antivirus app?

ncpeep

Newbie
I've had my phone for about a month and just wondering if I should have an antivirus app? Is there any particular one most ppl recommend?
Thanks

Lookout's good. I have the free app. It also can locate your phone.

Question is do we really need one?

depends on you. how diligent are you going to be regarding what is installed? there were a few reported bad apps from the market that didn't get pulled soon enough. will you be installing apps from other app stores? what about side loading apps?

although i am uncertain about one aspect, such as infection during internet browsing. i've not heard of any reported issues through this, and not sure if Lookout covers that function. will have to look into that.

personally, i don't mind having to reset my phone if something goes wrong, but i don't want a bot stealing personal and contact information from the phone.

The risk at this point is mainly Trojans.

There have been malware apps in the Android Market. Google has yanked them, but, as it becomes more common, it will be harder for Google to keep up.

That said... I don't run one.

I use avg free version, i feel that is necessary to have some sort of anti virus or something on my phone because i download a lot of apps and stuff and plus our phones are pretty much laptops and wouldnt doubt that people are trying to give us all a virus and steal our private info

i use Lookout, it's free.
I use netquin. i dont know if thats any better but i use it.
i would strongly recommend that you DO NOT USE LOOKOUT... i recently discovered this online about LOOKOUT........ just thought i would mention this.

phonearena.com says this, it was posted on june 17th. 11.

For quite some time now, the Android platform has been a tempting target for hackers, and the companies, which specialize in fighting them, believe that the attacks are not going to cease soon. Speaking of hackers, Lookout Mobile Security has just identified another piece of malware that users should watch out for, and judging by what it can do, it is definitely something that you don't want hiding inside your device.

The malware, which is only known as jSMSHider, can infiltrate rooted devices and handsets running certain custom ROMs. Reportedly, CyanogenMod users should be fine as long as they are running the custom ROM's latest version. It is nice to know that until now, there have been no reports of the malicious code coming along with any apps distributed through the Android Market, so if you have not downloaded anything from any third-party software marketplaces, you should be fine. Once in control of your device, jSMSHider has full access to your text messages and it can also install other apps without you even noticing. Besides that, the malware can communicate with a remote server meaning that data from your smartphone might end up in someone else's possession.

Fortunately, jSMSHider has not been known to have caused any major damage so far, but considering the narrow field of users that it targets, we doubt that it ever will. Nevertheless, its existence goes to show that you should always be careful when downloading software from any unreliable sources.

thanks for all the input, i'm currently still not using one and heard good stuff about lookout but i think i'll just keep without one for now, i'm not downloading alot or anything to start worrying.

ohhhhhhhhh my bad you all!! i read that wrong!! im so sorry.i thought it said lookout was identified as maleware (virus) or whatever. lol im so stupid! i need glasses lmao.

Actually, Lookout DOES cover internet browsing, but only if you get their paid version. Personally, I think they should put the browser protection in the free version, the backup/phone locator in the paid, but that's just me.
