Help Any ETA on rooting?

I am an unenlightened novice to android, hoping to upgrade from my iPhone 4 to the Galaxy Note, so please bear with me.

I understand that the phone has just been released and early in the game but I was wondering if there were any developments on the rooting front. Moreover, how long does it usually take for rooting to come out for new android phones?
Would the android experience be GREATLY enhanced by rooting (I consider myself a power user of my phone)? Apple's iPhone is severely crippled without jailbreaking, is android crippled in any respect without rooting?

I'm new to android so I appreciate your time and patience.

Cheers:)

You may, or may not feel the need to root. Android isn't very locked down, so you already have access to many things that would be locked down on an iPhone. The only reason I typically root is to try out new roms, mods, and the ability to backup all of my apps+data.

For most people rooting is completely unnecessary. There are a few apps that require root, but it's not going to be a life changing experience.

Without rooting you can already customize nearly every aspect of your phone, and install non market apps. Root methods for Android devices can be released anywhere between 1 month before the device is released, all the way up until a year. (If the device has an encrypted or locked bootloader.) Although, you won't have to worry about waiting all that long with a Samsung device like the Note.

Keep an eye on this section over on XDA. The AT&T Galaxy Note should be rooted pretty quickly, although as far as I know the AT&T version hasn't been rooted yet.

Personally I would wait. This method triggers the internal ROM counter which could be a problem if you ever need to return the phone.
There is a good chance someone will enhance this method and stop the counter issue.

The short answer is that it counts how many times the device has been reprogrammed by an external device. Generally a piece of software called Odin running on a Windows PC is used to program firmware that will root the phone. For some phones it can be rooted without adding a count to this counter.

If a phone was to be returned for warranty reasons, i.e. defective hardware the manufacture or carrier could look at the counter and make a determination that the problem with the phone (or tablet) was caused by the use of "unapproved" firmware therefore voiding the warranty.

Hope this helps....
