I have had it for two days. The location of the power button is VERY irritating...
Moreso, when you have a gel case over the phone...

yeah i ordered a black gel case. With the power button not visible and a little set into the casing, it was hopeless with the case. Had to ditch it.

Handled a friends and could instantly tell the SIM cover sticks out a bit and the power button is terrible. The one on the Desire is perfect, why change it?
This is why I never trust asking opinions on these forums. Those were two blatantly obvious little niggles yet the major response is "no issues"

If the SIM cover sticks out a bit, you need to reinsert it using four fingers so it can slide in properly. Mine goes in all the way.
But yeah, the speaker volume and sound quality aren't that great, but I don't use it to play music, so its all good.
Everything else seems fine so far, excellent phone imo

What don't you like about the power button? Doesn't seem any different from any other smartphone I've used...

its awkwardly placed on the top of the phone. i use my index finger to turn it on (when holding in my palm face up) and because the power button is kinda sloping to the front its tough to press, not a huge prob for me just a bit annoying.
speaker volume slow, not got a great ring volume either for me but these are minor things and still much better than my iphone!

I found that when holding the phone iun my right hand and trying to press the power button (to turn off screen) I often hit the volume buttons by mistake. But with practice I no longer do this.
Also the camera lens design is poor. When the phone is put down on the desk it sits on the camera. A larger raised rim would have been better (with a gel case this is fixed though).

Yes! I have done this a few times. Never happened with the Desire.
Had the issue with the power button, but i think i just need to get used to the phones size, was playing around with the desire earlier and was laughing at how small everything looked. It felt so weird holding it. After a while im sure it'll be easy to do.
One thing i noticed on the sim cover is that one corner sticks out a bit compared to the other corner on the back of the phone (maybe more on the sides) is this what people are talking about? I've just ignored it dont really care. Doesn't change how i use the phone in any way.

I too don't have an issue with the sim or battery cover. Although can easily see how people can break them by not sliding them on correctly. Sim cover does come off from time to time when taking out of my case (wallet style)
Speaker and volume are a pain. Volume is low (ish) but is even worse with the speaker on the back. Try listening to music or a film with the phone placed down, you can't hear it. Also in a car cradle, the speaker during phone calls is too quiet. A combination of poor placement and cheap speaker.
HTC preinstalled software is generally poor too. Alot of reviews rave about the features HTC bring to the Android platform. But from my experience alot of it is rubbish or drains the battery too much to use. Alot of preinstalled apps like Amazon MP3, Peep, News and Weather, Sound Hound, Stock can't be taken off. Compared to the Milestone 2 (judging from reviews and videos) HTC have bloated the phone too much and not with alot of good stuff.
The new HTC sense is very limited. Not sure what the fuss is about. Great you can control your phone remotely if its stolen - but doesn't seem to offer anything else. Also HTC sync does not sync with Office 2010 X64 editions.
The pre-installed Sat Nav is rubbish compared to Tom Tom or Ovi Maps on Nokia phones. Its like a first gen sat nav program, flawed in so many ways - hardly HTC bragging about using it.
DNLA feature is limited too. Connecting the phone to a windows 7 PC or DNLA device is quite easy. But you can't stream DIVX videos to the device, seems like only MP4's work. Steaming from the phone to a DNLA media device works well though, but again - drains the battery quickly.
Phone is slightly too big to use with one hand. My hands aren't small or big, but I can not text or do emails with one hand. Trying to use the phone with one hand results in constantly pressing the screen in wrong places.

You have to use the power button every time to unlock the phone which is annoying.You have to hold the phone and press the button, unlocking the phone is almost a two hand job.

niggles:
- often hit volume whilst locking the phone
- when set to vibrate, occaisionally the pop-up won't go away for a while
- aluminium body looks like it will scratch easier than the screen (which is why it's safely tucked away in a gel case)
- friendstream and peep are utterly useless and a massive battery drain

No phone (no product) is perfect, to claim there's nothing at all wrong with the DHD is just silly.
For me, the slight issues are very obvious but are not a big problem (either individually or as a whole):
1. Battery/SIM covers are, at best, 'functional'. It took me a while to open both at first and I did worry I was going to break them. Once you're used to them they are OK and I guess most people won't need to use them too much past first switch on.
2. The power button was an issue for me until I more carefull adjusted/positioned my gel case - fine now.
3. It takes an age to delete even one SMS from the list. Not a big deal but it's noticeable enough to niggle.
Other than that, I'm still very pleased with the decision to go for the DHD. It is a an excellent device.

Definitely with you on the volume. Same thing happens with taking camera shots as well (zooming in and out all the time)
Other niggle with the camera is no physical button for taking the photo.
Some crud applications I can't get rid of (eg; Peep) keep running even though I don't use them.

what do you mean for point 3), time to delete an SMS or awful procedure to delete it? I'm still evaluating to get one DHD, so also this little things matter for me.

It's a small point, but I find it takes around 5 to 6 seconds from time I hit the 'delete' button for the phone to actually delete the message. I can't do anything else with the phone while it's going through the process. No idea why it takes so long, on all my previous phones it was literally an instant process.
Emails delete instantly on the DHD, so I'm really not sure why the SMS take so long to be removed.
Yes, that was one of the very first things I did with the phone. I don't find any lag with anything other than the deleting of SMS items.
What a shame...anyway did you find the phone nice to use? I know is a recurring question...
