Root Any tutorials on how to use Bootstrap/Clockwork Recovery/ROM Manager?

I'm not really sure how to go about using these now to create a backup and recovery for my phone in case anything ever happens. I have downloaded Droid X bootstrap and ROM Manager so far....not really sure where to download Clockwork (if this is even a different app than what I have).

Does a tutorial on how to use these things exist anywhere? I did a search on this forum, but it seems like everything is for moderately experienced users.

I am also looking for a good explanation and set of tutorials on the clockwork subject.

taking backups / loading backup images like the deodexed-rooted-2-2.zip nice clean image from the other post.

more details and explanations always people feel safe doing the modifications.

Yes! A guide for these would be so helpful! :D Been looking for a guide for weeks but can't seem to find any particularly helpful info.
I have Bootstrap, and I think I managed to do a backup, but I really have no idea what I did...
 
1. Get bootstrap recovery either from
here or the market
2.Open it up and press bootstrap recovery and then exit out of it. (You will never have to open it up again unless you are flashing a new rom/system)
3.Get rom manager from the market and press flash clockwork at the top and install it by clicking "droid x".
4.Scroll down to backup current rom
5.name it
6.press done
:D

Now if you ever want to install a rom that is on your sdcard just press install zip from sdcard and select it.

If the rom you are looking for is on rom manager, press download and find it
 
I agree as well. I think I made a good backup with bootstrap, but can't tell. I would also like to know if it is possible to restore backed up data to different rom versions, such as data from the leaked 2.2 to another rom that I might get.

yeah I just made one above your post and yeah you can press reboot recovery in rom manager and then do n advanced restore and just do data

Hey droider! What's up man. Quick question. Would you recommend the donated version of rom manager over the free? And what's the difference, if you can clarify that for us.

as of now you don't need the premium version, but once more roms come out some will only be available in the paid version
 
I just downloaded the Bootstrap from the link Droider13 posted in one of the posts above. Is the one in the link the updated version or is it the one in the market?

I just want to make sure what version I have (how do I check that) before I follow Droider13's instructions on how to install Froyo. Also, about moving the SU to XBIN. I see that this can be done through Root Explorer, is that or the ADB method recommended?

Also, what is the difference between "r/o" and "r/w"??

After this, I think I should be set. I literally read every single post and thread in here. Just so I can soak up as much information as I could.

Yes it's very useful if you are going to flash ROM's. (You can do it all yourself though but you may have to go gather up everything you will need first) The app can download the ROMS and apply them all in one nice easy place and step.. It also has other options that are nice to have. What do they charge for it now days? I think I paid 1.99 and it was well worth it.

r/o is Read Only r/w is Read Write and you need it R/w to write files there. Root explorer has a nice button to switch fro r/o to r/w. Make sure you put it back to r/o when done.

Root explorer is easier than ADB IMO To use. With ADB you should be comfortable with command line, or at least copy and paste :-) and you'll need to have your PC setup properly with the correct drivers. Root Explorer is just a file directory app that can see all the files on your phone and as mentioned before it's easy to switch from r/o to r/w making it easy to copy and delete files and mess up your phone:D. Make sure to nandroid first.

BTW Droider13 is a bot:D

So I'm about to do this man!! I'm real hyped. I believe I have everything that I need. How do I tell if my phone communicates with RSD correctly?

Also, how can I check what version I have of BOOTSTRAP?

One thing that I found weird though was that when I updated to premium version (rom manager), I saw both the free and the premium. So I thought that it would be safe to remove/uninstall the free version? I rebooted my phone and then all I saw was the .apk install picture on my home. I reinstalled the free version and it's okay now, but I don't know if I'm using the free or premium version anymore. What do I do?

So with root explorer, I should ... click r/w and then move my SU to xbin? After doing that.. I have to look for logwrapper, and delete it. And then look for logwrapper.bin, and RENAME that to just "logwrapper"?? I haven't used the RootExplorers search engine, but I'm assuming it should find it just fine.

I rooted with universalandroot 1.6.5 and it created the SU file in the xbin folder, but I also had a 0 byte su file in the bin folder. I think I'm all set to clockworkrecovery the deodexed 2.2 though, and maintain root, correct?

I'm currently rooted with 2.1, nothing else. I have the sbf just in case, as well.

Yep, I've done everything so far using Root Explorer. I don't even have ADB installed (my main machine is a Mac), and I'm hoping to avoid it unless I have to smb. Thanks to the help of everyone here (especially you, Droider), I've been able to go from stock 2.1, root my phone, upgrade to 2.2 with root, make nandroid backups, and now install flyX.

I don't know about the rest of you, but I know I've come a long way thanks to the great community here!

If you get bootstrap from the Market your good I think he's also updated the free version on his site but not sure. I'm not really sure how to tell it doesn't seem to have a version # anywhere. I'm fairly sure he's replaced the old versions though so just go for it.

The Paid version is just a key and you still need the other to make it work.

Sounds about right

You only have to do the logwrapper if you've installed Koushs recovery. With the new version I'm not sure you still have to but to be safe you should I guess. . It's not hard to find even without the search just look in the system folder
