Root Another ROM and Kernel Question Thread

I have been looking everyone and haven't seen what I have been looking for. I am new to this rooting business and was wondering some simple questions.
For the first one, all of this talk about Kernel. What is it exactly? I do not fully understand what it means and what it is used for.
My other question is, what is the best ROM? now everyone has their opinions and I'm not looking for any fights. But what I'm looking for is a ROM that is fast (the fastest) and also stable.
The ROM I currently have likes to have my phone restart and not actually boot up. It also likes to move slow at times. So I am just looking for a fast stable ROM. Plus some knowledge dropped on me about everything root. :P

Thank you for your guy's time.

Tough questions. Well, kernels are are software between hardware and software. It is what makes the components interact with your rom (kinda).

Now, roms are all opinions. I really like cm7. I just flashed MikG 3.0. Is one better than the other, no. They are different. Apples and oranges really. Cm7 is super snappy, mikg (so far) seems like a great sense rom (I'm not a huge sense fan). So, as you can see from this collection of ill thought-out sentences, each will have their own opinions.

Try out a few and see what you like ;)

For kernels I would start here:
http://androidforums.com/evo-4g-all-things-root/389360-kernels-dummies.html
There's a lot of good info about kernels in there. Essentially a kernel is the go between that tells the hardware what to do when the OS wants to do it. Kernels are really good for increasing your battery, or your performance.

A good rom to try out is MikG found here:
MikG v2.61 - [11/23/2011)

Really depends on what you want to do. If you are doing some setCPU, might as well get a custom kernel (give you more governors). Also some kernels have the HDMI mirror support better than stock (so I hear, I do not use that feature).

Custom kernels are like the icing on the cake - sort of.

so is it better to get a custom kernel? or does it not matter / not much of a difference?

with kernels it will always vary. if your rom that you are on now is giving you decent battery life then you can just keep the kernel that comes with it. if you want to try some kernels then that will be up to you. with custom kernels you can over and underclock your phone which in turn can give you better performance and better battery life.

just keep in mind that the kernel needs to match your rom that you are on. so if you are on an aosp rom then you need to flash an aosp kernel. if you are on a gingerbread sense rom then you need a kernel to match it. same goes for the older froyo roms, you need to flash the froyo kernels.
