Root Another new rooter here, apps to freeze?

Android Expert
Wow much easier than rooting my OG droid way back when.

I am basically freezing apps right now to see how the phone responds and will delete them if there are no bugs.

On my runnng services I still have:

EXTDispSERvice

CacheService

AuthenticationService

Global Unplug

Google Messaging

Sync ServiceAlarm Service

Data Manager service

Which if any of these can I disable without harming the normal operating of the phone? I am interested the cacheservice and the global unplug in particular. I just want to stop as many needless apps that seem to be runnning all the time

I have frozen these thus far:

-Amazon
-Adroid Live Wallpapers
-Blockbuster
-City ID
-DNLA (what does this do?)
-DinaSystem service (what does this do?)
-FMradio
-Kindle
-Live Wallpaper picker
-Madden NFL
-Magic smoke wallpapers
-My verizon mobile
-News
-News and weather
-Skype
-Social messaging (will freezing the "social" apps affect anything?)
-Social messaging services
-Social networking sharing
-Social status
-VZ navigator (just an add on right? Has nothing to do with Google Nav?)
-Weather

Thanks for your patience for this newbie to the X.

i'm not sure about what apps you can freeze, but i do know that you may want to hold off on deleting some of them because you can have trouble getting any future updates that may come out. and freezing them essentially does the same thing. i highly recommend just installing a new rom that already has extra process taken out. i'm on Rubix focused which has given me the best battery life, but apex 1.4 and liberty 1.5 are also great options.

You'll probably find THIS thread helpful. I would just rename the .apk files to .bak rather than delete them. As dmiller said, you can not get any OTA updates with certain apps renamed or deleted but most people with a rooted X don't want the OTA right off since there is a chance that any new OTA may not be able to be rooted.

Thanks, I am waiting on a larger sd card to install a custom rom. I looked at the list Airmaxx referenced and am going by that and some of the other threads. Freezing them does not hurt for now. With my OG droid I got a notification to update and had to install it manually...is that generally the case with the X? If so I will rename the ones I decide to uninstall as mentioned. I have a stock backup so if I decide I want to get an update I can. I was mainly concerned with the apps I had highlighted as I do not know what they do and what, if any situations will arise if I freeze them...taking it one step at a time.

The X can receive the updates automatically, I believe. I'm not sure I ever have though so I'm not sure lol I have had it since launch and I've always been on a leaked update or custom rom.

Got the sd card, time to starta rommin'. The clearance phones they are selling now come with a 2gb card. Enough for about 1 backup...grrrrrr

Yeah 2 would go way too fast. I think you'll be pleased with the few (but solid) dx roms available. They show big improvements over stock for most people.

Your "id" says "stock", any rom recommendations? I ran at least 20-30 differnent ones over the life of my OG drod? :)

Way to call me out. Lol nah that's pretty outdated. I'm currently running rubix focused. Its a streamlined rom optimized for performance and battery life. Apex and liberty are both great options as well. Liberty is the most customizable rom available and apex is a stable aosp type rom with some nice customization options as well. I suggest trying each. Maybe experiment with some themes also.

Global Unplug

I can tell you how to stop Global Unplug...but you have to do this every time your phone reboots.
Use "Task Killer ProMax" (free app). Find Global Unplug, and select it. When the detail screen
comes up, Force Close it. If you just kill it, it will restart. If you Force Close it, it dies.

I can't root my phone, so that's how I kill this useless and, frankly, stupid, app. People who are
truly concerned about that $0.01 (1 cent) that they MIGHT save over a year or so, may like
this app. And for those folks, remember to always unplug your TV, stereo components, all
clocks that run off of AC, microwaves, coffee pots with timers, etc., when they aren't actively
being used... For anything with a remote, you need to turn it off, too---it has a sensor that
receives the remote's signal to turn on....that's taking a microscopic amount of power, too! :-)

I find it annoying, and will kill it as soon as I see it. Sometimes, it won't even go away like it's
supposed to---it just hangs there, blocking part of my screen....
