Help anyone able to help me update to 2.1?

Ok, if you're going for Villain 12 then you won't get any OTA updates. You don't need them though, V12 is the latest official firmware, but with lots of extra root only tweaks

If you switch off your phone, then boot again by holding Home + Power, what screen do you get? Does it say Amon Ra or Clockwork near the bottom? If so, does it give a version number? (Something like 1.5.3 or so on).

EDIT: Something like this

OK. Mine says: RA-hero-v1.5.2

Also, for info, my baseband is : 63.18.55.06JU_6.35.09.26 which I think is later than the original one.

Thanks again!

Aye, that's an old 'un. :) Update to the latest version.... there's a link to the support thread here, and further on in the thread here someone kindly made it available as a flashable *.zip if you don't fancy the command-line approach.

A good rule-of-thumb for the baseband is, "if it works then don't futz with it". ;) Leave it as is for now and then, if performance under a new ROM suffers, you can upgrade.

OK Slug, Now I'm confused! As I said, I am no expert, so let me see if I have understood this:

I thought we had agreed that, before upgrading to Android 2.1, I should upgrade my ROM to Villain 12. My current ROM is MoDaCo 3.1 (which is listed on the phone settings under 'Build Number').

Having performed the check asked for by Xyro we have also established that I have something listed as RA-hero-1.5.2 (I don't know what that is, but it seems to be a recovery file - what is it for?) you are telling me to upgrade this to the latest version, which I think is Ra-hero-1.7.0.1.
I have downloaded a zip file with this in and assume that if I copy this to the root folder on my SD card and then start the phone holding the home button down can I then flash this? Should I be backing anything up first? Is this going to wipe everything?

I have also downloaded the zip file for Villain 12. At what point should I put that on the card and flash it? Should I do any backups first?

Once I get the Villain ROM installed, will Android 1.5 continue to work until I upgrade to 2.1? As Android 2.1 will not be available OTA, how/where do I get it? I can't see it available for download from the HTC site.

Thanks for you patience!!

Ok Scarrsport, let me clarrify the way this works for you :)

You seem to be thinking that Villain 12 is just a stepping stone to 2.1. But if you install Villain12 it is android 2.1. The people that made that ROM have taken the official OTA 2.1 firmware, rooted and tweaked it, and made it available to use under the name V12. So if you're running V12, then that's it; you won't be moving onto the official OTA update (And why would you? The official firmware is a downgrade compared to V12).

The choice you have is whether to go use the official 2.1 firmware, or to use V12. And I think you can tell which one we recommend :P

The recovery menu (accessed by booting holding home + power) is the tool with which you flash custom firmware such as V12. You're running an older version of the recovery menu, which is why slug told you to upgrade. Once you've done that, you'll use the recovery menu to replace your old firmware with the villain12 2.1 firmware.

If you want to go to the official OTA firmware, then the process is entirely different.

So, official or custom firmware? :)

Ahh, thank you Xyro - now I see the light!

Villain 12 it is then! why change the habits of a lifetime....

I will report back on progress, bit busy right now. have dusted off my old Nokia N82, just in case I screw this up!

Thanks guys.

Since your phone is already rooted all the hard work is already done. And with that amon-ra.zip Slug found, it should be really easy :)

Almost, but not quite!!

I did a wipe and factory reset on the handset.

Flashed and installed RA-hero-v1.7.0.1 no problem and rebooted.

Replaced that .zip file on the SD card with VillainROM12.0.0-Full-signed.zip from the Villain site and flashed that. Message said completed and I re-booted. After a while the VillainROM logo came up in green on the screen, then the start up screen with the time and date. When I wipe that down to open I get a message saying "Sorry! The application HTC Sense (process com.htc.launcher.com) has stopped unexpectedly. Please try again." With the "Force close" button. If I push that I get an htc logo then the same message again. I have tried re-booting to no avail Any ideas please??

I should perhaps add that I now can't shut the phone down because if it hit the force close button followed by the on/off button the "Sorry" message comes up on top of the "phone options" menu. If I hit "Force Close" again followed by "Power off" the "Sorry" message comes up again before the phone has registered that I want to power it off!!!

OK, by persistence I have managed to turn it off!
I re-started it into the recovery screen.

At the bottom it says that the Build is v1.6.2a NOT the 1.7.0.1 it showed as having installed when I did it.

I will leave it as it is now and hope for a quick response!!

I think VR12 has replaced the recovery with that version - is it blue rather than green? In any case, nothing to worry about.

Re the Sense fc issue... in this situation I'd simply do another full wipe, including dalvik-cache and EXT (if applicable) then flash VR12 again. Once it's rebooted don't touch anything until it's settled down.

OK, Panic over!! I think I'v sorted it....

Found a useful post here HTC Sense Issue after uninstalling Launcher Pro. - xda-developers and I managed to get in and clear the HTC Sense data, without any obvious ill effects.

Gmail is now up and running with synced contacts and I assume location will catch up in due course.

Phone details now show Firmware VillainRom 9.0.0
Build Number VillainRom 12.0.0
Software 3.32.405.1

But in System Recovery it still shows RA-hero-v1.6.2a which is odd as I downloaded the .zip file from XDA Developers and it was named recovery-RA-hero-v1.7.0.1-update.zip.

Do you have any thoughts on that? Should I still be trying to get v1.7... installed?

Thanks to both of you for your patience :)

Thanks Slug, I think our posts crossed there.

No, it's still green....

I do have an image file of the 1.7 ROM. I presume I could install a file manager and run that? Is it worth a try or might it screw up the Villain stuff??

Like Slug said, V12 might have replaced the recovery image for you. (Although that is unusual - most ROMs don't).

There's very little difference between those versions, and you'd be fine to stick with 1.6, but you can always reapply 1.7 if you want.

EDIT: Here's a link (courtesy of Slug), with a .zip you can flash to apply the most recent recovery image. Very handy :)

Yea, thanks Guys!

I think I might not tempt fate and just leave well alone for now and see if it all works smoothly. It certainly looks much 'busier' than the old 1.5 with a lot more toys to play with!

I'll keep you posted.

Keep up the good work :)
