Root Anothr noob just custom romed his phone!

I played some awesome music in the background as I followed the step in the thread on this forum involving rooting without computers. But I flashed the aosp mod instead along with gapps. Didn't get it on the first try but after clearing everything(boot,system,etc) I flashed again and it worked! Yay! Now some questions anything.g I should know about aosp tips and tricks? I knowsome stuff doesn't work but refresh my mem gappsory? Thanks! .
 
Grats! Been running aospCM7 for a few weeks now and love it. Camera auto-focus doesn't work (yet) but I'm not losing sleep over it.
 
Glad you got it working! The only things not working are bluetooth, headsets, and the camera works partially (see below)

Go thru the CyanogenMod menu in settings, you'll be amazed what you find. Then, go through each other main setting, and try pressing the menu button in each window, sometimes other goodies popup, there is even a hidden surprise ;)

Check out UOT Kitchen for more customization options, they are amazing!

To fix the camera's autofocus,go into recovery and choose install from sdcard to flash the zip file attached. Your zoom will not work, but it wasn't that great anyway!

I went throughbevery window and pressed menu but I didn't get a popular :(
however I did mess with some settings and now my phone is not as super fast as it was in the beginning. anyway to restore to defaults? best setting changer to increase performance? and also what do you do in uot kitchen, tips, how to use, best tweeks? tanks everybody. and also can I use lanchrr pro because I'm much more accustomed to it and will apps and Widgets still work if I move them to SD card? again thanks :)

Yes you can use launcher pro. For the rest, read, experiment, and always remember to back up first, that way you can always fix something you break.

@jraalablate: try repeatedly tapping on things in the settings about phone menu, 6 is overkill ;-)

nevermind I'm back up to speed. I guess it was just that my battery was low.? what can I use to backup? is there a guide to the settings in the cyanogen mod or is it through experimenting?
 
No guides, just have fun exploring.

The best backup is in recovery you make a backup that quickly and easily can return your phone to it's current state with all apps and settings intact.

For backing up when switching ROMs, use TitaniumBackup or MyBackup, the pro versions have one click restores, the free versions restore one app at a time.

Remember, when restoring apps after switching ROMs, don't restore system apps!
 
JerryScript, I saw what magic you did for sadielynn in another thread, and would love a little help with rooting and going to aospCM7. Your guides are noob friendly and very informative.

Would love to have cyanogenmod7, but that probably wont happen. :(

Edit: My brother has been useless in this as well, he merely told me to get SuperOneClick to root. Not even sure if it's working proper right now.

I have not rooted yet, could not find Gingerbreak or SuperOneClick. (Brother suggested the last one and is not about helping me past that.)

Hi, I'm glad to help. Here's what you need to do:

1) Root your phone with Gingerbreak V1.2 you can find attached to the bottom of the first post in this thread:

A) Make sure you have Settings>>Applications>>Unknown Sources checked

B) Download the gingerbreak apk to your phone and use file manager to find it, click on it to install it

C) Open it and press the root button, it will take a while, and then it will reboot your phone, which will also take longer than usual

D) Once your phone reboots, check in your app drawer for the SuperUser app, click on it to be sure it runs, then press your back button to get out of it

E) In the market, install BusyBox, it's a set of tools that allows rooted files to work their magic.

To test if you are rooted, open terminal emulator (from the market if you don't already have it), and type su, the prompt should change from a $ sign to a # sign indicating you have root (you will probably get a popup from SuperUser asking to give permissions to the terminal). If you see the # sign, type exit and continue, if you still see a $ sign, let me know

2) Flash a custom recovery onto your phone

A) Download the following needed files:
a) Download the xionia recovery from this link:

c) And the gapps zip file from this link:

B) Rename files for easier typing and place on your phone
a) Rename the xionia recovery to xionia_recovery.img for easy typing, and put it on your sdcard, not in any folders
b) Rename the aospCMod ROM zip file to aospCM7.zip, and put it on your sdcard, not in any folders
c) Rename the gapps-gb zip file to gapps.zip, and put it on your sdcard, not in any folders

C) Open terminal emulator and type the following:
su(return)
flash_image_recovery_/sdcard/xionia_recovery.img(return)
reboot_recovery(return)

This will put the xionia recovery system on your phone, then reboot you into it. Once it reboots, you should see a black screen with a white title and blue menu.

3) Backup Your Current Setup (this is a must, and gives you a way back if you have problems)

A) Use the volume keys to go up and down the menus, then press the menu key to select backup and restore

B) Choose backup, it will take 3 to 10 minutes to backup your current system

C) Press the back key to go back to the main menu

4) Wipe and format your phone to prepare for installation

A) Select wipe cache partition, then select Yes - Wipe Cache, then press back key to return to main menu

B) Select advanced, then select Wipe Dalvik Cache, then select Yes - Wipe Dalvik, then press back key to return to main menu

C) Select mounts and storage
a) Select format boot
b) Select format system
c) Select format data
d) Select format cache

D) Press back key to return to main menu

5) Install aospCMod ROM and gapps (btw-gapps is google apps ;) )

A) Select install zip from sdcard

B) Select choose zip from sdcard

C) Select the aospCMod.zip file, and install it (takes 3-5 minutes)

D) Select choose zip from sdcard

E) Select the gapps.zip file, and install it (very quick)

F) Press back key to return to main menu

G) Select reboot system now

It will take longer than usual to reboot your phone, it has to rebuild all the system files, be patient. Once it boots up, skip the sign in screen, then when the system fully loads, click on the Market icon and enter your google account info.
 
Thank you so much for this. I will be all over this like white on rice tomorrow and let you know the results. I do have a question though about 4C. Do I just select them all and then go Back?

Also can you do the red underscores to mark the spaces for when I have to type in the commands? Just so I don't mess them up randomly.
 
@roym6, I'm pretty sure you can use UOT from your phone, I do it on my PC, then download on my phone so I don't have to transfer it.

Edit: you can't do the required uploads from your phone, so you will need a PC for UOT for now


@Naomikins, You format each one, then go back to the main menu. I edited the above with the red underscores in place of the spaces. ;)
 
Question about Gingerbreak APK, Do I need to follow their instructions to install it? Or just follow yours? Nervous about this since they mention USB Debugging Mode.

Also, What kind of file manager?
 
Do turn on usb debugging mode, sorry, I always have that turned on by default ;)

You can use the default file manager, or try ES File Explorer.
 
No, you only need usb plugged in if you download the files on your PC so you can transfer them to your phone. If you downloaded them on your phone, or already have them there, you don't need to be plugged in. Just be sure your battery is charged up.
 
Okay. This is what I see in the Terminal Emulator

export PATH=/data/local/bin:$PATH
$ $su
# exit
$ su
#

Busy box said that I was rooted so~ am I doing this right?
 
Look a few threads down for " Rooting Optimus V without a computer". Follow the instructions for downloading and installing the flash_image file. Then for installing the the xionia cwma recovery. Then you will be ready to flash your new rom. Find one you like and read all the developers instructions before you start. If you are not sure of something, please ask first.
 
Sorry, I keep forgetting that Gingerbreak doesn't install flash_image (it really should ;) )

Download flash_image from here, unzip it and put it on your sdcard (not in a folder), then open terminal emulator and type the following:

su(return)
mount_-o_remount,rw_-t_yaffs2_/dev/block/mtdblock5_/system(return)
cat_/sdcard/flash_image_>_/system/bin/flash_image(return)
chmod_755_/system/bin/flash_image(return)

This will put flash_image onto your phone with the proper permissions. Next
open terminal emulator and type:

su(return)
flash_image_recovery_/sdcard/xionia_recover.img(return)
reboot_recovery(return)

That will put xionia recovery on your phone and boot you into it. From there, follow step 3 on from above.
