Root Annoying System Update

I rooted my phone with Shabbypenguin's one-click instructions. After that I did not install any custom ROM but I installed a lot of apps. Is it still unsafe to accept the update? Is there a way to get the update without removing my data and apps?

There is really nothing safe about the update right now . I've lost count of the phones that it's bricked . Install at your own risk . You could always go to the Odin thread and install the rooted version with CWM .

at the very least im sure accepting the update will break root if not possibly worse...use Koumas FA19 image..rooted with CWM..if your mind set on updating....like biker ive heard a few bad instances..but i myself am running the update with no problems (yett)...but im not sure id accept the ota

Thank you, I've been referred to Odin before, but since the thread says "this will wipe all your data" I haven't tried it. Does that apply for "installing the rooted version with CWM"?

using Odin to flash the FA19 Update with root and cwm...will erase all your data..But you can backup with Titanium Backup to save your self some time..i usally just do fresh installs of apps to save myself the trouble of something weird going on...also make a backup with CWM first and if you dont like how things work out for you with FA19..just restore your backup

You will lose everything except what you have saved on your card .
Like Johnny said, use Titanium to back your apps up and make sure that your contacts are synced with gmail. I too would copy all contents to your computer.

In the past I've done Titanium and CWM restores but I have started installing everything from scratch now . This does away with the conflicts I have experience in the past

I am rooted with the one click and kept the stock from but have added wifitether and such. Everything worked just fine but rendom reboot which while annoying wasn't a big deal. Now boost wants me to do a system update and i don't want to break my root or brick my phone by applying the update. The update screen pops up all the time, how can I disable this? I don't have access to a computer to flash a new rom or anything. What is the best way to disable the system update notification? I'm seriously considering dumping boostmobile because net10 now offers bring your own phone with unlimited everything, and they claim you can do whatever you want to the phone as long as it is not a net10 branded phone. I would like to keep boost because my shrinkage is down to $40 per month but the net10 isn't much more.

Please help.

That's it. Just install Autostarts. Open it, select AFTER STARTUP., then select GOOGLE SERVICE FRAMEWORK (there should be 4of them) then:D select the one that has the word UPDATE In the name. It was the third 1 down on my phone . Just disabled. It.

Other than that, I can't find any way to do anything to your phone without a computer. :( If you can get access to one, it doesn't take long to Odin a clockworkmod-enabled rom to the phone, then you can install other things later without a computer.

Autostarts is the ticket if you don't want the update . I'm using it right now and I haven't even SEEN the update notification yet on CM7 or CTMod 3.1.2 . :D

Problem with the computer thing is I have no idea how to use windows, I have only used Ubuntu, which is why I went with the one click root because they had a Linux version and that was the only way I could root my phone at all. Thanks for the autostarts idea, I will probably be giving this a try. Can't wait for Ubuntu to make the android app, this looks very promising for a way for tablet users to fix their crappy prevails lol.

I don't know about everyone else... but I finally got my phone up to FA19 and rooted. Now, I get ANOTHER update pushed to my phone. What the crap?

EDIT: It's actually an update to fix bugs in FA19 -- I don't know if I'll need to re-root if I update this...

Yeah.. But what exactly do you disable for us noobs out there? :)

Look up ^^^ at the post right before the post you quoted

Forgive my ignorance, but how does someone with the technical know-how to operate Ubuntu not know how to use windows? I tried using Linux before and
failed.

Personally, I am going to wait for something better.. seems like the people who have updated their phone to this newer version are having some lousy signals with 3g. Why would I want that?! :D

Anyways, hope it works out for you that are remaining on stock rooted/unrooted. Myself, I will just wait for Bloodawn and Kouma to do their thing.

Boost sent out a bug fix update for FA19 that fixes those problems this morning.

I got a notification for the bug fix update this morning, so I came here to learn about it. I had no idea there was a separate update that was bricking phones.

So tell me, if I apply the bug fix update over top of the last stock update (gingerbread), what are the risks besides requiring a re-root?

That's what I'm trying to figure out still. I accidentally installed a zip that Bloodawn made for CTMod that removes the system updates from alerting. So now I can't even get the update anymore if I wanted to.

The one time I install something without backing up prior to it... sigh.

I have a "rooted" Samsung Galaxy Prevail model SPH-M820-BST from Boost Mobile, Android 2.3.5 (build Gingerbread.ej06), Linux kernel 2.6.35.7. System update pop-ups started bugging me yesterday. No updates for me unless I want to loose "root" access---or worse!

Downloaded "autostarts" for $1.03 from the Android Marketplace and used the above instructions to disable the source of the system update "nag". You will need a "rooted" phone for this fix too work. The third "Google Services Framework" entry in the "autostarts" app "After Startup" menu was named "com.google.android.gsf.update.SystemUpdateServiceSReceiver". Disabled that one and my problem was solved!

Best $1.03 I've spent in a long time!
