Another Gingerbread thread

I know I might be beating a dead horse bringing up Gingerbread on the Prevail but I came across something on pdadb that seems strange to me. There is a new phone from LG coming to Virgin Mobile. It's the LS700 and it's being released with 2.3.4. When I did a side by side comparison of the Prevail and the LS700, they both have the same processor, clock speed, cpu core etc. Why is it that the LS700 can run gingerbread but the Prevail can't?

Because samsung is to lazy to give us an update. We could run ICS if someone were to release it for the prevail (well..... probably) But gingerbread is for sure if only the almighty Samsung says "Let There Be Gingerbread", otherwise its up to someone to hack us up a version.

What is ICS? And, if I was able to get ahold of an LS700, would it be possible to do a full dump of the phone and extract the OS and install it on the Prevail somehow?

is there anyone that could do it? maybe from this forum or another forum. im not good at this and i dont know anyting about how to do all this stuff. but maybe you can make a new thread and everyone that wants to can help each other there. maybe we can get people from other forums to help aswell.maybe aske the CM team to help work on it and other devs.

I have a friend that works for Sprint's tech support and is the best Linux programmer I know. If anyone could say for sure if this is even remotely possible be done, he's the one. I'll talk to him and see what he thinks and post back his response.

you see there we have some big help. anyone else know somebody that can help?

the lg will have different drivers and versions, namely lg specific items I would not use that.
However if anyone follows metropcs phones they should notice the admire just came out.
It is a samsung phone with very close spec's to this phone and its running gingerbread.

i emailed samsung support because of the cheap reception i have and they told me to do a soft reset. but i also asked them if there will be a gingerbread update for the prevail and they told me this:
"About the Gingerbread update, we are unable to speculate when/if a software revision with this feature might be available due to the fact that this might lead to inaccurate information and confusion.

Should this be available, it will be posted in our website or you will be informed by your service provider. Please feel free to check with us periodically for updates.

Thank you for your understanding and patience."

i hope they are working on it.

My friend said that in concept, it would work. But, even though the hardware is similar, the way the software is written for the LG would make it incompatible with the Prevail like what Optimus had said. He said that the time it would take to make it compatible wouldn't make it feasible to attempt because if the programming was off by even one line, it could brick the phone.

I just wrote Samsung today regarding this issue . :p

Edit:
Not that it'll help but at least I've done my part .

I would love to have gingerbread on my pervail but I think we all would do better getting a community together with Shabby and Hroark to get a true modded Kernel that works for the prevail... Then we can work on getting modded ROMS approved by XDA and put in the CM repositories so we could just install right from ROM Manager. I think that is the only way we will ever get gingerbread on our pervails. The reason Im saying this is because, while the prevail is a great little phone, it is an android designed to a prepaid service and is already being followed by a phone that is more hardware capible. There is just not that much market for it compared to other phones on the big networks. You can bet that Samsung didnt spend much time or resources (money) on this phone and I doubt that they really plan on any future updates except to address issues with the current system. If we want true custom ROMs or 2.3 on our no contract/ $50.00 a month plans an screw corprate america, then we NEED some linux Devs to help get us a modded kernel..... SO, talk to anyone you may know that knows alot about linux kernels, ask them to join our community so that we may converse and get some real development going on our prevails. Shabby and Hroark, I know, have been waiting for some help from our community to do this for months now. So lets put our heads togeather and see what we can do

This was Samsung's response to whether or not the Prevail will get Gingerbread :

Dear Keith,

Thank you for your inquiry.

Apparently, we are unable to speculate when/if a software revision with this feature might be available due to the fact that
this might lead to inaccurate information and confusion.

Please feel free to check back with us periodically for updates.
