of the takju / yakju / yakjux / yakjuw or something similar. There are two "google" builds....the yakju and takju varieties. One is US and one is the international firmware builds which are updated directly by google as soon as the latest OS is released. The others reflect the different firmware builds which are country / carrier dependent. To determine which build you have you can go into maps>settings>about and see what it lists as "Device".

As you are outside the US, if you have anything other than yakju, your phone will only update when your regional carrier pushes it, or in some cases Samsung may push it. If you want guaranteed immediate updates you have to flash the yakju firmware. There are directions out there to flash the update.

Yes, the only way you're going to get updated to 4.2.2 is if you wait for your carrier to push out the update, or unlock the bootloader and then proceed to flash the Yakju factory image. Rooting is not necessary, but unlocking is required to flashing anything through fastboot. It's not too bad, because Wugs Nexus Toolkit (if you have Windows) will make it pretty painless. The only downside to doing so is that unlocking and flashing a factory image wipe the phone clean as a safety precaution. One extra benefit towards flashing the factory image is that as soon as Google updates android, you will get the update that day or within a day or two depending on how quick the roll out it.

The choice is ultimately yours.

Thanks for your help on this. It is gsm jz054k. I guess the frustration is that updates are released for Gsm ages ago in other countries. I was hoping I could change/trick the country code. I will shortly be in the UK. perhaps it quill update. Also , is it carrier or country as another sim (unlocked) or international DNS didn't work! guessing original carrier is coded into firmware ?
