Any Droid Incredible converts?

I'm currently using a Droid Incredible with a blown speaker. Its my fourth one, so replacing it again would make me eligible for a phone swap with Verizon, correct?

I love the Incredible, but going through 5 of them in a year is just not acceptable. I could replace the speaker myself, but I just want to weigh my options here. What do you guys love most about your X that the Incredible doesn't offer?

The camera app on the Incredible is faster and better than the X's, but the X offers much better battery life, better performance in apps and games, and a brighter screen that gives better visibility in sunlight. The X also has superior build quality--metal as opposed to the Incredible's plastic.

The external speaker isn't as loud, but I think it sounds a tiny bit better than the Incredible's.

Oh yeah, almost forgot to mention the most important part: the Droid X is better as a phone. Reception is better than the Incredible as well as call quality with its noise cancellation.

Definitely! I lost count on my third or fourth DI replacement and was fed up with it. The fact that this amazing smartphone couldn't act reliably as a *phone* made it a dealbreaker for me. At that time, the DI was very difficult to get a(nother) replacement for and the DX had just come out so for some reason, they had no problem switching me over.

I personally haven't noticed any appreciable difference in the cameras but didn't do any side by side testing so that's just my experience. Biggest difference in the two phones in my opinion is how much thethe manufacturers decided to screw around with Android. The Sense UK makes many more changes in the core of the OS than the Moto Blur apps. This is a crucial difference when trying to run certain apps and other hardware. For instance, I received a BT keyboard before I got my DI because the keyboard was compatible with Android 2+. I literally tried for days to get it to work before finding out that Sense UI wasn't compatible with the BT stack in Android 2+ so HTC simply used the VT from Android 1.6 which didn't support BT keyboards... while selling the DI as fully Android 2.0. I was so disappointed and frustrated. When they let me switch to the DX, I literally had the external keyboard working in under 5 minutes. Don't let the hype over losing Sense worry you. There are some fantastic launcher replacement apps, and a couple of other widgets you'll want and you'll have a fully customizable Sense like experience that I find faster and preferable.

You have to understand that I was one of the folks who lived on the DI forum day and night waiting for its release so I wasn't expecting to want to switch. But I can honestly say that I've never had a flicker of regret or even a moment of missing something that the DI did that the DX won't. I seriously can't imagine not having made the switch and I adore my DX.

Feel free to post or pm me if you have any other questions. Good luck with your decision! And hopefully, welcome to the DX forum for good. ;)

Thanks Vara for the very helpful post. I'm not too concerned with switching from Sense to Motoblur because one of the first apps that I will install on the X (if I can switch) will be LPP. Over been using it since it came out on my Incredible.

So I believe that after a certain amount of replacements you're eligible for a phone switch. Can anyone verify the truth of that statement?

I also went through 4 dInc's and finally told them to send me a DX. Here are the pro's and con's from what I can tell between the two after a month of use:

Pros with the DX
- screen size (huge and I love it)
- battery life (huge difference, I went two days last weekend and have never gotten through a single day with the dInc)
- build quality (can't stress this enough, it feels solid, no more creaking battery covers, dust under screens, etc)
- reception (I can take calls in my brothers basement now where the dInc and original Droid can't, very impressive. Basically, if there is signal, I can make/take a call)
- voice quality (no more washed out sounds and can hear people clearly again)
- Docking station (with the big screen, it is very usable in the car as a navigation system)

Cons with the DX
- screen viewing angle (not a huge deal, but unless you're pretty well straight on, the screen gets very washed out when tilted)
- hands free calling (this is a big one for me. I use bluetooth hands free calling constantly and neither the Voice Commandor or Vlingo hold a candle to the one built into the dInc)
- software (It cost me probably $10 in apps just to recreate the look and feel of Sense. Blur sucks and I liked Sense much better than the stock android look/feel. Still probably not as responsive as Sense, but close enough)
- physical buttons (I know most people would put this as a pro, but pressing the buttons with your thumb on a big screen would be easier if it wasn't a hard button. I also don't ever remember hitting those buttons by accident in 6+ months with the dInc, so I don't understand how so many people think that's an issue)

Overall, I definitely like the Droid X over the dInc, mainly because of the screen size and battery life. If Motorola would build the phones and HTC provide the software, it would be a superphone. The voice commander/vlingo thing is still frustrating as it was PERFECT on the dInc and both of these apps suck (voice commander literally takes 30 seconds to start and vlingo either calls the wrong person or doesn't work when I hit the button).

Good explanation Vara...I feel the exact same way. I also spent too much time in the INC forums and believed it to be the best Android phone out. But, after some time and a ton of issues, I had to finally quit covering for all it's shortcomings. It's still a decent phone, but the X just flat out works better in almost every way. It's reassuring to have a phone that does what you want it to do. I was worried about Sense, but haven't really missed it at all.

Many people told me that I couldn't switch to the X until I had like 5 INC replacements because VZW just couldn't do that. Well, I can tell you it's up to you and talking to the right person. After 1 replacement on my phone and 2 on my wife's, they switched us both to X's. But I had to be persuasive and persistent about switching and talked to 2 supervisors on a couple different occasions. They don't like to do it, but can.

Had the DInc and went to the X, no contest in my opinion.

Everything hardware wise (and yes that includes camera) is better on the X. Camera was very difficult to take good pictures and the shutter lag was unacceptable for fast moving scenes. I love the hard buttons, without the accidental presses. The screen size alone makes is worth having.

Never liked the pentile matrix and low brightness screen of the DInc's AMOLED, although the contrast was supurb. But using it outside was worthless.

But the most important parts are that the Motorola is built like a tank, phone quality is amazing and reliable (something that the DInc severely lacks). Batterly life is outstanding. Even with the extended Seido battery, the DInc's battery life was horrid. Under the same use, the X gets at least twice the battery life, probably more.

Software wise, I did like Sense more than Blur, but LPP beats both, so since you use that, it becomes a non issue.

Only drawbacks to the X are the locked bootloader, but that doesn't affect me too much.

The DInc is not a bad phone. In fact, I'd say it's still probably one of the best phones in Verizon's lineup. But the X is in another league. But it's all matter of opinion, and you should choose based on what factors matter to you most.

I owned a DInc for two months before they allowed me to extend my WFG and change to the DX. They're both great phones. I love the dx's size and screen brightness. It is like the second or third brightest screen in the world, right now.

I like the durablity of the DX. Metal is always better. Period.

Things I don't like: I will never buy a phone with a locked bootloader again. I am a rootaholic. We can only go so far with our rooting vis-a-vis roms and themes. I want more.

Things I loved and miss about the dinc: I miss sense UI. I LOVE sense UI. My next phone will probably have it. :). I love the DInc so much, that I bought my wife and daughter one during Best Buy's Free Fone Sales. They love it.

I can't knock the Dinc. It is one of the greatest phones in the world. The DX is also a great phone. I'd be fine with either.

If you like a brighter screen and durablity? The DX is for you. Otherwise, they are on par with each other. Each phone is a GREAT experience. The problem is that you get used to one and the grass is always greener on the other side. It isn't necessarily greener, trust me. Just a bit different. ;)

Enjoy. Let us know what you choose.

Thanks guys for all the helpful information.

I'm really torn between the two right now. I've been a fan of the Incredible since it was nothing more than leaks and rumors, and even after using it for so long, I still love the phone. I prefer the screen on the Dinc as opposed to the X. The colors seem more vivid and the darks seem darker. The dinc reminds me of a plasma tv, and the X reminds me of an LCD tv.

I also like the pocketable size, although I'm sure I could get used to a bigger keyboard. And the 4" screen seems to be becoming the standard so the size increase is probably inevitable.

But like I said earlier, having 5 replacements of the same phone in 7 months is just not acceptable. I paid $300 for a top end smartphone that breaks like a toy. I want to get what I paid for.

I'm gonna sleep on this for a few more days, but right now I'm leaning toward the X. Everyone I know that has one is completely content with it, which really speaks wonders about Motorola and their build quality. If I do decide to stick with the Dinc, ill almost definitely replace the speaker myself as opposed to replacing the phone. Moving and replacing apps and contacts is really becoming an annoyance.

Get the D-X if you can. I did and I'm not looking back.

I'm used Launcher Pro on both so interface is pretty compatible between the two for me.

Here are the only complaints I have about the D-X.

Had to install Touchdown to get Active Sync working correctly. For some reason the native one on the D-X just doesn't keep up.

Wifi - My D-Inc always connected immediately when I got in range of a Wifi network I had stored. The D-X doesn't. Sometimes I have to toggle Wifi off and then back on to get it to connect. Sometimes it connects without a hitch.

D-Inc was more comfortable in my pocket as it was smaller, but that's a small price to pay for the larger screen size.

One more question, if yall don't mind. Should I go to a store or call the help desk to request the switch? I mentioned it at the store the last time I replaced my Dinc and the guy shot me down immediately. Which would be easier?

convert, but my be getting the thunderbolt in Feb when I'm eligible. + 1 to never getting a phone with a locked bootloader.
+1 to loving the build quality
I also love the battery life on this thing :)

I called in and they replaced the dInc with the DX, but I had to purchase the battery. Since I had an extended battery for the dInc, I just sold that battery to cover the costs, so it was a wash for me. Not sure if that will work for you though, so it might cost $40-50 to get into the DX.

Also, if you have to buy the battery, get the extended. It's only 1mm thicker, but lasts longer and is only a few bucks more.

I loved my dinc. I used it for over a month. Never had any problems with it. I only got it initially because th X was on back order. But when i did get my x i hated the blandness of the colors and the screens. But i used launcher pro on my dinc so i put it on my x and it helped sooo much. Motoblur sux! To address the biggest issue the size. The size is an issue. I have smaller hands so texting was a lil difficult one handed but i use "ultra keyboard" and it's completely customizable. It's even got the compact qwertY that i loved on the dinc. Plus i can adjust the height of the keys so their the same height as the dinc but spaced out. Everything else on the x i love. The screen size is amazing when using it for web searching, games, and movies.
But if your going to trade it in try to talk to a woman at the store vs a man. They usually seem nicer and more willing to help.

But if your upgrading WAIT!!! The htc thunderbolt looks awesome. I blend of the x and the dinc with a rumored 1800mhz battery!

Yeah, I tried in the store first and they wouldn't even consider it. Said I would have to go through customer service. However, in regards to the battery, they just sent brand new extended batteries for free since the phones were refurbs and didn't have batteries with them!:D
