Any Satisfied Hero Users?

I love my hero especially now that it is running a zippy little froyo rom. My only complaint is that it never came with a flash. That is just unforgivable nowadays. Fie on you HTC.

Lack of flash is annoying. I had it on my last phone from 2 years ago, so the Hero was a step backward in that regard. But a massive leap forward in other areas.

Love mine, but I never did the 2.1 update.
Definitely, a very cool phone. I like the size much more than the EVO that my wife bought!

I'm happy with mine so far, but probably for two reasons:

1) First smartphone I've ever had, for the last 8 years have been using various Nokia pay-as-you-go phones (I know, I know)

2) Rooted it the day it arrived, probably within the first two hours, ha. Read up about it for the week I was waiting for it, so I didn't go in unprepared. Was shocked how slow it seemed out of the box, threw on ZenEXP, and boy did that make a difference. Then OC'd, installed Launcherpro, and wow, much, much, much, much better. Been running the latest CM6 nightlies lately, and am now running the RC1 with the newest uncapped Decad3nce kernel (only have it max'd @ 691, never had a problem with it @ 710, but eh, I'll leave it at this for now.. always leave the min @ 160), collin_ph battery tweak, and I couldn't be happier with it right now.

Coming from years of various computer experience, getting this phone and rooting it/etc just seemed like the right thing to do, seemed like wasted potential not to. Interesting to see how far CM6 gets developed, wonder how long it will make my Hero more than tolerable until my upgrade/have extra $$ around to upgrade early.

Very satisfied with the Hero, got mine last Oct. Never had much trouble with the phone. Just disappointed that the Hero lost support for anything from Sprint, nature of technology I guess. So I guess that's why I looked into the rooting process when Sprint said that 2.2 would not be coming to the Hero. Now that I'm on Froyo, and have tried other roms, I'm so glad I rooted. Now, I'm completely satisfied with the Hero, thought about upgrading in Oct, but not now, now that I have the power to flash new roms on the phone. That can be the negative too, we have to have dev support and if they are not developing new roms, then the Hero will for sure go by the wayside. So, if you are rooted, support the devs and donate!!

Good point. A large, active and contributing base of Hero users is the way to keep developers motivated to maximize the potential of the phone.

Before rooting I thought my Hero was decent. It was slooooow but it got its job done.

After root I love this thing. It is OC'd and UV'd so it runs seemingly as fast as an evo and isn't as big and bulky (a plus in my opinion) and it doesn't have battery issues; I get about 2 to 3 days out of a charge.

Sense has been stripped out, I find it to be a nuisance since it bogs the system down, so I've been left with a clean rom that runs fast and snappy.

I have access to root only apps like the free wifitether app that allows me to connect any computer with wireless access to my phone as if it is a wireless router and use the phones internet.

People that don't root and install custom roms don't realize what they are missing out on. The phone is awesome if you free its shackles and give it a chance to run wild.

Okay, you guys have ME sold. After trying the Droid 2 and Droid X on Verizon and returning both of them I thought I'd give Sprint a try. I have a reservation for the Samsung but can't resist going old school with the Hero. I've always liked the design for the most part and would love to see a clean and fast custom rom on it. I also can't complain about sprints cell plans...so I bit the bullet and just ordered it.

I guess I should have confirmed this first, but I'm assuming that I can run Google Navigation (i.e. the GPS works fine on the Hero) and sync with Exchange (Calendar, Contacts and Email) natively or run Touchdown on it??

Yes, Google Nav works, used it yesterday. I also sync with my work email which has Exchange. I have tested on Exchange 2003 and 2007 and it works.
