anyone buying a RAZR/Rezound with the full intent to return it?

Something to think about. I just got back from a Verizon Wireless dealer, NOT a corporate store.
I asked the owner about the rent a Razar type deal. He said, after 14 days you own it. He didnt mention the holiday deal and I forgot to ask. I also wonder if that is some sort of corporate VZW deal and the independent dealers are not involved.
He also said on most returns, he can find something wrong with the phone to bill you for, generally 200-bucks. He also said he has to buy the phones from VZW for 5-600 each and spread the interest out over a year or so. So you go in, rent a Razor for 299, bring it back, pay 35 bucks restocking fee, and he has a used Razar that he paid 5-600 for. He said he will find something wrong to make up the difference.
Hate to say it, but I see his point, since he is floor planning the phones out of his pocket. He's not Corporate VZW, he's a mom and pop operation (in this case, husband and wife).
He also said that your upgrade date is from when you purchase the phone.
I was planning on buying a cheap smart phone to tide me over till I got the SGN, when ever that is. But by doing so I would not be eligible for the upgrade price and would have to pay the full price of the SGN whenever it comes out.
Personally, I think alot of people are going to be kinda screwed or have major problems returning phones.

The dealer didn't have any Razars in stock, but had a dummy one. It wasn't to big in my opinion, but diffintly bigger than my Eris.

Billd

Um, no. A lot of us are smart enough to distinguish between a Verizon Store and a dealer.

I wrote what I wrote, cause I personally wouldnt go rent a phone for a few weeks. I didn't relize that the mom and pop VZW stores pay for there own phones. I guess when they get them back they send them back to VZW to get refurbished, re packaged. I would guess they get some sort of credit. Not sure if it makes the store owner break even or not.

If your renting a phone to try to screw VZW because the SGN didn't come out on the non announced, rumor only, released date, at least go to a corporate store.

Mabey the corporate stores don't scrutinize the returns as much, so you would have a better chance of not paying for damage. The independant owner is just trying to protect his investment. What if he had 20-25 returns on Razors? Thats some real cash layout.

In the end, all the returns end up coming back to us as refurbished pre owned phones, which we bitch about when we get them cause we wanted a new ones.

As far as reporting him, every time I have ever been in the store, the customer service has been top notch, and the employees were able to answer my questions. No problems.

If you can't own a phone for a month without keeping it undamaged and flawless....

I went in my VZW corporate store yesterday to ask about the "activation" and no return after 14 days things that are floating around. For whatever it is worth, they said the return date is the return date, whether activated or not. That is consistent with what is stated in the actual return policy.

I really like the Rezound except for the bloat and Sense. It is pretty thick and the SGN is 4 mm thinner, but it is also 6.5 mm longer. I have no problem rooting to get rid of the bloat, once permanent root happens, and ROMing to go with a stock experience, but I worry that the Rezound won't get S-OFF.

Tough choice: nice hardware with the Rezound and eventually ICS but possibly no S-OFF or SGN with vanilla android to start and a handset that is developer friendly and easily rootable and ROMable.

Having played with a Rezound in the store, I think the thickness is overstated. The RAZR is supposedly the thinnest phone out there but does it's thinness make it more desirable? I think social media is trying to convince us that thin is better just like they claim more megapixels make a better camera. The fact is that the Rezound is no thicker than most of the previous smartphones and it is more than comfortable to hold in your hand. That argument alone would never keep me from enjoying the Rezound.

My stance all along has been that I will get whichever of these two phones is available with full root first. I wish the Rezound would get an unlocked boot loader just as much as I wish the SGN would go on sale today! God forbid they both make me wait until 2012 at which point I will begin drooling over the next generation of phones...

I agree with you here. I do think "thin is better" is more something the manufacturers are telling us we want. I mean obviously, thin is good if one can fit the same stuff in a thinner space, but so far that isn't how it's working. The Razr is crazy wide so that it can be so thin. At some point for me, a phone is too thin if it is so thin that it doesn't feel like it has substance in the hand compared to how wide it is.

The Nexus manages to be like 4mm thinner, which does feel like it should be noticeable, but certainly not a decision-swaying difference, for me at least.

I'm coming from an original Droid, so the REzound just feels humongous to me, and the Nexus will feel even larger, so the idea that it will at least feel thinner is a draw, nonetheless.

Agree. If the SGN releases and there is no S-OFF, I will probably exchange the Rezound. But if their is permanent root and S-OFF before the SGN drops, I can totally see myself keeping the Rezound. There is, still, something to be said about having ICS on the device is optimized for.

device is a little too wide for my tastes, but i have small carny hands. screen is great, haven't compared it directly to the rezound, but it is by far the best i have seen in person. comparing it side by side with a bionic is a night and day difference. so nice to be able to see it in direct sunlight, this was definitely not the case with my thunderbolt. battery life is average for a 4g phone, but as i already mentioned, i am used to carrying a spare and that is just not possible now. SmartActions is useful, i wish it had an underclocking option built in, but it is only on version 1.0.0 so we may yet see that feature in an update.

The bad about the Razr bezel is the width, but the good is a hot swap card slot was afforded and game emulators are better, since a little more space to hold and clear for fingers on the virtual controls.

Reading postings about the Nexus on other sites I have some concerns about possibly returning the Rezound for the Nexus when it comes out for Verizon.

I've read that the speaker (not earpiece) volume is quite low. In my opinion that could be a deal breaker. Notifications, ringtones, if you can't hear them, well that's a problem. I read about this over at the xda forums. I've also read reviews stating the same

I'm also concerned about the build quality of the Nexus. I haven't read anything about it, but having owned a Samsung Fascinate, I am being cautious.

I am within my return window until Jan 15th. The Rezound has been very good to this point. I guess I will have to wait until I read some actual reviews when the Vzw Nexus is out in circulation. In a holding pattern until then.

i'm in the same boat, but will indeed return after the test drive. the screen on this rezound is simply gorgeous. hardware is almost solid. just wish that htc would rid themselves of capacitive button light leak issue along the bottom edge of the device. this is the second time that i've had this issue (have owned a evo4g some time ago with the same problem. the irritating thing about this phone is the lack of substance in the power and volume buttons. i really have a hard time pressing them sometimes. i also have the problem with my voice being muffled with others talk with me during a call while using the beats headphones.

nexus it is.

You've got a similar fear that I do as well , the speaker quality and camera quality are my biggest concerns. This would be something you could do exchange your Rezound for the Gnex and if it doesn't wow you over see the GNex and buy a used Rezound my guess is the resale value on the Gnex will be much higher then the Rezound

just a thought

I did forget about the camera on the Nexus. Thanks for pointing that out. I have looked at pictures posted for all three cameras, the Razr, Rezound and Nexus. I have no comment about the pictures I saw, but I am quite happy with the Rezound camera. Coming from an iPhone 4, I can see what a 5MP shooter can do. The Nexus shots did not impress.

I read reviews about the buttons (power and volume) on the Rezound being too recessed. My Rezound buttons seem to be ok. I don't seem to have a problem finding them or pressing them. They do not rattle, that's key for me. I just wish they were more pronounced, but if that's my only complaint, I can live with that.

Voice quality, volume, reception, all seem to be excellent for me. The speaker volume is great.

I also had the Iphone 4 and it was very good I actually use my Rezound set at 5mp seems to shot a better shot IMO on lower light situations which is where most my pictures are taken

Galaxy Nexus Review: Two Steps Forward, One Step Back

Check out this review they do a comparison of the Iphone4s , Rezound , SGII and Galaxy Nexus cameras and the Galaxy Nexus is by far the worst of the 4 I didn't look at the video yet
IMO the SGII shot by far the best pictures especially the lower light photos. The Rezound and IP4 were pretty close with the Rezound looking a little over saturated and the Galaxy Nexus looking flat out bad . I really don't get why they didn't put the same camera from the SGII on the Nexus

For those who think the Rezound earpiece and speaker volume are good, what was your previous phone? Mine was an original Droid and I seriously find the speaker to be too low on the Rezound. I could hear GPS directions loud and clear with my Droid and didn't even have to turn media volume all the way up. Speakerphone I would set just one notch below max and I could set the phone down and walk all around my bedroom and hear it. I could use the speaker for music in a pinch and hear it well also. With the Rezound, I find myself maxing volumes and still struggling to hear sometimes. If the Nexus is not as loud, I may really have to reconsider the exchange.

I currently have the Rezound and an EVO but before the Rezound had the Thunderbolt and Incredible . The Rezound speaker is louder then all of them. I did have a OG Droid for a short period and one thing I remember of it was the loud speaker but I thought the Rezound was equal or louder to that but then again it has been over two years since I owned the OG Droid for only a week

I don't know if any current phone can match the speaker output of the original Droid. When I switched to the X2, I was amazed that a phone speaker could be so quiet after having been spoiled by the Droid for 20 months. I don't know that the Nexus or the Rezound are any better, but I'm of the opinion that comparing to the original apparently isn't fair since NONE of them seem to match up in this department.

I boxed my ReZound up last night. I never even took the beats earbuds out. I'm going in tomorrow to see my friend at VZW to return it. I hope it goes hassle free. Then "IF" Friday is official i will make an appt with her to pick up the G Nex.

**edit***

After seeing today's headlines i still plan on returning my ReZound tomorrow. It gave me enough fun to wait out this G-Nex thing.

...
If the Nexus is not as loud, I may really have to reconsider the exchange.

It's not your imagination; my Rezound is neither as loud nor as clear as my OG. Sometimes it seems fine, but others I have to keep asking the other party to speak up or repeat. FWIW, I think the Charge was worse. :( Don't know what to recommend with respect to Nexus on that score.

Yikes. I guess I will have to wait and see on the Nexus volumes then, and decide what my dealbreakers are. None of these phones are perfect, so just have to decide which one comes closest to meeting my wants.

I bought the Razr- Fully intending to return it for the Nexus. Having heard all the opinions on this forum, which have essentially dismissed the Razr as a lesser phone, I was expecting this to be a short marriage.

Ya know, I am at the point where I can't see swapping it out for the Nexus. There are a few things the Nexus will be better at, that matter to me- higher res screen, battery swap, ICS etc.

And truthfully there are a number of things I would really miss giving up the Razr - thin, sexy, durable hardware, amazing Battery life(12-24hrs), camera, smart actions, moto-cast(not talked about enough), future ICS and it's brilliant screen. The Razr is a really sweet high-end piece of hardware.

Guys- this is not about regret- these phone are very similar in their overall quality. Does a Mercedes owner go to bed regretting they don't have a BMW?

Forget the message boards- forget the internet- forget your friends- forget the specs... Buy the phone that gets you excited.

Side note-
I can confirm- the speaker volumes on the razr and rzound are lower than the OG Droid- Credit where credit is due- the Droid 1 was a tank.

I purchased the RAZR when Amazon was having their $.01 sale since I really liked the form factor of the phone with no intention of returning it, but because of the poor battery life it went back yesterday. So now I'm just waiting for the GN to get here so I can get back to Android.

So has anyone returned a device since this started? Past your 14 day window? I'm headed down to VZW shortly to return my rz for iPhone 4s... Maybe one day google and VZW will get their act together.

I got the Rezound with the idea of possibly trading it in for the Nexus. Stopped at Verizon today while I was out and (of little surprise) no Nexus! It's getting to be a running JOKE IMO. I'm about at the point to just say screw the Nexus, as my Rezound has been pretty fab anyway. At the rate they're going the Nexus is no longer going to be a cutting edge device by the time it's released. Quad core is just around the corner! Anyway that's my feeling on it. How many times can it get pushed back and still expect us to be interested?
