I was able to get the shutdown animation to be replaced by putting individual png files in /System/Media/Video/Shutdown.
Still no joy on the startup side though. I continue to see SAMSUNG when I boot up and then a black screen till launched. Do the folks that were successful in changing the animation still see SAMSUNG first? I am wondering where that still comes from so I can delete it. I would prefer to have a black screen than that logo.
