Anybody looking at moving to the G2?

OK, I'm thinking about your post IMUcarmen. What are people doing modding an exceptional device already? (I'll give you the benefit of the doubt and assume you're just making people aware there is developer support for it, so the hop to the G2 from the Spectrum has that upside).

OK, I imagine the response: making an exceptional device even better. :smokingsomb:

But seriously, what is CM10.2 doing for the device? I think if I can get into a G2 in the next 6 weeks when I'm due for an upgrade, I'm going to want to see if I can live with the device stock for a bit anyway.

Surely I won't get bored or feel the need to fix something that isn't really broken.

I mean removing the bloat is one thing... But, with a different launcher, can't you make the U.I. a little leaner and meaner?

Does CM10.2 do anything in the way of improving performance, responsiveness, UI simplicity, battery life, functionality, etc over what's there and what you would get out of using a replacement launcher like Holo HD or other?

Please constrain your laughter. The question is serious.

good question.

Its about what you like and want in a rom. I've run the stock rom since i've had the phone and like it alot and i'm actually very happy with it. But after everything is said and done and look at all factors I still like Cm or AOKP or one of the many roms based off AOSP more for several reasons.

It's not about making the device better, it's about making it suit your needs and desires.

PS: There are now officially 3 4.3.1 roms out for the verizon g2 as of yesterday. For whatever reason the verizon version is getting the most dev love so far :D

So neph! no need to worry about development for the g2!

I like your response, except you only hinted at the answer. What are some of those reasons? Are you developing or experimenting? Is it something of familiarity?

I guess I'm trying to figure out what is its shortcomings on stock and what is the real advantage from your prospective to go with a different ROM?

With the Spectrum, initially I had to root it. But when it got upgraded, it worked so well for me that I treated it for the appliance that it is. With a replacement Launcher, it just works better and as you say, fits my needs.

Looks like one reason to root, but not move off stock on the G2 may be too have better control on hiding the soft keys. I may be wrong there but that's all I'm coming up with based on what I read so far..

Really appreciate your take on this.

Honestly there arent any real short comings with the stock rom that can't be fixed with rooting and putting TWRP on. But for me personally the reason I still like AOSP based roms more is because...

1.) theme manager - I've bought many many themes for it, and I love being able to change every aspect of my phones look in an instant.

2.) quick toggles grid - on the g2 this doesn't exist and I really really miss them

3.) having the features built in with roms like AOKP, PA, PACMAN, and others is awesome. When I run those roms I'm always in settings messing around with things and its nice having maximum control of my handset!

4.) another big reason which may attract a lot of people is space. The stock rom for the g2 is over 2GB and CM and the other AOSP based roms are around 200MB so therefore you are going to free up a lot of extra space for yourself to use.

I am interested in a sensors test. The only thing bugged me with the spec is any compass app is useless do to inaccurate and Google sky map won't show the part of sky being pointed to and very, very jittery for both.

OK, that one I get. :D

@LillieBennett: My Spectrum locks quickly, sees plenty of SATs, and is accurate down to about 6-9ft. The first one that I had, that became a lifting body on the hood of my car and got run over and had to be replaced, I think it had some issues with slow lock. Now I think the Android update that VZW and LG rolled out fixed things up. Yours should be good now. If not, I think you have a HW issue... Did you ever perform a Factory Reset on the device after upgrading?

To your point though, on other sites, I've read people complaining about the G2 and GPS so I think your question is a good one. I'm curious why we aren't seeing people here reporting GPS problems.

I haven't done any sensors test but i personally would never use a smartphone for an accurate compass reading.

There are people reporting gps issues but I havent seen that yet on 4 G2's

Mine locks instantly! not in one second, not in two, i mean as soon as i press navigate the blue line pops up and the robot chic is telling me where to go.

Wow. Do you like being told off? :D

With other people experiencing problems, I wonder if their cell towers are setting them up with the wrong time, or there are too many hops to the server providing assistence data or they are getting stale data.

Like batteries, I bet there is a distribution function in sub-assemblies. Perhaps sourced from different places. Possible manufacturing variance..

as long as it's a female voice telling me off then i'm good :p

verizon g2 now has five 4.3.1 roms

We got official CM support with CM10.2 and since it's official I would assume once the CM based on 4.4 comes out then we will be getting it

We got PA

We got OSE <~~just tried for the first time tonight and loving it

We got Vanir

We got AICP

I finally got a smartphone with good dev support!

Wow... I haven't looked for a few days and all this happens.

Add carbon rom to that!

BTW carbon rom is the best AOSP based rom i've ever used, OSE and AICP are super awesome as well

Development did have a slow start, but you're right, it's rocking now!
Have to say, I'm sticking with stock rooted for the time being. Been on AOSP for the past few years, and this is a nice change. :)

I'm just not ready to settle for no sdcard and no replaceable battery. I have my sights on the galaxy note 3 developer edition.

I thought the same thing until I tried the Note 3 in the store and it still feels laggy sliding between screens and menus. It's fast, but does not feel as fast as the G2. I've had the Note 2 for over year and I have to say it's just too big, especially if you put it in a otter box. I'm 6'3" and have big hands and I really prefer the size of the G2, I can do everything single handed and it doesn't feel awkward, and more of the LG UI enhancements are usable, at least to me.

Not missing the SD card nor being able to replace the battery. I'm getting almost 2 days out of a single charge.

I did like the stylus on the Note 3, just not sure how often I would use it as I almost never used the one on my Note 2.

@stef - for those of us still on unlimited data wifi tether is another good reason to root/rom ;)

as always YMMV - :)

I no has money. I really hope KitKat shows up in CM for the Spectrum, because I will be rolling this phone for a long while. It's still a very fast phone, limited by the performance of its operating system.

So u got the g2 imu? i was looking at it today and the g4 kinda torn...what u think?

if you mean the g2 and s4 then thats a no brainer. the s4 is trash. Actually all samsungs are locked down laggy trash. g2 is a solid device with tons of developement going on.

BTW I owned both. I had an s4 for 2 months and the day I sold it was a happy day.
