If all you're looking for is root then you do not need windows or drivers.

Download the appropriate file from http://androidforums.com/galaxy-pre...oot-samsung-prevail-replenish-shabbyfied.html

Unzip into a folder on your computer. Plug in the phone. Since you're using linux I'm going to assume you know your way about some command line. Don't worry. Its not really that hard.

From the command line browse to the unzipped folder. Read the contents of the directory (ls). Make sure the file Linux-Mac.sh is executable. If it isn't make it executable (chmod +x file). Run the file ( ./Linux-Mac.sh)

Follow the prompts and your Prevail will be rooted by the end of the procedure.

If you're looking for a full flashing+cwm etc. I'd suggest you get hold of a windows machine as I've never tried Heimdall or you could install VirtualBox and try it from there. Most people who own a computer have a legit license to xp laying about.

Good luck. Keep us posted if you use VirtualBox or Heimdall so we can let others know how it goes.
