Any converts from the iPhone?

and when it comes to cost, you need to compare the devices on a fair and equal scale.
the ONLY SCALE is to buy it outright on no contract and totally unbranded.

in sweden:
desire - 4500 kr
iphone 16 - 8000 kr

nearly double!! and all you get is a slightly better screen, slightly better software and slightly better camera. and better software is arguable for sure.

not at all worth it in my opinion.

oh yeah, and it has a faulty antenna design. DEFINITELY NOT WORTH IT now!!

IF you want an iPhone then get a bleeding iPhone......Why anyone should feel the need to come on here (An HTC Desire section of the forum) and spout about how much better it is, is beyond me?

A smartphone is a PHONE that can also be used to do other things! It is down to the user to decide what those other things are NOT HTC, Apple or anyone else!

As to the OP, I wouldnt say I converted from, I have had a number of phones over the years. I owned all the iterations of the iPhone but had other makes at the same time, HTC, Nokia, SonyEricsson, a few Sammys to name a few :)

I toyed with getting an iPhone 4 but after testing it for a week I was NOT overly impressed by it. I dont like the design and I dont think it is a vast improvement over the 3gs (but I guess it really depends on what you want out of it).

As to the user reviews, well in most of the user reviews I've seen recently the Desire scores an average 4.5 out of 5 stars whilst the iPhone scores an average of 3 stars out of 5......I think that says it all really!

I swapped my 3gs for the desire. The desire display is great, the build quality is great, web browsing is way better, and much to my delight i can have any message tone i want instead of the 1 half decent tone on the gs, which is ok if you are the only person with an iphone but crap if there are 7 of you all with the same bloody message tone. Iphones are very slick and fast and easy to use and i think the apps on iphone are for the most part a lot better than android, but that will change with time, as for the battery i got 2 days out of my gs and i only get 1 out of my desire, but it lasts until bedtime when i charge it so im not too bothered.

The updating ota is a lot better than using bloody itunes, but its a bit crap that some apps dont work when you update and it sucks that you have to wait so long for the manufacturers and service providers to get there act together.

I think on the whole i prefer my desire, all i miss from iphone are the great games and some apps.

had the iphone 3g..what i realised was that without apps the iphone isnt really anything special.... but i will say it does look great.

the desire is soo much better even compared to the iphone 4 IMO... you can personalise it soo much, i love this. however like all phones there will be a day when i get bored, but i feel now ill be staying with android devices for a while to come. to be honest i love nokias..will be interesting to see what they bring out in the next few years to compete with android and iphone os, because right now their symbian devices are utter s***. they need to step up their game

I went from the 3GS to the Desire and very happy. I looked at the iPhone 4 and the glass scares me. I have worked with glass for 10 years in the ballistic area and it might stop a bullet or RPG but its still glass and one little knock and it breaks so the gorilla glass which is exposed is not for me.
And love that I can customize my phone how I want, not as Apple think it should look.

I've had my Desire for 4 weeks. The first week was so bad I almost returned it (I was getting 4 to 6 hours use between charges). Once I had basically turned everything off (sync, wifi, 3G, widgets, screen brightness) and stopped using the phone as a smartphone (no internet, games, multimedia) and just used it for texts the battery (unsurprisingly) lasted longer.
Despite what you may read here I have first hand experience with the iPhone4. It can last at least 2 full days on one charge with wifi, 3G and regular use (internet, image capture, navigation and more).
Let me be clear: I am not an apple fan boy by any means. I bought the Desire because I absolutely love google. I am fully tapped into the google cloud (and have been for a while) and the ability to integrate my phone was (and is to some extent) absolutely fantastic.
If the Desire could be used at full whack for 2 days without a charge I would ignore the unforgivably poor multimedia capture and have no problem whatsoever keeping it as my primary device. Currently 2 days isn't possible just using the phone to text and nothing else.

For those of us that want (or require) a truly mobile experience the exceptionally poor battery life kills the desire dead in its tracks. Sad but true.:(

1. I think your desire might be dud or your battery is dud. Ill get a full day with everything on and using it as a normal phone with about 30 mins of browsing and a bit of gaming. about 1hr in morning and 1 hr in the evening for music.
it did take a week to sort the battery though.

2. i work for IT in the mobile industry. Im surrounded by iphone4 users, trust me the battery doesnt last a day if you use it like ive described in point 1. what most iphone users dont tell you is that they often have a dock at work or usb cable and are connected to itunes where it is getting a little charge.

i could have had an iphone for the same price as my desire, i get staff offers.
is could have had a galaxy S too but tbh samsung suck since i had the original galaxy

Sprawlsy, I agree with your point that what phone you have should not turn into a Willy waiving competition. The origin of our debate was if you are a business considering development of an app should your priority be iPhone or android. His view was iPhone mine was they should be treated the same.

UPDATE
So, right now I'm looking at my battery status. It says that after 16 hours and 43 minutes I currently have 73% charge (interestingly this is rounded up to 80%). This is after I put a live wallpaper on and switched from dimmest display setting to auto (after reading that these would not affect battery life). Other than this my usage has been the same. It appears that battery life is, at the very least, wildly inconsistent (in my case anyway).

I shall look for a replacement battery this weekend and report back.

iPhone4 purchase now on hold until this is settled.

When you purchase a new battery for the HTC Desire, are you able to put a larger capacity battery in this phone than it's shipped with?

yep..but that battery will be bigger in size and you need to buy an seperate backcover for that..
alternatively you can go for similer power battery and use it as a back up..even in bad case you will find a power outlet before going to sleep..
(worst may be a desert or hill hiking..i believe no one goes for an desert hiking and in some cases you will have your car to charge the phone..)

What is the largest capacity battery you can put in an HTC Desire? and does it go right inside the phone? or on the outside like sort of a case/battery combo?

I've gotten used to charging my phone overnight while I sleep since I had my N95, so as long as the battery lasts until bedtime it's good enough for me, although I do have a charger at work for if it needs topping up. Don't forget that if the battery life really bothers you you can buy a spare for about

It is not that clear cut......IF you want to make some money from the app then it has to be App Store all the way. The way the market is set up at the moment it makes NO sense to cross develop a paid for app and that is something that Google seriously need to look at!

The other thing to note, Android is seen as open source, to a heck of a lot (if not most) people open source means "Free". So trying to charge people for apps is like charging people for air.

To the other posts regarding cost of both phones......You cant include special deals! I got a "Free" Desire on a

Riki, mine is very much the same as your with life. Mine is on 90% atm and thats 5 hours off of charge! Not much use though to be fair, a little surfing and picture takes.

I wonder if its worth getting an external charger that can give the battery a good intense charge every so often to make sure its running 100% good?

ThEGr33k, mines been off charge for 17 hours and my battery is 95% :D

I dont think we need an external charger, form my own findings I am tending to believe that the phone is at fault in the way it deals with the charging of the battery.

What I found was that IF you charge it to 100% (without doing any further charging) the phone syncs to this way of doing it. So you are in effect only ever getting around 70-80% of the battery capacity.

IF you follow my instructions and "force" the phone to charge to 100% you will get nearer the 100% capacity! Plus, another thing I've noticed is by "forcing" the charge the battery will charge to 100% and stay there every time you charge it up!

What I can say with certainty is that it works......There are at least 20 people who can verify that after doing this they are getting much better battery life! Some of them over a day more ;)

I had to plug in yesterday and after using the phone for over 5 hours of calls (most with BT on), a fair number of texts, around 5 hours surfing (both wifi and data), and a few hours gaming (sudoku and chess mostly) the usage stats showed 3 days 17 hours since last charge. I'm not gloating, but almost everyone I know with a Desire gets a similar return......:p

BULL.....SH!T!!!

HTC official figures for the specification of the Desire list talk times of 6.6 continuous hours on one charge. What you are claiming is physically impossible.

Unless there's some misunderstanding in what you've written...although it seems pretty clear to me. Then you are just a liar, plain and simple.

Not on this, or any other, forum they don't.

Or in any review.

Hmm Riki While i think some of your advice there is bang on, those stats are not feasibly possible at all with the amount of usage you are giving.
Indeed i reckon you can get about 48hrs out of a desire with standard use but 3 days???
you have a magic desire

Wow, the level of love on these forums is awesome *shakes head* It was 2 hours of calls NOT 5 (typo on my part which I've corrected now) but the rest is correct.

A magic desire? Well the phone is magic but NOT in the giant beanstalk way :p

But hey I MUST be spouting Bullsh*t and lying, cause I dont have anything better to do than to come on a t'interweb forum and make stuff up

Oh well..........
