Anyone got the New Version of Maps Yet ..?

I filled in request for an 'invitation' to try the new version of maps (only available by invitation and only on desktop Chrome or Firefox at the minute), but haven't heard anything back yet :(

Not sure why a new release of maps should require an invitation :confused:

From what I read, all the new version does is extend some of the street-view-inside-businesses functionality .. which is hardly very exciting ..

I figure I must have missed something - what new killer features have they added?
 
I have it, it's pretty cool.

Rather than automatically going to Street View, it gives you tiles of nearby Street View images that you can select. Also, when in Maps, to get the satellite imagery you click in the bottom left corner, next to the SV pictures.

You can also right-click a spot to select an endpoint, then right-click another spot and select to get directions, it then gives you options for walking, driving, biking, public transportation.

Too much new stuff to list but it's a nice improvement.

And of course I was talking about the browser-based version, not the app. Though the browser-based version was implied when saying access was requested I suppose.
 
Finally found my invitation to try it out last week and .. completely forgot about it :o

Must remember to check it out tonight .. or maybe tomorrow :D
 
One of the things I really don't like about android is that it doesn't allow for manual updating. You'll just have to wait. If you don't already have it, it will be rolling out to Android 4.0.3+ users in the next couple of weeks.
 
No do not have it yet myself. Google is rolling it out in phases. You can always sideload it, but always better to wait for it to come from the play store.

Ehm, what you meant is updating ahead of schedule... You can do that by getting the apk and installing it on your device. Since it is signed you're also able to update it through the market when another update hits the shelves...

You do a manual update when you hit the button update in the market whenever a new update appears...

The new interface is, let's just say, it takes getting used to... I can't use it on my Eee PC due to the fact that the zoom buttons have vanished and the Eee Pc in particular is missing a touchscreen...
 
Then would you be so kind and explain to me why there are buttons labeled update (they are in german in the screenshots but Aktualisierung means Update)?

Those show up when google wants them too. Again, there needs to be a way to update manually. Key word manually.
 
My gosh, get the apk and update it by that...
Clicking that button IS manually updating.

Of course they are released by Google, because Google runs that damn Playstore.

How do you think that is in Windows or anywhere else for example? The manufacturer releases the updates when they think it's the right time. And when they decide version A gets the update a week earlier than B, then you have to live with that or get the update from somewhere else and install it yourself without that GUI called Playstore in Android, Windows Update in Windows, etc...
 
Sorry, not here to debate this, and no one's talking about who runs google play. Agree to disagree. IMO the software is poorly written and should be changed for easier manual updating. Have a good day.
 
Got it yesterday from the Play store, and there's an update tonight (prob bug fix) I'm installing as I type. Like the new Google Now-ish look, and they updated many street view locations in the Nashville market. I passed a Google street view car on April 17th of this year and noticed it was updated after I installed the update.

Here's me (fuzzed out) in the FedEx truck:
