Any hockey fans in Winnipeg? The NHL is coming back to Winnipeg pending final approval by the NHL Board of Governers: True North buys Thrashers, set to move team to Winnipeg

I'm not intimiately familiar with the Thrashers' situation in Atlanta. Most of the news I heard about a possible move of a team to Winnipeg has been centred aroud Phoenix (formerly the Winnipeg Jets) and the ownership situation there. When word of a possible relocation of Atlanta to Winnipeg came out, it caught me by surprise. The city of Glendale (where the Phoenix Coyotes play) voted to cover operating losses of the Coyotes for the next year, it ended any possibility of their going to Winnipeg. Now it's Atlanta to Winnipeg. I'd be interested to know more about the situation there from any members from Atlanta. For many years now, the media here has just reported about Phoenix, but very little about Atlanta.

It's like deja vous. Thirty years ago, an NHL team (The Flames) moved from Atlanta to Calgary. Now it's from Atlanta to Winnipeg. As a Canadian, I am happy that the NHL has decided to put a team in a place where people love hockey. I was really sad when the Jets left Winnipeg 15 years ago. I guess the economic climate has changed since then to allow a team to go back to Winnipeg. Back in the 90's, the lack of a salary cap/revenue sharing and the Canada/US dollar exchange rate made it very difficult for Winnipeg to support a team. Hopefully, now they can support a team long term. It is probably still a challenge as Winnipeg will be the smallest market in the NHL in terms of population. Even though the city's population is small compared to many other cities, it probably has a large enough contingent of hockey fans.

The city of Glendale put up millions of dollars to keep the Coyotes in town for another year. They have incentive to do so because of the stadium that was built there. Without the Coyotes, there would be no major tenant to fill the arena.

My impression of the attendence there is that there seems to be a significant number of Canadians who would travel there in the winter and take in a game or two. I don't think Atlanta is as popular a travel destination.

Here in Vancouver, hockey tickets, parking and food for the night can run you hundreds of dollars per person for a decent seat. When I hear about some ticket deals in Phoenix and some cheap flight tickets, it sometimes seems to be less expensive to fly to Phoenix to watch a game than it is to watch one here in Vancouver.

Im really wondering whats going to happen with the divisions of the east now, and if theyre going to bring in anymore teams.

Nothing will happen in 2011-2012 because it is too late to do a realignment. Winnipeg will take Atlanta's place in the Southeast division. The following year, I would expect that one of the two western conference teams in the Eastern time zone will move east.

Winnipeg (AZ better sell them the rights to the Jets name) will move back into the Central. It will be interesting to see which Western team will slide over to the East. IMO, Detroit, Chicago and St. Louis are untouchable leaving either Nashville or Columbus to move. I think the Jackets end up becoming an Eastern Conference team.

I see Nashville as the prime candidate to move into the East, replacing Atlanta in the Southeast division. Geographically, it is closest to the other cities in the Southeast. Columbus may also be a candidate as they are in the Eastern time zone.

One possible realignment will have Vancouver, Calgary, Edmonton, Winnipeg and Minnisota make up the Northwest division. I personally would prefer to have western teams try to play in a division where everyone is in the same time zone or only one over. The above division will have Vancouver in the Pacific time zone, Calgary and Edmonton in Mountain, and Winnipeg and Minnisota in the central. I hate it when the Canucks play in the Central or Eastern time zone because I always miss the first period of those games when I get home from work.

My preference would be to have Vancouver, L.A., San Jose, Anaheim and Phoenix in the Pacific division. Everyone is in the same time zone on daylight savings time and only Phoenix is one hour off on standard time. Calgary, Edmonton, Colorodo, Dallas and St. Louis can be in another division. Winnipeg, Minnisota, Detroit, Chicago and Columbus can be in the third division. This way, all divisional games will only play in their own time zone or one time zone over.

1. it's Minnesota (you're Canadian, you get a pass)
2. who else is watching this Cup final? looks like they're skating in sand! sooooo slow! are they both being this cautious?

Lol talk about penilty killing
Going into the third @ 0-0
And hammi still out

And has atlanta ever been able to keep a nhl team?

I get the spelling mixed up with Manitoba. :)

I end up missing most of the first period since the game starts at 5:15pm local time. Just because people on the east coast can't stay up an extra hour. It's easier to stay up an extra hour than to get off work an hour earlier. I didn't get home until almost 6pm.

Very close game. That's what happens when two Vezina trophy nominees play each other. Just look at the Vancouver-Nashville series. I expect the final to be low scoring like the one in round 2. It's still exciting. There were still many good scoring chances.

Tim Thomas reminds me of Hasek. Both play an unorthodoxed style. That save Thomas made on Hansen is a classic example. Most goalies go down in the butterfly on a shot. Thomas turned his right pad inward to stop the shot that was going through the five-hole. I have never seen a goalie make a save like that before. Well, not on purpose. If Thomas hadn't done that, it would have been a goal.

Luongo played really well, too. He had to be great, especially on that 5-on-3 as well. He let very few second chances on shots last night.

With the goalies playing so well, I thought we needed a lucky bounce to get a garbage goal. It turns out the winning goal was a really nice one. Kesler took an 80' pass from Bieksa, avoided a big hit, dragged his toe on the ice to remain onside (if his skate were off the ice, it would have been offside), got control of the puck and made a nice pass to Hansen who was 2-on-1 with Torres. Torres tipped a perfect pass from Hansen just passed the outreach stick of Thomas to score. Thomas almost made the save as well. As Maxwell Smart would say, "missed by that much."

For game 2, the big question for Canucks fans is whether or not Hamhius can play. It looked like an ankle injury to me. At least he has 2 days off before the next game. If Hamhius cannot play, the Canucks still have Ballard, Tanev and Alberts ready to step in. All 3 can play a regular shift on most teams. Alberts has the size, Tanev has the puck moving ability and Ballard has the "hip check".

Last time I watch hockey was way way back in my air force days up in new York. My buddy was a big bruins fan and he asked me who was going to win the cup. I looked at him and said the penguins. He laughted at me and said yeah right. I said they will sweep the series. He wanted to place a bet with me. I said no I don't gamble. When the penguins swept the series it crushed him and till this day I wish I would of made those bets as I would of raked it in.

I got out of hockey when got stationed to Louisiana. Not much hockey love down south. Must be a northern thing. Yeah eh? Lol. Sorry had to do it.

Might get back in to it but I know none of the players and makes it hard.

I have a feeling that my prediction is going to be right. That game was so close that I think it shows just how strong both teams are defensively. If they don't go to game 7 I'm going to be really surprised because both goalies were practically unstoppable. Also I don't like how Tim Thomas was getting ran into so much, it was like every few plays he was getting ran into or tripped and I think the refs need to watch that more. Oh yeah and burrows not getting a suspension is a bunch of bs.

Why should he be suspended? If you shoved your fingers in my mouth I would chomp down on them , I can understand why they didn't suspend him. And thomas wouldn't get run over if he stayed in his crease

Burrows got crosschecked right into Thomas who was outside of his crease. That should not have been a penalty.

Bergeron stuck his finger in Burrows' mouth while Burrows was talking. It's not like Tim Hunter on Tie Domi where Hunger was actually aiming for Domi's finger.

I am so extremely stoked to see the Jets fly again. I can barely remember going to watch NHL hockey when I was a wee tyke.

As far as TSN speculation (and my memory of it) goes, Winnipeg will move into the Northwest, Colorado will shift into the Pacific, Dallas pops up to Central, and Nashville slides over to the Southeast. But we'll see what happens after next year's Cup.

If you're talking about the play I think you're talking about, it seemed to me as though Burrows slew-footed Thomas, who was outside of his crease. It looked like a penalty to me, but I don't claim to have any intimate knowledge of the NHL rulebook or of any official rules interpretations. That said, I heard the CBC colour commentary guy claim that it shouldn't have been a penalty because Thomas was outside his crease and I thought that was a load of crap. Had he been inside the paint, it ought to have been goalie interference, but outside the paint, he still tripped him. Ergo, a tripping penalty.

I had a dream the night before the game that the 'Nucks were up 2-1 and late in the third, somebody from the Bruins tied it up, sending the game to OT, in which Milan Lucic scored the winner. I was madly hoping that this was just a dream and not some crazy precognition. I'm so glad that precognition doesn't actually happen, but sometimes it's fun to pretend.

As if I needed two more reasons to hate the Avs...lol

We have lift off. Seasons tickets sold out in 15 minutes.

I think that is the most likely scenario as much as I hate it. Just make the Canadian teams have to travel the most.

The way I see it, Burrows got cross-checked into Thomas. He stuck his leg out to maintain his balance and keep from falling into Thomas. If he did not do that, he would have fallen into Thomas instead as he got pushed in Thomas's direction.

The reality is the Bruins were up 2-1 in the third. Daniel ties it up for the Canucks sending it into OT and Burrows scored the winner. You an pinch yourself to make sure. :)

No, my dream was the night before game one. Clearly in the pretend world where precognition exists, it only goes so far into the future. :P

Is there a confirmation on this horrible name? Hockey history be DAMNED, as a Dolphins fan, Im destined to despise any team named the Jests. Errrrr, I mean jets. :) lol.

They're not that good any more. We had them when they were one of the best teams in the league for a long time.

Irrelevant. lol. You think the Rangers and Islanders like each other anymore despite the Islanders being irrelevant?

Wow I can't believe that OT goal Tim Thomas let in. That was seriously one of the worst goals I have seen a goalie let in. That could have been stopped pretty easily if he wasn't 20 feet out of his crease. The bruins coach really needs to tell Thomas to stop trying to be the third defensman out there.

The second goal was also scored because Thomas is so aggressive. He really tried to cut down the angle on Edler's point shot. The shot never made it. Burrows was in the high slot and fed it over to Daniel who had a wide open net. That is the scouting report on Thomas. Three out of the 4 goals scored on him in the final was scored with him out of position.

I don't think Thomas is going to change his style of play because it has gotten the Bruins this far and has gotten Thomas a record for save percentage and a Vezina nomination (which he will likely win). To make such a technical change in his game will take more than the two days between games. Luongo changed his style this season. Rollie Melanson, (the Canucks' goal tending coach) got Luongo to play deeper in his net. It took him several weeks before he found his game.

I can see the Bruins ensuring they take away any passes that the Canucks try to make after pulling Thomas out of his crease. That is more likely as they know the Canucks will be trying to find passing lanes to get open nets to shoot at.

The Bruins just embarrassed the Canucks. 8-1 wow that was awesome. I think that the Bruins will take this in 6. Not only was Tim Thomas spectacular this game, but also the Bruins having Thorton back is another advantage. I only wish that the Bruins kept Seguin out there. Seguin really deserves to be out there and that is a dumb move on the B's part to take him out.

On a side note did anyone else see all the back and forth "hey bite my finger" between both teams? I thought it was hilarious and can't wait to see the next game which should be pretty intense.
