Help Anyone return an Evo because the bottom screen is separating

Has any1 had a Palm Pre in the past? If so, you will know that every phone has its defects. My Palm Pre had light leaking from allllll around the screen. On top of that, i had the oreo effect but the phone in general was a GREAT phone so i didn't let it bother me. It still did what it needed to do and made me happy.

I have the same mentality with the EVO and im not going to let these small defects bother me. :D

This is different. The problem you refer to was a layer spacing issue and inherent to the design. The EVO issue has not been an issue on the HD2, so there is a build problem and once the screen is loose at the bottom, the following will get worse:

1. Touch response
2. Display will loosen more an likely spread slowly around the seam.
3. Dust and moisture exposure.

If you have any sign of a loose display- deny at your own peril, or return it and see if the same thing happens on a new one.

Keeping it (as is) would be foolish- IMO.

Well lets see if you feel the same way after your screen pops off. If its faulty adhesive it will eventually happen. I paid 500 for mine and I expect top notch quality.

I have to disagree. I think exchanging right now would be foolish. All of the phones that are in the inventory and systems right now, are going to be from the same manufacturing and design run. Nothing has changed with the phone you exchange it for, and i guarantee, it's going to happen to your new one. Why don't you guys just make a note of it, make a note of these threads, and then go and enjoy your phone for a little while. You have a 1 year warranty, and if you have insurance you have all the protection you need for as long as you have the phone.

But exchanging it now, isn't going to solve anything. Just my humble opinion...

What Android / Google need to release is a VERY good backup program for Android devices

So when we do exchange its painless to just swap and restore and have everything look like it was on previous phone

(Think Apple Time Machine)

No need to tweak settings, move apps around etc .. just back up and restore onto new phone

theres a few apps out there that do a little bit... but not everything as i describe (without rooting)

isn't the phone covered with a 1 year warranty that allows you a replacement for manufacturer defects? I don't understand if you don't have serious glass/leakage problems, why the frenzy to exchange for phones that will probably have the same issue. Post it on HTC's forum, call sprint to make a note to your account and wait a while to see if HTC addresses the problem, then you can request an exchange once this issue is fixed, if not, it will be a repeat process with your phones... You don't need to have Best Buy or Sprint Insurance for this, nor have to do this within your 30 days window, the phone has a warranty, so I'd wait a while unless again your issue is really bad on your phone...

Yea mine has a light leaking at the bottom and on the left side of the screen. I am probably gonna go to radioshack to see if I can exchange it. Paid good money for this so it gotta be perfect. lollz

There are foam cushions separating the LCD and the Glass. The screen is not one piece. It will move a little bit -- it's expected when you have squishy material under it!

People (including myself) dont want to ship the phone away and be phone-less for however long HTC takes to fix phones (maybe they will just ship a new one) but still .. a hassle

I got my EVO 4 days ago and have a slight light leak, and I can press the screen in and out slightly as well. I called the sprint store and they told me to bring it in so they could look at it. I took it there and they did not have any in stock, but they took my number and told me they would call me when one came in and exchange it for me.

When I got home I took a closer look at my iPhone 3GS and my iPhone 3G. I can press the screen in and out on both iPhones a little bit too, but I did not see any light leaks with the iPhone, but... It would be safe to assume that if the lit part of the screen on the iPhone was closer to the edge (as it is on the EVO), there would be light leaking on the iPhone too.

I think this getting a little blown out of proportion, and we may be making this out to be a bigger deal than it actually is. This is only my opinion, but it would seem to me that the adhesive stays flexible and you would be able to push the screen in and out slightly because of the flex in the adhesive.

I'm gonna keep an eye on this thread, as well as other internet sources to see how this issue plays out, but I have a feeling it's not going to be as big an issue as people are starting to think it is.

I am new here and this is my first post as well as my first android phone, so I hope I did not piss anyone off with this post. I am switching over to Sprint from AT&T, and have been an iPhone user for almost 2 years. I think this new EVO is a GREAT phone so far, and it may turn out to be even better than the new iPhone coming out this month. I know by my experience so far that the EVO is WAY better than the iPhone 3GS. The EVO is just what the market needs to give the iPhone a run for their money IMHO.

Flex in the adhesive? Come on do you think they are using silicone, caulk or another soft adhesive? If they are they are stupid. Thats not the issue. The issue is if the glass is popping out moisture, humidity, dust, and lint can acculmalate and damage your phone. I agree the phone is light years better then the Iphone. If it werent for my screen popping out I would be satisfied 1,000,000%.

I'm concern that if I don't exchange it the problem will get worse. I had the Pre with the oreo problem but I tough it out. Finally when the phone became unusable I took to sprint's repair shop only to be told that I was to blame. I love my Evo and If all the Evo's in stock have these issue I'll just have to live with it. :)

Here is a graphic showing what a typical capacitive touchscreen looks like. If you press on any surface near the boarders, you will see some play. It's not an indication of your screen FLYING OFF. :)

Now, if it's raising above the bezel, then it might be a problem. Also, if it is simply pressing down and coming back to flush -- if you keep fiddling with it, you just might find yourself experiencing a self-fulfilling prophecy.

Edit: note that the EVO has no bezel. It is flush with the edge of the enclosure. If it had a bezel, no-one would notice the squish, the light leak, and no screens would be coming up.

I do feel this issue is not as prevalent as people suspect. If your screen comes UP past the bezel have it checked out. Otherwise, what you're experiencing is NORMAL

Same thing happened on the HTC Touch Pro. Buttons section was lifted and people returned them in droves. Thing is, the lifted button never really affected functionality.

On the other hand, some of us had the delaminating screen. THAT did affect functionality. You'll know when you see the rainbow on the screen and you can't get the same response out of your screen taps.

If thats the case what happened to the cusion on the top? Does it have one? Could it be they used a to thick of a cusion?

Thank you for this.

I agree that we are blowing this way out of proportion.

1. Goto walmart or Home Depot and purchase a small clamp, nothing with too much pressure otherwise you'll crack your screen.

2. Use a hairdryer to heat up the lower edges where the screen meets the bezel. Make sure you get it hot, but don't go all out otherwise you'll mess up the screen and/or buttons. You want it hot enough to heat up the adhesive.

3. Once you get the area hot, lay a piece of cloth on your screen and use the clamp to apply mild pressure. (as if your were continuously pressing it with your finger)

4. Let it sit for a few hours, if not overnight.

This may help some of you guys out. Oh yeah, use at your own risk!

Day 2 and it is still holding up :) BTW, here's a few shots while I "clamped" down my wifes evo...

The glass is no longer sticking above the bezel.

It probably won't work for everyone but it's worth a try. Might buy you some time before the next batch of Evos come in.

In my case it's definitely coming above the edge/bezel and it's easy enough to test. I can rub my finger across the transition and feel it catching on the edge of the glass. The edge of the glass is rough and you can definitely feel this. When you do this on the other side, it's completely smooth. For more confirmation it's exactly where the light is leaking on the side.

Sounds like you've got an issue with yours then. For me, I've noticed that the light-leak goes away when the glass is pressed near the button row.. But I'm not going to panic until I'm experiencing what you're experiencing. For now, I'm happy with this device.. If it comes to it, I'll try Blake's fix if I need to, just to avoid the exchange process

How long did you heat it up? How hot did you get it?

Thanks Blake! Your post alone should be made a topic and stickied. That's good news. I was planning on doing the fix myself. I wonder if it would be good to do this around the whole phone to make sure it's properly sealed.

My sons screen has the separation issue... Mine does not yet... I a not happy with the build quality... The EVO rocks but the build quality is not up to par...

A couple of minutes. I heated it up quite a bit, to the point where it was too hot to touch. I used a rubber squeegee to protect the screen from the clamps and focus heat on the edges.
