Any Time is Grillin Time

One thing about grilling in the winter is that, while the grates get cleaned regularly, the kettle does not. I scraped a whole bunch of stuff off it yesterday, but is there a good way to clean the kettle without removing or disturbing the burners?

I don't know about your grill. I know that cleaning is always a hassle. I do love the ease of cleaning of my Traeger. It has a grease ramp the same size as the grate. It runs across the grill at an angle so that drippings will empty into a bucket. I keep that wrapped in foil. So to clean the grill I simply remove the foil and replace with new. I fire up the shop vac and suck up all of the ashes from the bottom. Copper bristle brush to the chrome grate... I'm done.

Great idea about the foil wrap! Right now we are getting plastered with snow. We lost about 1/2 of what we had and are getting a lot of it back again. Fishing season starts in a couple weeks and it looks like the ice won't be off the lake.

Great tips for grill cleaning!
Now that I have a proper grill I'm gonna have to follow your lead olbriar.

It's been cold here but off and on we have days in the low seventies. Trees are getting foliage and the grass is needing mowed. Spring is here.

Never heard of Traeger so I checked out their site. Was surprised to see this grill:Traeger Grill

Here is my Traeger smoker/grill. I absolutely love it.

Nice grill NA. I bet you will love it. Here is another tip for you... Grab up a can of baker's joy or some other non stick spray and lightly spray your grates before grilling. It keeps stuff from sticking and makes clean up a snap.

My plans have changed for Easter. We are all now gathering at my son's. He texts me..hey dad.. you and Moms coming over for dinner Sunday? I answer sure.. what shall I bring. Well.. I was wanting to BBQ some burgers and dogs but it is supposed to rain. I was hoping you might smoke some pulled pork Saturday and we can warm it up lol.
I answer sure.. how many am I feeding? Oh... between 12 and 15.

Off to the store I ran. I now have a couple of butts rubbed down and chilling. I'll start them before I leave for work. The wife can pan them up when she gets up. I should be home in time to baby them along. Sure sounds good.

Where does he live? Sounds like some good old Wisconsin beer would go well with that. He sure has you figured out. :)

America's Test Kitchen has done some great segments on grill cleaning. Unfortunately, looks like all their videos require an online subscription. But, you may be able to find them on your Roku should you have one.

That sounds interesting. I'm a Shiner Bock guy. I sometimes look about for something new to try.. but go home with my Shiners lol.

Shiner?!

A lot of bars have Spotted Cow on tap up here. Good Wisconsin beer. Have you had a Lienenkugel's, https://leinie.com/AV.aspx?returnUrl=Default.aspx?

When I grill, I time it in beers. Is it a one beer job or a two beer job?

Never had Lienenkugels. Just never interested.
Granted, I'm sorta a beer snob. :o

Olbriar, if you're ever in the Lawrence area, definitely hit up Free State Brew Pub. Love that place and have yet to visit a brew pub with better beer AND food. :)

Can you still only get 3.2 beer in the bars there? I lived in KS for a couple years in the 70s and that is all we could get.

All of that has changed over the years. We are still in the bible belt but quite a bit more liberal. You can get liquor by the drink and real beer at a pub. Drinking age is now 21 and there are no 3.2 bars. However, you can still buy 3.2 beer in grocery stores. They aren't allowed to sell alcohol. lol All of that might change soon. It's in the works to allow sales beyond 3.2 beer in the markets. Real beer and wine at least.. don't know about the hard stuff. We'll see if it passes.

Where abouts did you live when you were residing in my fine state? If you lived here a couple of years, you are well aware of the challenges of cooking out doors in the Kansas breeze lol.

I lived in Colby in '76&77. Nice town. Back then you have to bring your own booze and pay for set up. Seemed like a really dumb rule because you had to drink it all or leave it. Of course, if you did get drunk, there wasn't much for you to hit on the way home. :) I only drink beer so that was never an issue. I think all the liquor stores were state owned, is that right? Back then I only had a charcoal grill.

Colby, yes.. it's still a nice town. Most the places around here you could join a club. With your membership you had a share of the booze lol. They punched your card until your membership was up and you had to join again. What a laugh. As far as I know, the liquor stores were always independently owned. They were and still are somewhat limited as to sales. They can only sell what the state allows. Another joke. We've grown up some around here but we still have a long way to go.

I did all of my outdoor cooking on a hibatchi back in the early seventies. It was likely about your 76-77 time frame that I saved enough money to buy my first propane grill.
It was nothing fancy and had hot and cold spots. The burner was stamped metal and burn out in no time at all. I replaced the H shaped burner four or five times before I invested in a better grill.... and a better grill.. and yet another. It's been a long line of upgrades. The pellet smoke/grill cost less than my fancy jen-air propane grill but it will cook circles around it. It's not an economical cooking alternative but it's certainly far more versatile. I wonder what will be next lol.

I lived in Lawrence about 5 years ago and friends told me they only recently were able to sell booze on Sundays. They had to drive to Kansas City to get their weekend fix. :)
When I lived in NC, they only recently "popped the cap" so to speak the sell higher ABV beers.
But anyway, Free State makes one of the best barleywines I've ever had and it's ~11% ABV. :)

Oh yeah, hibachis. Very popular back then. Not much cooking area but it did the job.

I grew up in MA in the 50s and early 60s. We had Blue Laws. They had liquor stores, though. They were called package stores.

My Team Grill has its hot spots in the back and warmer spots in the front. I like it that way.

I saw that somewhere.:eating:

I have a friend that does picnic catering. Roast beef or pig roasts. He has 3 trailers and slow roast while he is driving down the road. Carves everything on site.
